Makeup Most Wanted June 2017 – Alyssa’s Picks

I’ve used so many new products in the past month that this list could be massive. Which makes these five pretty great considering how much they stood out to me. June is always a weird month for my skin and considering how humid Toronto has been, it’s needed all the help it could get.

Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash with Shea Butter

I’ve been using this body wash since winter, sometimes in other scents but mostly this one. The super creamy formula works for both winter AND summer. It’s really hydrating, doesn’t leave me sticky and just makes my skin feel really smooth. We have a couple body washes to test out but this is probably always going to be the one I buy when I run out. I particularly love the Shea Butter scent but there are really so many options.

Yes To Cotton Comforting Facial Wipes

I haven’t used a ton of Yes To products before, but I’m completely obsessed with these facial wipes. They might actually be the softest wipes I’ve ever used, but I guess that’s where the cotton comes in. Made with recycled cotton and cottonseed oil, these wipes are great for sensitive skin and for people who have a ton of allergies. There is a scent but it’s pretty faint and these get all my makeup and grime off. I definitely need to try more of this line.

Too Faced Sweet Peach Glow Peach-Infused Highlighting Palette

I don’t do contouring or highlighting as a general rule. I’m so fair that all bronzers look muddy or dirty and most highlighters just make me shinier or disappear into the redness of my cheeks. So I was mainly using this palette for the peachy blush in the middle (my favourite blush shade right now). Until I decided to try contouring with it just to see. It worked! Sweet Peach Glow is officially the only palette that I can use for contouring. Both the highlighter and bronzer are subtle enough for my fair skin but are also buildable. Everything just looks natural. And it smells like peaches!

Vichy Mineral 89

If you’re like me and you live off of Vichy’s Thermal Water all summer, you definitely need to try this gel version. Vichy calls it a skin booster, I call it a refreshing gel version of the water. It’s basically just Vichy’s Thermal Water with some hyaluronic acid. A skin brightening, hydrating gel if you will. You can use it on literally any part of your face including the eye contour and lips. I tend to use it right after I wash my face, before I use anything else. You can use it with a cotton pad, but I use my fingers. I still use the spray throughout the day but I find this much more effective as part of a skin care routine.

Garnier SkinActive Moisture Rescue Actively Hydrating Daily Lotion

Since my skin is a bi-polar version of combination, the moisturizer I use for my super dry skin in winter, does not work for my mostly oily skin in summer. This moisturizer is light enough to help my oily skin, while still balancing out my dry spots. It absorbs really quickly and is great for sensitive skin. It’s also fragrance-free for those of you who need it. This is a seriously great summer moisturizer for me.

Garnier Whole Blends Smoothing Leave-In Conditioner Quick Review

My hair has been struggling this year. It’s frizzier than ever before and doesn’t want to comply with any style. Enter this leave-in conditioner from Garnier. I’ve always liked Garnier’s styling products. They are affordable and leave my hair looking good without feeling like I have a ton of product in my hair. I would always prefer hair that I can run my fingers through versus a great complicated style. I like the natural feel. That’s what this coconut and cocoa butter leave-in conditioner gives me soft hair, less frizz and something that I can work with throughout the day without having to add a ton of products.

Spring Skin Care Most Wanted

Skyn Iceland Brightening Eye Serum – This eye serum isn’t just small in size, but also price. It’s unique, in that it is more like a gel than any other eye product I’ve used before. It feels really moisturizing around my eyes. Skyn Iceland says it’s meant to relax the skin and boost collagen, all meaning you can say goodbye to lines. I’ve had such success with Skyn Iceland in the past, I don’t doubt them at all.

Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil – If you want a little splurge that will last a long time, try this face oil from Dermalogica. You already know and trust the brand when you get a facial. Get that same moisture with this little oil. You can wear it alone or add it to your daily moisturizer to add a massive boost of hydration to your skin. This face oil is a little bit oily on my skin when worn alone, but you don’t notice it as much when mixed with other products. It does feel refreshing and give my face that nice dewy feel that I just want to touch.

Garnier Skin Active Clearly Brighter Gentle Smoothing Scrub – Garnier’s Skin Active Smoothing Scrub is everything my face wants in a daily face wash. It’s gentle enough to use every day, but tough enough that I feel really clean afterwards. I like that it’s not heavily scented. It even uses sustainable argan, so I can feel a bit better about using it. I do find that it dries out my face a bit, but that just gives me the opportunity to use some of those really super moisturizing creams. For this price, it’s just what my wallet wants for skin care too.

Strivectin Overnight Replenishing Moisture Mask – When in need of a burst of just straight moisture, this Strivectin Overnight Mask is an easy solution. Apply a generous layer on your face before bed and you are sure to wake up feeling extra moisturized. If you are like me, you might worry about getting cream all over your pillow. The Strivectin cream does absorb enough that by the time I was actually putting my head down, my fears were pretty much gone. I feel like this mask is the perfect secret skin care weapon. Personally, it’s not something that I need to use 2 or 3 times a week, but maybe once a month I could get my moisture on with Strivectin.

