Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Summer Most Wanted

Youngblood All
As summer gets warmer I find myself using way less makeup than I normally do and I’ve been noticing that the products I’m reaching for the most are from Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. This company was new to me when I received these products and now it’s one of my favourites (I have a wishlist of what I want to try next). We’ve already put Youngblood in our Bronzers Most Wanted post. With the addition of mascara, these three cosmetics can get me out of the house looking made up without me worrying about my makeup melting all over the place.
Eye-Mazing Liquid Liner Pen

Youngblood Eye-Mazing Liquid Liner Pen Swatches
Noir, Azul, Verge, Marron, Gris

I’ve never been good at any kind of liquid liner or eyeliner pen until I tried these. They’re so easy to use and get a perfect line, even if you think you won’t be able to do it. I use these with a primer but even without them, they last a really long time and don’t smudge. I don’t think I’ve used a pencil liner more then twice since I started using these. Just make sure you close the cap tightly, when I went to take the swatches I noticed that Gris wasn’t closed properly and was almost dried out. These are also vegan and paraben free.
Anti-Shine Mattifier
Youngblood Anti-Shine Mattifier
Unlike a lot of mattifiers I’ve tried that come in liquid primer form, this one comes semi-solid and with a sponge. And it really really works without leaving your skin feeling tight or dried out. It’s almost clear and feels silky, almost like a balm. Considering how shiny I get in the summer, I’ve been getting a ton of use out of this.
Hydrating Lip Tint SPF 15
Youngblood Hydrating Lip Tint SPF 15
If there’s one thing I hate about throwing tinted lip balms in my purse, it’s looking for the caps when they fall off. The packaging for these lip tints are genius. They’re spring loaded so once you snap them closed, they stay closed. The shades are sheer and feel like you’re not wearing anything but they’re also super flattering and hydrating.

Sunscreen Most Wanted

Sunscreen Most Wanted
I have very fair skin and over the years summer has become a game of what sunscreen will keep me from turning lobster red and what does absolutely nothing. At this point I’m absolutely fine with being pale all year round so I’ve put together a list of sunscreens that actually work.
Arbonne Water-Resistant Sunscreen SPF 30
Arbonne Water Resistant Sunscreen SPF 30
This is more of a traditional sunscreen lotion. It absorbs really well and has a slight orange scent. It doesn’t leave a greasy feel but like most lotions can get a little difficult to reapply on wet skin.
Neutrogena Beach Defense Kids SPF 60
Neutrogena Beach Defense Kids SPF 60
Another lotion, I find that kid’s formulas sometimes work better on my super fair, sensitive skin and this is one of those times. This one definitely works, but it takes a little effort to rub it in.
Ombrelle Dry Mist SPF 60
Ombrelle Dry Mist SPF 60
Spray sunscreens have come a long way in that now they actually work. This Ombrelle sunscreen is what I use on a daily basis when I’m running into the car or heading out for an hour. It sprays on almost invisibly and it really does feel dry. The lack of greasiness or moisture sometimes causes me to question how much actually went on.
L’Oreal Sublime Sun Quick Dry SPF 30
L'Oreal Sublime Sun Quick Dry SPF 30 Sheer Finish Spray
This spray isn’t quite as dry as the Ombrelle one but it’s alcohol free which means it won’t dry out my skin as easily, it smells delicious and it works really well.
Coppertone Kids Mousse SPF 60
Coppertone Kids Sunscreen Mousse SPF 60
I’ve never seem a mousse sunscreen before and I had to try it. It’s the same as using mousse for your hair only it feels much drier. It absorbs so quickly, the first couple times I used it I went over the same areas a few times because I thought I had missed spots. This one takes a little more work in application but it won’t leave you greasy.

I love the way that sunscreen is changing into working better and not leaving you looking like an oil slick. Did I miss a sunscreen you love? Let us know!

