If I had to pick a favourite thing from MAC it would be their eyeshadows, or more specifically their palettes. Unfortunately most of their palettes are limited edition and when they run out it becomes an issue. But now we have Eyes On MAC. These new palettes are part of the permanent line and come in colour families: Navy Times Nine, Amber Times Nine, Burgundy Times Nine, Purple Times Nine, Cool Neutral x 15 and Warm Neutral x 15.
While I’m dying to get my hands on the amber palette, we had a chance to try the Navy and it’s gorgeous. There are subtle shades for daytime and dramatic shades for night and countless combinations in between.
These palettes are so well put together and the quality is exactly what you’d expect from a MAC shadow palette. Great shades, multiple finishes (everything from matte to shimmer) and the pigmentation is fantastic. I had trouble doing swatches because a couple of the shades blended in to my skin a little too well but trust me when I say you want this palette in your life.
At one point or another we’ve all used those long wearing lipsticks with colour on one end and a clear balm on the other. But they used to be way too drying. Luckily makeup has changed and Rimmel’s Provocalips are just one of the new developments that gives us long wearing, transferproof lipstick that actually lasts and doesn’t leave our lips completely dried out. With ten shades to pick from Provocalips has you covered from subtle to dramatic.
My favourite shades are Make Your Move and Play With Fire, but I liked all four shades we were sent. You put the colour on first, let it dry for a minute and then add the top coat. And you’ll definitely need to reapply the clear top coat to keep your lips hydrated. And that is where my problem came in.
These lipsticks leak. A lot. I left them lying on my counter among other makeup on their sides and when I went back for them everything surrounding them was covered. My counter, other makeup, my hands when I tried to pick them up. Since they’re waterproof, cleanup was not easy. So while I really like these lipsticks, I’m not willing to throw them in my purse to take with me since I now keep them upright at all times. Which means I can’t reapply the top coat when I’m out, so wearing them out really isn’t an option for me.
I’d love to find a way to fix the leaking issue because I would get a ton of wear out of these if I could take them with me.
Sometimes I don’t know what companies are thinking when they release seasonal collections because they don’t make sense at all. Laura Mercier’s Watercolour Clouds Spring ’15 collection isn’t one of those times. Everything about Watercolour Clouds makes perfect sense. The shades are soft, dreamy and most definitely for spring. Watercolour Mist Eye And Cheek Palette
If you want bold colour and high pigmentation, skip this palette. But if you want a soft wash of colour, this is perfect. With six eyeshadows and two cheek colours, there are multiple looks in this palette.
The cheek shades are actually the best contour shades I’ve found for my fair skin. I use Sunset for blush and Earth for contour and it looks completely natural. Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Brigitte
This lipstick is so creamy and hydrating. Brigitte is a soft pink that’s just a little too close to my actual lip shade to really show up on me but the lipstick is so comfortable I’ll definitely be looking into other shades. Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in Nude Rose
I love all these liquid lipsticks and I’m completely obsessed with Nude Rose. It’s subtle, matte and lasts for hours. I’ve been wearing this more than any other lip anything I have.
We’re huge fans of Tarte so it wasn’t a huge surprise that we completely fell in love with their spring releases and we had to do a Most Wanted on it because these shades are just so perfect for spring. Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette
Tartelette is a brand new eyeshadow palette that has twelve brand new matte neutral shades. Every single shadow is extremely pigmented and really smooth and blendable. Even without a primer these shadows last a lot longer than you’d expect. I love that Tarte included instructions for two looks using the palette. LipSurgence Lip Tint in Glitzy
I’d never used a LipSurgence Lip Tint before and after using Glitzy I’m completely hooked. This deep pink shade is so flattering and it’s probably the most moisturizing lip crayon I’ve ever used and I love that even after it wears off you still have a tint of colour. Tartelette Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Celebrated
Tarte’s blushes are known for their pigmentation and lasting power and Celebration is no exception. This blush was released as part of Tarte’s 15th anniversary and the light pink nude was a little lighter than I expected but built up really well. Tartelette Amazonian Butter Lipstick
This mid-toned pink lipstick is another anniversary release but this one is limited edition. I really can’t imagine a better spring lipstick than Ethereal Pink. It’s soft, creamy and lasts forever. The fact that it’s both super pigmented and really comfortable at the same time had me sold the first time I wore it.