Garnier Whole Blends Hair Care

Garnier shampoo and conditioner has been such a reliable standard for so long that I was surprised to hear they were doing something new. If it ain’t broke, right? I used to be a very loyal Garnier hair care user. For a while in college, it was the only line I would use. It was the only thing that could handle my thick, frizzy, wavy hair.
Garnier Whole Blends Argan Oil + Cranberry
The new line is a more natural collection using ingredients that you are familiar with. The collections are paraben free, which is nice, but they aren’t ALL natural. They have natural extracts. The idea behind this line actually makes me a little sad. I wish that Garnier wasn’t playing on the more organic and natural trends in beauty. Since this line isn’t all natural, I kind of feel like I am being duped. Regardless, I wanted to give them a fair shot, since I have love for Garnier in my heart.

I tried the Colour Care line which includes argan oil and cranberry. I was actually really impressed with its performance. The line has a nice consistency and smell. It’s subtle and creamy. My scalp has been so dry this winter and nothing seems to fix it. I was shocked that after a few used to this line and my scalp wasn’t itchy any more. I was so busy thinking about the colour care aspect and whether it stopped frizz, that I almost didn’t even notice how moisturized my hair felt. I have tried a million products. Who would ever believe this Garnier line would be the one to solve all of my issues?

Now that I’m hooked, I am excited to try more from the Whole Blends line!

#ComeTogether With Garnier Color Styler Hair Dye

garnier color styler

Toronto has been Blue Jay crazy this fall with the Jays making to the post-season the first time in 22 years. As a softball player myself, it’s no surprise that I was caught up in the craze. So when the Garnier Color Styler hair dye in Bright Blue arrived at my door it was like a sign. I obviously had to show my pride!

I didn’t do it lightly though. I was mighty nervous. Sure, I had dyed my hair bold colours before, but that was in high school. I was much older and wiser now. So I read the instructions carefully and even watched a few videos to see how other’s had done their hair.

I finally stepped up to the plate and got ready. Garnier’s Color Styler dye is pretty simple. You just shake the bottle, pour the coloured dye on your hair and rub it into the sections that you want dyed. Your hair doesn’t have to be clean, but you shouldn’t have any oil based products in. The instructions say that oils help to remove the dye from your hair.

It’s easy to get on, just make sure that you go into this with a plan. If you are alone, once you start applying this hair dye it’s really hard to start fiddling with your hair or fixing things. This dye is really runny, so you need to work fast or else it will spill all over.

I chose to do one streak in the front of my hair and an ombré effect on my tips. Getting the ombré was a lot easier than I expected! The dye is pretty forgiving and it’s easy to apply more on the ends for a more saturated colour. In total, it probably only took me about 20 minutes from the time I opened the box to be done.

After, the instructions say to let it dry, then brush it out. Let it dry for as long as possible. It’s going to come out on your brush no matter what you do, so give it as much chance as possible. Then be prepared for some tangles.

This Garnier dye does have one serious downfall. It make your hair look extremely dry. Anywhere with the dye in it looked messy, dry and damaged. I know it’s because this is a clay dye that coats the hair, so it’s not your real smooth locks that you are seeing. It just didn’t look nice though. Because it comes out with product, I couldn’t apply any moisturizers or smoothers or even style it very much without it coming out.

By the time I left the house that night to watch the game my hair looked amazing. It was only a few hours later, when the Blue Jays had me sweating by giving away some runs that I saw another downfall. Don’t use this dye if you are going to be active and hot. The blue had rubbed off on my shoulder and my neck while I was getting pumped for the game. I was all for showing my blue pride, but I didn’t want to look like a Smurf. It was easy to clean off my skin, but I ended up putting my hair in a bun to keep any future blue dye off of my face.

The next day, it mostly washed away in the shower as promised with just a hint of blue in my hair waiting for my next shower.

Overall, I was happy with my Garnier Color Styler hair. The colour looked amazing. It was saturated and so cool. Apparently blue hair really suits me. I just wish it didn’t run so much. If it was a bit stronger, I feel like I would have had a lot of fun with my locks trying different styles. Instead I was worried about blue hands. Either way, I want to give a huge shout out to Garnier for helping me come together to support out Toronto Blue Jays!

