November Makeup Most Wanted

Where did December go? I know I am a few days late, but this year is going by so fast that I barely had time to blink before we were in the holiday season! If you are looking for some products to get prepped and ready for the holiday season, I’ve got you covered!

Sephora Collection Colourful Eyeshadow Filter Palette

Sephora Collection Colourful Eyeshadow Filter Palette in Sunbleached

I never know what eyeshadow colours to wear during the day at work. This palette has become my new best friend. The colours were inspired by a faded out Instagram filter, which is so much fun, but don’t buy it just because you love taking selfies. It’s the eyeshadow colours that you will really love! From the pale almost white of ‘Swan Song’ to the beige ‘Secret Boudoir’ the neutrals are my new favourite shadow base. After that you get into the pretty colours that will give you a look that is perfect for a workday. There is the shimmery rose of ‘Latergram’, the smoky purple of ‘Swell’, and the trusty brown of ‘#tbt’. I am in love with each and every one. With 10 different colours, there are enough different options for every day of the week.

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Overnight Purifying Gel

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Overnight Purifying Gel & Night Pads

Say goodbye to bad skin with this Nip + Fab skin care collection. If you are tired of fretting over clogged pores, acne and rough skin, you NEED to try these products!!! These are some of my favourite products of the whole year! The Purifying Gel can be applied every night after you clean your face. This gel gives you an extra deep clean by unclogging pores and helping to clear up skin while you sleep. For an even tougher clean, add in the Night Pads a few nights a week for deeper clean. These products include glycolic acid (exfoliates and helps skin tone), salicylic acid (clears pores), lactic acid (removes toxins) and hyaluronic acids (hydrates). They are really amazing for making you feel proud of your skin. Put your best face forward!

Maybelline Better Skin Foundation

Maybelline Better Skin Foundation

If you want to keep up your mission for amazing skin, after using the Nip + Fab collection, use this Maybelline foundation during the day. I haven’t had the best luck with finding the perfect Maybelline foundation until now. This foundation is meant to improve your skin by wearing it. It is supposed to reduce the look of acne, bumps, or redness. The second day that I wore it people started commenting on my skin. They were telling me that my skin looked great. I was getting compliments on my look. When I stopped using it, no other foundation gave me the same fixed and better than normal finish. I won’t be going long without it anymore.

yves rocher holiday nail polish

Yves Rocher Botanical Color Nail Polish Holiday Collection

Yves Rocher’s holiday nail polish collection is stunning. I am so bored with the average sparkly, glittery, gold and red nail polishes for the holiday season. Finally, there is something different. The Yves Rocher nail polish is full of pretty pale pastels with a hint of sparkle. There are also sleek nail polishes with a metallic finish. Frosted Pink, Frosted Green and Frosted Blue have tiny sparkles for a unique glitter finish. They also have a bit of a texture for something more diverse. Pearly Pink and Pearly Purple are smooth and rich. Now I just have to figure out how to pick just one!

The Body Shop Honey Bronze Face Gel

This bronzing gel looks intimidating, but don’t worry it’s not as dark and scary for your face as you might think. This bronzing gel is easy to apply all over your face for a quick bronze solution when the need strikes. Your complexion will determine how you apply. I’m fairly dark, so I just used a light hand to apply this gel directly to my face. If you have fair skin, you should mix it with your moisturizer to get a lighter more subtle bronze.

Skin Saving Acne Tips From Neutrogena

There is almost nothing worse than acne. It doesn’t matter if you suffer from regular acne or just the occasional breakout, it’s the worst. There are hundreds of products promising to give you beautiful clear skin, but it seems impossible to know what to trust. To take the guesswork out of preventing acne, we turned to Neutrogena and their expert, Toronto dermatologist, Dr. Paul Cohen.

Q: There are a lot of rumours and tales on what causes acne, but what are the actual most common causes of acne?

A: There are many different factors that can cause acne – hormones, genetics, bacteria, poor skin barrier function. Recent research also says diet can even have an impact. It’s a multi-factorial skin condition. Acne is primarily a hormonal condition driven by male hormones. Sensitivity to such hormones, combined with bacteria on the skin, and fatty acids within oil glands, cause acne. Simply explained – skin cells, sebum and hair can clump together into a plug in your pores; this plug gets infected with bacteria, resulting in a swelling. A pimple starts to develop when the plug begins to break down. Sometimes, p. acnes, the bacteria that live on our skin, also gets inside the clogged pore. Inside the pore, the bacteria have a perfect environment for multiplying very quickly and the pore becomes red and swollen. If the inflammation goes deep into the skin, an acne cyst or nodule can appear. Common sites for acne are the face, chest, shoulders, and back — the sites of oil glands. Up to 90% of people will suffer from acne at some point within their lifetime.