Bio Seaweed Gel Nail Polish Review

Healthy and Canadian, Bio Seaweed Gel Nail Polish seems to have everything going for it, so when I saw all of the beautiful colours I knew I had to try it. Bio Seaweed Gel is free of the five harsh chemicals that plague many nail polishes. It also has tons of colours available, enough to rival any other collection. I had two very different experiences with the polish though. The first time I tried Bio Seaweed Gel, I had a professional manicure done. It applies like Shellac polish. The manicurist applied the base, polish and top coat in stages and dried it under the UV lights between each layer. My manicurist had no problem applying it and it was dry the second she was finished. I was so impressed by the finished look. The Bio Seaweed Gel polish had an amazing glossy shine. For two weeks, it kept up its pristine glossy shine on my nails with no chips. Unlike other gel polishes, I didn’t have to go back to the salon to get it removed. It came off fairly easily with regular nail polish remover. bio seaweed gel nail polish When I found out you could also get Bio Seaweed Gel polish at home, I was excited. I got the polishes delivered and dreamed of that first perfect manicure. This time things weren’t so perfect. I didn’t get the base coat or top coat, because the Unity polish says it’s an all-in-one. That was my first mistake. Also while it says it can dry under either a UV light, LED light or sunlight. Fortunately, I have a light at home, but I doubt most people do, so you will have a harder time getting a quick dry. I applied the polish and dried it under my UV light, but it wasn’t the same. It had a high shine, but it didn’t look pristine like my first manicure. Also it chipped off within just a few days. Now I am torn over how to review Bio Seaweed Gel polish. I adored my first manicure. But my second at home manicure was an absolute failure. For now, I am going to blame it on me. If you are looking for a quality gel polish that isn’t Shellac, find a salon that uses this safer polish and give it a try!

Bronzers Most Wanted

We all know that sunbathing and tanning is a big no, but that doesn’t stop me from loving the look of a perfect tan. I love it when my cheeks are all bronzed, but it’s tricky to get it to look natural sans sun. Here are my favourite bronzers that give you a glow from day to night:

MAC Cosmetics Bronzing Powder – MAC’s bronzer has been my tried and true bronzer for years. This is the bronzer for you if you are nervous about turning orange. The golden shade is very light and natural looking. I never have to worry about looking fake or blochy. It helps me looking healthy and fresh all year round.

Pupa 4Sun Bronzing Powder – This compact is split in four bronzing shades that mimic your tan. You need to apply this bronzer carefully because the four shades get gradually darker. Use the shades closest to your natural hue and move up from there to avoid dark streaks. It’s great though because it can work with your skin tone year round to get a natural looking tan.

Lancome Star Bronzer Powder – Lancome’s new summer 2014 bronzer is absolutely stunning. The flecks of gold make it shimmer in the oversized package. The gold powder might be too much for day time, but the golden glow is perfect for hot summer nights. Apply with caution because this powder packs serious sparkle.

Youngblood Mineral Radiance – If you want to fake a real tan, this is the bronzer for you. The Sunshine powder gives you a natural tanned look that you can add on your face or even your body. It has even coverage and everyone is going to think that you spend a day out on the beach when you were really trapped in the office.

Murale Summer-Fall Preview

Juice Beauty Eye Lift
Juice Beauty Eye Lift

Murale is the beauty only version of Shopper’s Drug Mart and is the Canadian exclusive store to a lot of brands. If you can’t get to a Murale location, you can shop online at

Rococo Mani Smitten
Rococo Mani in ‘Smitten’

I recently had a chance to go to the Toronto location for a preview of what’s coming up for the rest of the summer and a little of the new stuff for fall. Different brands were set up around the store and my first stop was a Rococo Nail Apparel manicure. There were so many shades to choose from but I ended up choosing ‘Smitten,’ a gorgeous Tiffany blue. Rococo will be available at Murale in August.

