Summer Frizzy Hair Most Wanted

Toronto’s humidity really isn’t conducive to good summer hair. The amount of frizz we’ve come up with has been pretty scary, so these are our Most Wanted summer products for combating the evil frizz.

Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Moisture Renewal Deep Conditioner
Pantene 3 Minute Miracle
When the summer leaves my hair extra dry and frizzy, I have been replacing my regular conditioner with this special deep conditioner. I like that I can just swap this into my regular routine without having to make any big changes. You can use it daily or weekly depending on what your hair needs. My hair’s pretty thick, so I used it at least once a week, but I can see how it could weigh down lighter hair. My hair looked great while using it, so I am keeping it close at hand for emergencies.

Kérastase Laque Couture Hairspray
LACQUE-COUTURE-1000X1000
This hairspray is great for people who aren’t sure what they really need for their hair. The spray is a very fine mist that is easy to start light and layer it on in stages. I found that it dried in my hair extremely quickly, so I wasn’t just spraying blindly. It’s easy to spray and then instantly know if you need a little more. The first time I used this I misjudged the power and sprayed a bit too many layers. Trust Kerastase and know that it has got you covered.

Kérastase Keratine Thermique Smoothing Taming Milk
keratine-thermique-main-1000x1000
This summer has been rough on my hair. It has been frizzier than usual from day one. There was no question that I was in need of this! This Kerastase Milk is easy to. All that you have to do is apply it to your towel dried hair. It says to apply extra on really dry parts, which for me was pretty much my entire head. Then you have to blow dry it. I opted to straighten it as well to ensure my waves we sleek. My hair looked awesome and stayed manageable for almost an entire week. At about the 5 day mark I hit it with some dry shampoo and knew the magic was over. Five days of easy to control hair is better than none!

Sebastian Dry Clean Only Instant Refreshing Spray
sebastian dry clean only
This dry shampoo from Sebastian is for serious emergencies only! It’s for days when your hair needs a real pick-me-up. It does have a very light, almost white colouring, so be ready to brush it through well. I love how well it absorbs all of the oil in my hair, but it is strong, so save it for the worst days.

Fave 4 Up For Air
Fave 4 Up For Air
I air dry my hair 99% of the time and I haven’t had a ton of luck with air dry creams in the past. So when we received a travel sized version of Fave 4’s Up For Air air dry cream, I didn’t have high expectations. Boy was I wrong. This stuff is amazing! You only need a tiny bit to run through your hair and just let it work while your hair dries. My hair hasn’t been crunchy or sticky since I started using it and it has a really nice tropical smell. My frizz has cut down significantly and I’m already on the hunt for a full size version.

Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor Quickie Review

schick-intuition-naturals-sensitive-care-razorIf you’re like me and have really sensitive skin, you’re basically stuck with shaving your legs all the time. Waxing is out so I’m always trying different razors to see what works best. Schick’s Intuition razors aren’t new to me but the Sensitive Care was. It has a really nice, light scent and the built in solid is a really convenient way to shave without dealing with a cream as well or a moisturizer afterwards. It’s also great for travelling. My only issue is that the shave bar disappears really quickly and it’s hard to properly clean out the blades because the bar is in the way. This means you have to get refills more often than you would a traditional razor. If you need something to take with you on a trip or camping, this is definitely a great idea. Even if you’re just touching up stubble. But this is not the razor for a big after winter shave. If you need something that won’t irritate sensitive skin though, this is definitely a way to get super smooth skin.