Q: Outside of skincare, are there lifestyle changes that people with acne should take?

A: I would say diet is important. The thoughts on this connection have really changed over the years. In the past, we were told that we should stay away from chocolate to avoid acne. Then that connection was disproved and the school of thought changed, saying food was not a factor. Now, we know that diet does affect breakouts from recent research. Specifically milk and dairy products, especially in women, have been recently proven to have a direct correlation. High sugar levels have also been noted as a factor, as they cause insulin levels to spike and cause a shift in hormones to regulate, and also foods with high-glycemic content.

Q: Are there different ways to treat different types of acne?

A: There are different types of pimples but they all start with plugged-up pores. Different medications or treatments may be used to treat the different types of acne, but all in all, it all starts the same. I tell all of my patients that using proper hygiene and the right treatment for your skin should help your skin.

Proper hygiene for acne-prone skin includes washing your face about twice each day. Use a mild soap made especially for people with acne, and warm water. Do not scrub the skin. Don’t try to burst the pimples. You may push the infection further down, causing more blocking and worse swelling and redness. Popping pimples makes scarring more likely. I also ask them to try to refrain from touching their face with their hands – it spreads dirt and bacteria that can aggravate acne.

Q: Moving into winter, are there any changes that people with acne should make to their skincare routine?

A: Alter your skincare routine for the cold weather – your skin changes with the seasons, so your skincare routine should as well! Use a milder cleanser, I usually recommend a liquid cleanser. Cleansers containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can be particularly drying, especially if you are using them in conjunction with other acne treatment products. You can go back to an acne-fighting cleanser once your skin doesn’t feel as dry. Instead, try using a gentle foaming cleanser.

If your skin is feeling very dry, you may want to scale back use of your acne creams and treatments. Try using your treatment products every other day until the dryness and flaking lessens.

Regular use of a moisturizer is important, even for those with acne. Remember, nearly all acne treatment products dry the skin to some extent. Choose a moisturizing gel or lotion because they are lighter than products labeled cream. Whatever moisturizer you choose, be sure it is marked non-comedogenic and oil-free.

Stay tuned for next week when we talk to Dr. Cohen about what you should look for in your cleanser to fight acne!

Summer Most Wanted Makeup Essentials

Whether it’s playing baseball, riding my bike, taking a dip or going to a summer festival, my summer is always packed. I am always on the go, so I demand more from my makeup in the summer. I have rounded up my Most Wanted Makeup for a busy summer with products that won’t let you down when it gets hot.

Cargo Water Resistant Blush – Honestly, I never thought that anyone would need a waterproof blush, but Cargo has given what we didn’t even know we needed. I am not recommending this blush because its waterproof though. I love it because the baked clay shade is gorgeous and it lasts all day long with just the perfect pink glow.

Olay Complete Moisturizer – I love a no nonsense face moisturizer in the summer time. Something that does it all with a sunscreen. Olay’s complete moisturizer is perfect for all skin types and with SPF 30 just right for every summer day.

Smashbox Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara – Smashbox has made their most popular mascara in a waterproof formula. This is an intense black mascara that makes your lashes super thick with mascara that won’t come off for hours. Warning to users though because this mascara is so thick, you need to apply very carefully and clean the brush often. It gets clumpy easily, so you need to use with care.

Pixi Lash Line Ink – Get perfectly lined eyes that won’t smudge or budge with the summer heat. This liner is so easy to use. The pen liner has a fine tip, so you don’t have to worry about getting black liner everywhere like some liquid liners.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Matic Eye Shadow – This new eye shadow pencil is easy to apply with just one swipe. It doesn’t smudge and it’s practically impossible to screw up. Perfect eye shadow that can last through anything, who could ask for more.

Maybelline Color Elixir – This combines a lip colour, balm and gloss to do everything in one. It gives me a glossy shine, but rich colour. And my lips feel soft and smooth. It’s perfect for summer and affordable, so I can get one in every colour.

Proactiv Solution – Summer activities can also mean annoying breakouts. Proactiv’s three step system is perfect for anyone suffering from acne. Stick to it all summer and you won’t have to worry about having a zit on the beach.

Secret Clinical Protection Deodorant – When the temperature rises, it’s time to get serious. The rest of the year I don’t mind wearing regular deodorant, but things change in the summer. If you are getting active, once it gets humid, you need more. Clinical Protection Deodorant will stand up against anything. I have never felt more confident than when I wear this stuff. So far, nothing has been able to beat it.