Monteil Collection
My next stop was the Monteil station. Monteil has been around since the 1930’s and is based in Germany, only a couple of their products are available in Canada right now, including the Elixir Metamorphose Instant Facelife Serum. A lot more of the line is coming in September, including eye and lip treatments and a 4-way Hyaluronic Serum.
Foreo Cleansers
The Foreo Luna Mini Cleansing Device is different than any others I’ve seen. Its made completely of silicone so bacteria can’t get trapped. It comes in really cute colours and one charge can last for 300 uses. I can’t wait to try it out.
Tata Harper Love Potion
Tata Harper is Vermont based company whose products are 100% natural. This picture only shows a tiny bit of the line and I can’t wait to try the products.
3 Lab Super Cream
3Lab’s Super Cream is definitely what I would call a high end product. At $875 it claims to do everything from brightening to reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Since the closest I’m getting to one of these is when I got to try a tiny bit on my hand I can’t really say if it works. But if you can afford to get one, let us know what you think.

I saw a lot more brands but either couldn’t fit them all in or just can’t show you yet but I was definitely excited to see what’s coming in the fall and can’t wait to find out what’s after that.

Yves Rocher Sebo Vegetal Collection

Yves Rocher has added a skin care line for summer that takes care of the woes of oily skin. If you have oily skin, you know that summer is the worst! All of the heat and humidity mean that you are more prone to oil and breakouts, but the Yves Rocher Sebo Vegetal collection helps to mattify.

The line uses a new Baikal powder from the Scutellaria Root and you can tell it’s a plant based, organic line by the smell. The smell leaves something to be desired, but fortunately it works so it’s worth the smell.

For the complete spa treatment, start with the Purifying Cleansing Gel. It’s a light face wash that is great for summer, because it doesn’t leave any of that weird residue on your face.

Follow that up with the Purifying Micellar Water 2-In-1 Toner. To be honest, I don’t usually use toner, but this one makes my skin feel matte and dry after use. When I use to all over my clean face, my face feels super clean and fresh. My face is actually ready for moisturizer, whereas sometimes I don’t want to pile on more product on oily face.

I have been finishing my daily routine with the Zero Blemish Gel Cream. I usually hate gel cream, but this one is totally different. It’s more like a regular moisturizer, but it absorbs the oil and leaves your skin dry, but moisturized. Since I started using this cream, I have visibly noticed that my once troublesome areas are clearing up and my skin looks less oily throughout the day. The line also includes a Mattifying Cream Gel, but this one is more like the regular gels and I don’t like the texture, so I am sticking with the other one.

If you are sick of summer breakouts, try Yves Rocher’s line. It’s line your other acne collections all grown up and ready for your skin.

Jodi Lyn O’Keefe Makeup Interview

Whether you know Jodi Lyn O’Keefe from Two And A Half Men, Prison Break or her new VH1 series Hit The Floor, there is no denying her beauty. From her captivating gaze to her amazing cheekbones, this talented actress always commands the screen. We took a few moments of Jodi Lyn O’Keefe’s time to find out how she stays so stunning.

What is your first makeup or beauty related memory?

I got started very young. My sisters who are 10 and 6 years older introduced me to the world of makeup. I copied everything they did. My mother was not thrilled!

What is your everyday morning beauty routine like?

I’m a big fan of lotion, lotion, and more lotion. I mean tons of it. Water is also one of the essentials to my morning routine – 20 splashes every morning. I protect my skin with sun block every day, and add a light foundation and a bit of powder. Mascara, of course!!! A red lip, but not as bold as I would wear at night.

Do you have any tricks that you have learned on sets?

Being on set has really helped me master the trick of removing makeup without irritating my skin. I use Neutrogena Night Calming Makeup Remover throughout the day to avoid clogging my skin. Another set trick is to use lavender oil to maintain healthy looking skin.

aquage silk shampoo

How do you keep your hair looking gorgeous?

I try to avoid using too much heat so I generally do not use a curling iron or straightener unless on set. I also try not to blow-dry it too often. I don’t shampoo my hair every day, but when I do I like to use hair masks and Aquage’s Silk Shampoo.