I can’t count how many MAC holiday sets I’ve bought over the years. My first good set of brushes came from one of those sets and this years Keepsake kits are just as amazing as ever. I’ve never really paid much attention to the individual products you can get though and this year that changes. The Heirloom Mix Colour Collection has everything you want in a makeup collection; shadows, lip products, liners, nail polishes, etc… All in gorgeous, pigmented shades. Heirloom Mix Pressed Pigment l-r Noblesse Oblige, Modern Majesty, Enchantment
Until you see these in person you can’t really get a good grasp of how insanely gorgeous these shadows are. They’re super shimmery, really buildable and just perfect for the holiday season. Modern Majesty is a personal favourite with it’s green pearl in a dark brown base. Heirloom Mix Glitter in Amethyst
MAC’s glitters are everything you want in a sparkle for the holiday. Amethyst is a really pretty purple that, well, glitters. It’s really loose and you can apply it anywhere you want to sparkle or add it on top of your shadow for extra shine. It works particularly well with the Enchantment Pressed Pigment. Heirloom Cremesheen Glass in Courting Chic I’ve never tried Cremesheen Glass before so I was expecting the stickiness of Lipglass. I was so far off base and this might be my new favourite gloss. It’s creamy, non-sticky and you still get that glassy shine that you want. Courting Chic might be the most flattering red gloss I’ve ever tried. It’s more like a sheer red gloss tint with gold shimmer. The second I opened the box, I was blown away by the shade. Putting it on made it even better.
If these are any indication of what I’ve been missing each year by focusing on MAC’s kits, I guess I need to start taking a better look because these are some of my favourite holiday shades all season.
The only experience I’ve had with Guerlain’s makeup is when I reviewed the Kiss Kiss lipstick. I love that lipstick so when I saw the A Night At The Opera Holiday collection, I knew I had to try a few things. Ecrin 2 Couleurs in Cygne Noir
This eyeshadow duo is perfect for a holiday night out. With a shimmering silver black and a deep plum, it’s super dramatic and really pigmented. Petrouchka Palette For Eyes And Cheeks
This palette has everything you need for your eyes and cheeks. Literally. It comes with a mini set of eye and cheek applicators, 5 shimmery sheer neutral eyeshadows and 4 blushes. All wrapped in a bow. The shadows and blushes definitely play well together and are really easy to apply and build up. La Petite Robe Noire
La Petite Robe Noire isn’t technically part of the holiday collection but this limited edition bottle looks like an ornament so I’m including it. With notes of rose, jasmine and orange blossom, this scent is subtle. It has a powdery feel to me but not in an old lady way. It’s classy and elegant and will make your fragrance match your makeup.
There are so many things I love about NUDESTIX. I love the idea that almost everything comes in crayon form so that you don’t have to worry about brushes and you can throw them in your purse. I love that there’s a lot of neutral options and I love that it’s a Canadian family business (mom and two daughters). But my favourite thing might be the fact that their Magnetic eye colour crayons are made with oily lids in mind. If you’re not going to carry brushes around, chances are you aren’t carrying primer either, which could make creamy eyeshadow a nightmare.
The #GILTYLOVE Holiday Kit has three of the Magnetic eye colours along with a sharpener that comes in a gorgeous limited edition tin designed by Jessica Gorlicky that has a huge mirror inside. Apparently limited edition cases are going to be a thing with NUDESTIX and I can’t wait to see what the next one looks like.
The shades inside #GILTYLOVE are Gilt (gold), Twilight (dark bronze) and Night (black). These are the perfect colours for a night out or a holiday party and you’ve got everything covered from shadow to eyeliner. They’re super creamy, blendable and extremely easy to use. And in the case of the oily eyelid (or sweaty ones), they stick.
There are so many other NUDESTIX products on my to try list but #GILTYLOVE is a great place to start and if you’re gifting, it’s a great way to introduce others to the brand.