OPI Washington DC Fall/Winter 2016 Collection

Fall is my happy place as far as nail polish goes and I’m so happy that we receive fall collections when it’s still summer. First up is OPI’s Washington DC fall/winter collection. There are twelve shades in this collection plus three more ‘limited edition’ Kerry Washington shades. The Scandal star is OPI’s creative ambassador this year and her shades are pretty great. We have a lot of colours to get through, so let’s get started.
Pale To The Chief
OPI Pale To The Chief Swatch
So nearly nude, it’s almost scandalous.
I’m not a huge fan of nude polish but I actually like this one quite a bit. The formula is a little tricky though, I did two coats but I waited a good couple minutes between each one. If you don’t, you risk squishiness and patchiness and settling issues. Be patient with this one and it’ll pay off.
Never A Dulles Moment
OPI Never A Dulles Moment
A curry yellow seen on airport and fashion week runways.
I’m not a fan of yellow in pretty much anything so yellow polish isn’t my thing. As far as tricky yellow formulas go, this one wasn’t too bad. It was actually pretty similar to Pale To The Chief. This was two coats with a little patchiness and slight settling issues. I felt like I had painted my nails with mustard but the few people who saw me wearing it, loved it on me.
Yank My Doodle
OPI Yank My Doodle Swatch
Get a tawny copper mani and call it macaroni
This terracotta shade was relatively easy to work with, the first shade went on very sheer but the second made it perfect. This one is just ok for me. I don’t hate it but I probably won’t wear it again either.
Freedom Of Peach
OPI Freedom Of Peach Swatch
Wearing this creamy peach is your fashion right
This dusty peach was a one-coater! I had zero issues with it and I actually ended up loving it when I was expecting to hate it. I might be completely over orange nail polish but this one just felt a bit different.
Squeaker Of The House
OPI Squeaker Of The House Swatch
A chocolate brown so yummy, it crosses party lines
Squeaker Of The House went on perfectly in two coats and looks like milk chocolate. It’s pretty much everything I want in a brown polish.
Shh…It’s Top Secret
OPI Shh...It's Top Secret! Swatch
A deep, deep brown so dark, it’s incognito
OPI is calling this one brown, so there must be some in there but all I see is black. And I’m ok with that. I coat of this one was good, two was better and a top coat makes it stunning. I love Lincoln Park After Dark for an almost black and this one might be even better.
Madam President
OPI Madam President Swatch
A commanding red with real Oval Office power
1 coat of this pink learning red was great but two is gorgeous. It’s such a great transitional shade between summer and fall and I wore this one for a week without much tip wear. It does stain though. Badly.
OPI By Popular Vote
OPI OPI By Popular Vote Swatch
It’s a landslide victory! This cool apple red is a real winner.
Does this look a little similar to Madam President? Yes, yes it does. This one was a one-coater though and a touch more of a traditional red.
We The Female
OPI We The Female Swatch
You’re hereby authorized to wear this empowering garnet
Two coats of this oxblood red is just perfect. I love this shade for fall.
CIA = Color Is Awesome
OPI CIA = Color Is Awesome Swatch
A smart, dusky blue for secret agent fashionistas
I was expecting to love this deep teal blue but I really didn’t think I would love it this much. It doesn’t hurt that the formula was flawless and this is a one-coater. Staining was minimal. This is one of my favourites from the collection, if not my actual favourite.
Stay Off The Lawn!!
OPI Stay Off The Lawn!! Swatch
Don’t trespass on this deep, lush green
Clearly blue and green polishes are my favourites because there’s going to be a lot of gushing going on between this one and CIA = Color is Awesome. Like CIA, this one was a perfect one-coater only in forest green this time. It’s just perfect.
Suzi – The First Lady Of Nails
OPI Suzi - The First Lady Of Nails Swatch
Command the political scene in this chic olive green.
This olive green was unexpected for me until I realized it could also be considered military green, in which case it makes perfect sense. The first coat of this one was very sheer but two was perfect. I really like this shade and don’t have a lot like it in my collection.

Kerry Washington Shades

Inside The ISABALLETway
OPI Isaballetway Swatch
Washington’s movers-andshakers vie for this caramel crème
Named for Kerry Washington’s daughter, this light brown had a great formula. Two coats were perfect but you can get away with one if you really have to.
Kerry Blossom
OPI Kerry Blossom Swatch
Accomplished stateswomen love this plum with capital flair
This plum shade is so, so pretty. Unfortunately, it’s also patchy. Two coats mostly evened it out and if I was patient enough I might’ve done a third to even it out even more. But I love this shade enough that I didn’t need it completely perfect.
“Liv” In The Gray
OPI Liv In The Gray Swatch
This edgy, sophisticated dark gray makes a strong federal case.
This one-coater gray is another one of my favourites. It’s so gorgeous and a nice little change from black and brown.

Obviously I’m not going to like every shade in a collection this big but this is hands down my favourite OPI collection in a very long time.

Redken Frizz Dismiss Collection

redken-frizz-dismissMost of us have at least a little bit of frizz to our hair and some of us have it way worse than others. But finding the right product that actually makes a difference is easier said than done. Redken have decided to make it a little easier with their Frizz Dismiss line. The first thing you have to do is find your Frizz Protection Factor, or FPF. The range goes from 10-40 and my hair is really frizzy but also really fine. According to the chart, I shouldn’t go over FPF 20. I love the idea of this because we all have different hair needs and when I ventured into the products that were FPF 30+, I definitely noticed they were too heavy for my hair.

My regular routine with the Frizz Dismiss line is the sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner (these are also sodium chloride-free) followed by the Smooth Force spray. The shampoo and conditioner have a relatively mild scent and the shampoo lathered up really nicely. The conditioner looks thin coming out of the bottle but once you use it, it’s much thicker than I expected. Before I got highlights, I had a good amount of moisturization going on from these products. And after, well…they didn’t hold up to the bleach. If you have severely dry hair, you’re probably going to want to use the hair mask as well.