What are 4 products that are always in your makeup bag and you can’t live without?

My makeup artist and best friend, Gregory Arlt, who I have been working with for many years is a brand ambassador for MAC, and he helps me when I have a red carpet event. Basically, my beauty secret is two words: Gregory Arlt. It’s his face, I’m just wearing it. My makeup bag includes:
1) MAC Studio Care Blend
2) Rose Lip Balm by Terry
3) Rose Dust Blush by Chanel
4) Red lipstick – MAC’s Marilyn Monroe’s Reds, designed by Gregory Arlt (See above) specifically for MAC. He designed five shades and if I have to pick a favorite one that I couldn’t live without it would be Charmed, I’m Sure… It’s the perfect red!

How To Make Your Blow Out Last Longer

When I visited Blo Dry Bar, I fell in love with my blow out, but it was bittersweet. You have probably had the same experience. You get a great blow out, but it doesn’t last. So instead of fretting, I asked the pros at Blo Dry Bar how to make my blow dry last longer. Since every woman suffers the same issue, I decided to share their tips with you.

How to make your blow dry last longer:

Step 1 – A great way to make your ‘do last longer is to use dry shampoo in the morning. It not only absorbs natural oils and volumizes your hair when it is weighed down with oil and product, it also smells yummy! Celebs like Kelly Ripa and Jennifer Garner use dry shampoo to maintain their blo outs, and stylists use this style secret when coifing models for the runway. Spray at root around the head, lifting hair to get in close to the roots. Work through with brush and blast with the heat of a blow dryer. Style as usual.

Step 2 – At night, twist your hair on top of your head and clip or flip your head upside down and secure in a hairnet (remember to spray and bobby pin securely!) to keep your style bouncy. Rest your head on a satin pillowcase to prevent snags. Sleep.

Step 3 – If all else fails, there is always the perfect pony!

Other tips include:

• To prevent weighed down locks, start with uber-clean hair. Use a purifying shampoo and only a dab of conditioner on the ends of your hair. Make sure you choose your products according to your hair type. For finer hair, use product sparingly, for thicker hair be more generous.

• The key to a smooth mane is to make sure your hair is blown out completely dry and finished with a blast of cold air. Any moisture left in your hair will cause instant frizz. P.S. Always use shower cap when in the shower or bath!

• A little backcombing around your crown goes a long way when it comes to extending your blo out. An extra tease will ensure that your blo out stays red carpet-ready for days.

• Once styled, set your coif with a mist of Aerogel (our fave!) and don’t touch for 10 minutes. The longer your style sets, the longer it will last.

June 2014 Most Wanted – Alyssa’s Picks

June 2014 Most Wanted
June means summer’s officially here. It also means the temperature is going to skyrocket and no one feels like wearing heavy makeup or lotions or staying inside longer than they have to. These are my Most Wanted picks for June.