L’Oreal has been putting out collections from their spokespeople for a while now and I love the idea of them because you can pretty much always find something for your skintone. The latest collection is the Pure Reds and it’s pretty much exactly what I was hoping for, there’s a shade of red for literally anyone. With six lipsticks and their corresponding nail polishes (we got five of them), they’ve got everyone covered. Doutzen’s Pure Red
Doutzen’s Pure Red is more of a Tangerine red but it’s actually pretty flattering on me. The nail polish is super sheer, three coats didn’t even begin to cover my nail line so if that’s something that bothers you just skip the polish and go for the lipstick. JLo’s Pure Red
I’m pretty sure JLo’s Pure Reds are going to end up being my favourites. The classic ruby red has a slight blue tinge that I love and they’re so matchy matchy that I kind of love it. Eva’s Pure Red
Eva’s should really be the one I’m drawn to the most but I was clearly having a bad nail polish day because I was just having issues left and right and it had nothing to do with the actual polish. If you like a darker classic red shade, this is the one for you. Blake’s Pure Red
Blake’s Pure Red set made absolutely no sense to me. The lipstick shade is a pure classic cherry red and the polish is more of a vampy purple red. I love both of them so I guess they don’t have to match. Laetitia’s Pure Red
I adore Laetitia’s Pure Red. It’s a dark, blood red that’s a little vampy and gothy. You could probably call it oxblood. It’s just so pretty.
I honestly can’t remember if I’ve ever used L’Oreal nail polishes before, I don’t own any so if I have, it wasn’t recently. That’s going to change after using these polishes. With the exception of my Eva bad nail day these polishes were a dream to work with and even though Doutzen’s was really sheer, they’re all really pigmented. They’ve really covered all the bases with these reds so that there’s something for everyone. The hardest part is picking a favourite.
Every company has black eyeliner in one form or another but Lord And Berry have taken their black eyeliner options to a whole other level. Their Black Wardrobe collection has everything you could ever possibly need to get the look you want, from subtle daytime to completely dramatic. These are our Most Wanted eyeliners from the collection. Kajal Stick in Oriental Black
This traditional Kajal stick is super creamy and blendable and works amazingly well on waterlines. It’s rich black pigment is about as black as you can get. It’s perfect for a nighttime look.
Silk Kajal Kohl Eyeliner in Black
This is a great, everyday black eyeliner. It’s buildable so that you can go for a more subtle look or get a darker, more intense black. It’s not the darkest of the blacks but it’s close. Pailettes Eye Pencil in Sparkle Black
If you want something a little different for holiday parties but do want to go to extreme, this is the eyeliner for you. It’s a black pencil with sparkle in it, but it’s not overpowering. You can blend it out for a black shimmer shadow as well.
Smudgeproof Eye Pencil in In The Black
This is my personal favourite of the liners. I hate runny black eyeliner so I’m always looking for something that won’t budge and this pencil doesn’t move at all. It’s great for tightlining because it’s just the right texture.
Lord And Berry literally have a black eyeliner for every occasion and need, so if you love wearing black as much as I do this is definitely the company to look for.
I started using Clinique’s Black Honey Almost Lipstick while I was in high school in the ’90’s but I haven’t been using it much the past few years. Now that all things 90’s are coming back Clinique released a Sephora exclusive Black Honey Wardrobe, a Black Honey Affair All About Shadow Palette to go along with it’s cult fave Almost Lipstick.
The shades are exactly what you’d expect to go with the Black Honey Almost Lipstick. The left four shades are warm neutrals (including a shade called Black Honey) and the right four are on the purple end of the spectrum. It also includes a dual ended brush.
I’ve been using the left side almost exclusively for daytime and the right side for night. But all the shades work really well together and blend seamlessly. The actual Almost Lipstick is just as great as I remember. A sheer wash of colour that’s totally buildable, I really wonder why I stopped using it.
I wish the shadow palette wasn’t limited edition because I’m going to want another one when I empty the one I have but at least I’ve redisovered my love for the Black Honey Almost Lipstick. And since they sell one every three minutes, I’m guessing it won’t be a problem to replace it when I run out.