My favourite product is the Smooth Force. I use it as a leave-in conditioner/styling product and let my hair air dry. I have to say, it does a really good job preventing frizz from forming while my hair is drying and an ok job once the frizz is already there.

Considering how humid Toronto has been this summer, it would take a miracle to completely get rid of all my frizz but Frizz Dismiss gives it a good effort.

Summer Suncare Most Wanted – Alyssa’s Picks

Steph posted her Most Wanted suncare products yesterday and while I’ve used quite a few of the same products, I wasn’t surprised that my list was completely different. I have much paler skin than she does and I burn easier than anyone else I know; so to say I have an obsession with suncare products is a little bit of an understatement. We might be heading closer to the end of August, but summer in Toronto doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and I’ve been using these sunscreens for months, so I know how well they work. Two of these are physical sunscreens and two are chemical and I honestly don’t think I have a preference between the two kinds as long as they work.
Avène High Protection Spray SPF 50+
Avene High Protection Spray SPF 50+
This lotion spray falls into the physical sunscreen category and unlike another product I’ve tried from the brand, it’s much easier to work with. It’s a lotion spray, so rubbing it in is essential (but you should really rub in all sprays). It does leave a faint white cast to my skin but it fades after a little while. I like this one best when I don’t have a ton of skin showing because it’s easier to work with.

Shiseido Wet Force Ultra Sun Protection Lotion For Sensitive Skin + Children SPF 50+
Shiseido Wet Force 50+
This is the other physical sunscreen on my list and it might be my favourite physical sunscreen ever. It becomes more effective once your skin is wet and my head sweats a lot in the summer. I haven’t gotten a hint of pink on my skin while using this and that’s saying something. It does turn my skin white but I found a way to make it less noticeable. I apply it and rub it in a little, then wait a few minutes and rub the rest in. It takes longer to get ready but it’s worth the effort.

Coppertone Clearly Sheer Face SPF 30
Coppertone Clearly Sheer Face
Coppertone as a whole has been the biggest surprise for me this year. The matching body sunscreen is hands down my favourite sunscreen lotion this year but the face version really stood out to me. It comes in a pump format and absorbs so quickly that you can apply the proper amount without feeling like you’re piling it on (and I use A LOT). This doesn’t leave my face greasy and the scent is so faint that people who have issues with the smell of sunscreen should be good with this one. I love this whole line way more than I expected to.

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless Lotion SPF 30
Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless SPF 30
This lotion is part sunscreen, part moisturizer. Or at least that’s what it feels like. It absorbs fairly quickly and smells delicious but the best part is how it makes your skin feel. If someone told me I could have a sunscreen that actually worked and made my skin feel super soft, I wouldn’t have believed them. Now I have proof.

Summer Sunscreen Most Wanted – Steph’s Picks

Biotherm Body Milk Sun Protection
BIO1001_LAIT_SOLAIRE_SPF15_200_large
Moisturizer meet sunscreen. With an SPF rating of just 15, this isn’t the kind of sun protection that you are going to wear on a trip out to the beach. For those days, we have stocked up on lots of serious sun protection. This is the super moisturizing body product that also happens to protect your skin while you’re out. I love it for work days when I will probably be indoors most of the time, but still want protection. It will also be great for the winter when you sometimes forget to wear sunscreen. It does have a tangy lemon scent that smells a bit like cleaning products, so be sure to have perfume ready if you aren’t crazy about lemons.

Clarins Sun Care Milk-Lotion Spray
Clarins Sunscreen Care Milk-Lotion Spray
I’ve had some bad luck with spray sun screen this summer. None of them have the right spray with the right power. Clarins is getting closer to perfection with their milk-lotion. The spray is a bit weird. It doesn’t spray evenly, so you have to spread it around. The SPF is also just 20, so it’s not strong enough for many people I know. That said, everytime I wore it my skin was totally protected. I didn’t burn anywhere and started to feel really confident in this sunscreen. It goes to show sometimes you have to give things a chance.

Garnier Ombrelle Sport Endurance Sunscreen
Ombrelle Endurance Sport Sunscreen
It’s been so hot this summer that you need a sunscreen that is going to last through everything. Garnier’s new sunscreen is not just water resistant, but also sweat resistant. I love how quickly it absorbs into my skin and it doesn’t leave any weird residue. My skin still feels like my skin.

Banana Boat Sun Comfort Sunscreen Lotion
Banana Boat Sun Comfort Lotion
Somehow I’ve made it this long without ever using Banana Boat sunscreen lotion. It might be one of my new faves now. I love the faint smell. I love how it makes my skin feel moisturized. I love how strong it is to protect me from the sun. I’m not sure how I feel about the claim that sand will brush off easily. While I’ve only used it at the pool, I doubt that this is true. Regardless it’s still my new favourite sunscreen.