Body Shop Body Sorbet in Satsuma
If you’re overheating and want to cool down, this body gel is for you. It smells delicious, moisturizes, doesn’t get sticky and really does cool your skin down.
Elizabeth Arden Lip Protectant Stick SPF 15 Sheer Tint in Berry
Elizabeth Arden Lip Protectant Stick SPF 15 Sheer Tint Berry
This lip balm goes on sheer, hydrates and protects your lips and gives you a gorgeous sheer berry wash of colour. The SPF is a bonus.
Skin Fix Rash Repair Balm
Skin Fix Rash Repair Balm
Let’s face it, heat and humidity cause rashes and this balm, more like a cream, fixes them faster than you can imagine.
Laura Mercier Bonne Mine Face Stick Color in Peach Glow
Laura Mercier Bonne Mine Face Stick Colour Peach Glow
This is the perfect shade of peach for a summer blush. It’s super creamy and blendable. I’ve been wearing it non stop since I got it.
Sephora Delete All 5-Finger Nail Polish Remover
Sephora Delete All 5-Finger Nail Polish Remover
This ingenious design has spots for all your fingers to remove your nail polish at once. And it gets everything off in under a minute. Even glitter. Say goodbye to your tinfoil, this is officially the easiest way to take off your difficult polish.
L’Oreal Sublime Sun Silky Sheer BB SPF 50 Face Lotion
L'Oreal Sublime Sun Silky Sheer BB SPF 50 Face Lotion
I was worried this would be too dark for me since it comes in one shade. But it blended in perfectly. You need to use more than you normally would with a BB cream, so you’re getting close to what you should be using sunscreen wise. It’s super light on your skin and dries without giving you shine.
Lipstick Queen in Jungle Queen
Lipstick Queen Jungle Queen
This was designed to wear with leopard prints, which isn’t going to happen with me. Luckily this is the most perfect summer shade for me. A papaya coral shade, it’s so flattering and isn’t too bright. This is the first Lipstick Queen shade I’ve tried and if all their formulas wear so well there’s a good chance I’ll have a new addiction starting.

Pistol Polish June 2014 Review and Interview

Pistol Polish June 2014 Arrive
Pistol Polish is a nail polish subscription service that isn’t really like any of the others I’ve tried or seen. For $17.99 a month or $199.99 a year you get two nail polishes. As far as I can tell, you can’t pick the colours you want or get any random beauty products with it. It’s just straightforward nail polish in colours that are aimed at whatever trends are going on. I was really excited to try Pistol Polish because I liked the colours I’d seen online and I love the Pistol attitude of the company. So when Pistol offered to send us the June box I was all over it.
Pistol Polish June 2014 Description
The first thing I noticed was the descriptions of the polishes that came on the back of the box. Each description really cute and was dead on in explaining the thought process for each polish. The next thing I noticed was how complimentary the polishes were. You could easily use both together and create some amazing nail art. And they’re definitely beachy.
True Grit, I’ve Got It On
Pistol Polish June 2014 True Grit, I've Got It
I’m not a huge fan of textured polish, mainly because taking it off is too much work but True Grit, I’ve Got It On is a pretty shade that really looks like sand. It wasn’t too hard to get off either.
Vivacious And Tenacious
Pistol Polish June 2014 Vivacious And Tenacious
This is my ideal colour for summer. I don’t have a shade of green that’s this perfect a mint. It went on really well with no streaking and looked perfect after two coats. I’ve already used it twice since I’ve gotten it and I’m scared for the day when I run out.

I’m so impressed by Pistol Polish, the shipping didn’t take long, the colours are gorgeous and they’re so easy to apply without issues. I wish they had a store on their site where you can buy polish from previous months but I’ll definitely be getting more. Since I loved my experience with Pistol so much I did a short interview with Founder and CEO of Pistol Polish L.T. Niosi Brady.

Why did you choose to go into nail polish and did you have any experience with if before?
We chose nail polish because we were drawn to the unique creative aspect of this particular cosmetic – a woman can experiment with her nails more freely than eyeshadow, for example, and be more open to trying new colors, textures, nail art, ad techniques that she may not try in other cosmetics.
Why a subscription box and not a traditional online store?
We love subscription services because we’re intrigued by discovery retail, which is the concept that subscription services can expose customers to something that they may not have tried otherwise.
Why ‘Pistol Polish?’
If you mean why did we pick the name “PISTOL polish” it’s because we love the dual meaning of “pistol” — a pistol woman is a spitfire!
How would you describe a Pistol woman?
A “PISTOL woman” is a woman who dreams of what she wants to become – whatever that may be – and devotes her life to making that dream a reality.  She chases her dreams every damn day.
How do you choose what shades you’ll send out each month?
The shades are selected based on color trend studies – we look at what is going on in fashion, current events, and of course cosmetics – and make our decision based on that information.

You can sign up for Pistol Polish here.