L’Occitane Verveine Moisturizing Body Mousse + Fresh Body Mist

L'Occitane Verveine Moisturizing Body Mousse and Fresh Body Mist
If there’s one L’Occitane line I love the most, it’s the Verveine collection. I’ve always loved the scent of verbena and they just keep adding new products to the line. Like last summer’s additions, this year’s are equally refreshing in the crazy Toronto heat wave. We tried two of the products; the Moisturizing Body Mousse and the Fresh Body Mist.

The Moisturizing Body Mousse is extremely hydrating and cooling (and really fun to use!) but you’re definitely going to want to avoid touching your face for a while or wash your hands really well right after you apply it because it can make your eyes sting. That’s really the only downside though. Right after you put it on, your skin feels soft for hours and there’s no stickiness and it dries instantly.

The Fresh Body Mist is equally refreshing and an really light, fresh scent. Unfortunately, the scent doesn’t seem to last very long on me. It almost disappears as quickly as I spray it, but I do enjoy how refreshing the scent is when I use it. The bottle is small enough that you can throw it in your purse and use it as often as you want.

If you’re looking for ways to get refreshed, this line is a good place to start.

Mistura Beauty Solutions

Mistura Beauty Solutions

This month I’ve been trying out a few products from Ottawa-based makeup brand, Mistura Beauty Solutions. The really seem to be all about simplifying your beauty routine with their products. I think that’s an interesting idea, outside of just making women look great.

I started at the very top with their Ultimate 6-in1 Beauty Solutions box set. This kit includes a Vitamin E Lip Treatment, Retractable Beauty Brush, Luminada Illuminating Moisturizer and their trademark statement product the 6-in-1 Beauty Solution. I also tried their C-2-P Complexion Corrector and the Vivid Lash HD Mascara, but it’s the solution powder that I want to talk about now.

This powder is their big product. They were even on Dragon’s Den with it! This powder comes in one shade to help cover redness and perfect your skin, no matter what your tone is. Honestly, I am not going to lie to you… I didn’t see the difference. I tried using it with the moisturizer and brush that was included, but I really didn’t see any difference after applying it. I read the instructions. I tried my own brushes. I applied it over the Complexion Corrector. I actually tried using this powder almost every day for two weeks without seeing the results.

I wanted this to be my new secret weapon. I wanted this to be my own solution, but nothing.

I would love for Mistura to prove me wrong. I want to really get this product. I hope that they find this review. This almost bronze powder hasn’t made an impact on my skin… what am I doing wrong?

Covergirl Makeup Most Wanted

Sometimes it’s easy to forget about where your love for makeup started. I got back in touch with my roots with some new Covergirl products.

covergirl trublend face primer dry skin

First I tried the Covergirl Tru Blend Face Primer for Dry Skin. My initial reaction was to the smell. This primer smells bad. I’m not sure what the scent is, but it’s not really something that I want all over my face all day. It might sound weird, but I think it kind of smells like tobacco. It is a good primer, but it’s a bit too moisturizing for my skin. I prefer primers that are more mattifying. I might give this product another chance and go for the oily skin primer to see if the feel, and smell, is any different.

covergirl the super sizer mascara

To follow this up, I got two new Covergirl products from BzzAgent. I tried Covergirl’s The Super Sizer Fibers Mascara. I have to admit that I don’t understand the brush for this mascara. The bristles are so small that they barely exist. My long lashes want a long mascara brush to get in between and keep the separate. My lashes look fine after applying, but they aren’t super long. They tend to get clumped up easier.

covergirl clean matte bb cream

On the other hand, the Covergirl Clean Matte BB Cream is amazing! I don’t know what took Covergirl so long to jump on the bb cream trend. I assume it’s that they were perfecting this product. Like I said before, I prefer mattifying face products. This bb cream gives my face good coverage without feeling heavy. I’ve been avoiding a lot of heavy moisturizers and foundations this hot summer, but Covergirl’s bb cream is great for even hot days.

Lise Watier Neiges Eau Frâiche

Lise Watier Neiges Eau Fraiche BoxFinding a good summer scent can be hard. You want to smell good but don’t want something overpowering. A lot of companies release alcohol free versions of popular scents for summer and we have one of those. Lise Watier’s Neiges is a pretty iconic Canadian perfume and their summer version Neiges Eau Frâiche is lovely as well.
Lise Watier Neiges Eau Fraiche
This alcohol free version can be used on both your hair and body and has a really light, slightly powdery scent. It has top notes of hyacinth, lily of the valley, rose and jasmine; middle notes of magnolia and orange blossom and bottom notes of sandalwood and musk. Leaving you with a really soft floral scent with a hint of something mysterious.

I haven’t used a lot of Lise Watier’s fragrances in the past but I’m really enjoying Neige Eau Frâiche quite a bit. I’m looking forward to trying other scents from the brand.