Makeup Most Wanted September 2015 – Alyssa’s Picks

I spent most of September doing very little thanks to hand surgery, so all the products I used were either ones I was obsessed with over the summer, or products that I was able to use one-handed. Even with that narrowed list, I had a ton of favourites this month but these ones rose to the top of my September list.
Flower Transforming Powder-To-Creme Blush in Tickled Pink
Flower Transforming Powder To Creme Blush - Tickled Pink
I prefer powder blush over creme but this one has the best of both worlds. It starts off as a loose powder and as it hits skin it becomes very creamy. The first time I opened it, I was a little scared at how bright this shade looked but it blends in and becomes very natural. You can use this with a brush or your fingers which made it very easy to apply one-handed.
StriVectin Advanced Retinol Pore Refiner
StriVectin Advanced Retinol Pore Refiner
If there’s one thing about my skin that drives me nuts, it’s how huge my pores are. Since I have sensitive, combination skin it’s really difficult to find pore products that won’t turn my face bright red. StriVectin’s Pore Refiner is something of a miracle product for me. While I didn’t get instant massive results, my pores do look consistently smaller and my skin gets moisturized at the same time. There’s also zero irritation and my skin feels a lot smoother.
Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer in Ivory
Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer Ivory
I don’t wear a lot of concealer. I don’t have dark circles under my eyes and I don’t break out very often but I do get red, dry patches occasionally that I want to cover up. I’m so pale that finding a concealer that’s light enough for me is a challenge. The Better Skin concealer in Ivory is light enough to do the job and it lasts all day without flaking off.
Sephora Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner Waterproof in Caffeine Buzz
Sephora Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner Waterproof in Caffeine Buzz
Eyeliner is one of my favourite things and I’ll use any of them. Pencil, liquid, gel, it doesn’t matter to me. It just depends on what kind of look I want. But finding a good eyeliner for waterlines and tightlining is difficult. This Sephora brand eyeliner is pretty much made exactly for those things and I love that it’s matte. It’s easy to blend but once it sets, it doesn’t budge. I’ve been using this liner almost exclusively since I got it and I’m already thinking about other shades that I might pick up.
Garnier Fresh Cleansing Cloths
Garnier Fresh Cleansing Cloths
It doesn’t seem to matter how good a cleansing cloth is; if I’m removing waterproof mascara or eyeliner, one doesn’t quite do the job and I usually have to follow up with either another cloth or real makeup remover. Until now. Each of these cloths have two doses of Garnier’s Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser and it gets every drop of makeup off with one cloth. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling sticky and I don’t have to scrub to get mascara off. I’ve already bought a second package and it’s slowly starting to replace my favourite Neutrogena makeup remover wipes.

Spring Cleansers Most Wanted

Our skin changes with the weather and now that we’re starting to leave the coldness of winter and head into spring, we’re ready for some new skin care. These are our Most Wanted cleansers for spring.
Vichy Purete Thermale 3in1
Purete_Thermal_3in1_390x315_BIL_V1
This 3in1 cleansing milk for sensitive skin does everything from take off makeup to tone your skin and all the things in between. It’s super light and non greasy and you don’t have to rinse. There’s an added bonus of it not stinging your eyes and it smells amazing.
L’Occitane Shea Cleansing Oil
L'occitane shea cleansing oil
This cleansing oil turns milky when you add water and it leaves your skin feeling clean and so hydrated that you almost want to skip moisturizer. I’m pretty sure this one is limited edition, so grab it while you can find it.
Bliss Fabulous Makeup Melt Gel-To-Oil Cleanser
Bliss Fabulous Makeup Melt Gel-To-Oil Cleanser
I would never have called washing my face fun before, but this makeup melt is actually as close as I would get. You apply it to your face as a gel and watch as it turns into an oil and literally melts your makeup right off. This is crazy effective, especially on black eyeliner and mascara and it’s kind of satisfying to watch it work.
Garnier Clean + Gentle Clarifying Cleansing Gel
Garnier Clean + Gentle Clarifying Cleansing Gel
We already reviewed the Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser and we love this gel just as much. If you’re looking for any kind of lather, you won’t find it here. But it left my sensitive skin feeling really clean and not at all dried out. I even noticed a huge difference in redness.

Garnier Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser

Garnier Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser
I was already testing out some of Garnier’s Clean+ Sensitive Skin line (review coming soon) when Crowdsocial sent us the Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser to review. This is definitely not your typical makeup remover.
Swatches
You apply it on dry skin and it goes on like a lotion and the more you rub it in, the more it turns almost oil-like. It’s supposed to take off all kinds of makeup, including waterproof mascara, so I tested it out on some pretty tough makeup; Marc Jacobs Gel Eyeliner, Rimmel’s Apocalips Lipstick and Lancôme’s Grandiôse Mascara.
Garnier Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser - During
I have to say it really didn’t look pretty while I was rubbing the lotion in but I could literally see it working and by the end it got all the makeup off when I wiped everything off with a cotton pad.
Garnier Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser - After
I was pretty amazed at how much makeup this lotion cleanser removed. It also left my skin feeling really soft. And since it’s for sensitive skin, there was no burning or irritation at all. I only wish the tube opened at the top instead of the bottom because I have some serious spillage every time I open it.

Garnier Clean+ Cleansers For Combination Skin Review

GarnierClean+Combination Garnier recently released a new skin care line called Clean+ that’s made for specific skin types. My skin is a little more than textbook combination, it goes to extremes. One day it can be dry and flaky and the next it’s completely oily. And did I mention it’s pretty sensitive. Combination skin has a tendency to be overlooked in favour of oily, dry or normal in skin care lines so I was really excited to try cleansers made for combination skin. What was even better was that I wasn’t disappointed at all.

Clean+ Purifying Cleansing Foam is a typical foaming cleanser. You squeeze the bottle, you get foam, you wash and so on. The difference came in the results. My skin wasn’t tight or dry in the usual spots and it didn’t feel greasy anywhere. I was pretty much sold at this point and then I got to the exfoliator.

The Clean+ Balancing Gel Exfoliator is something I’ve needed forever. I love scrubs but my skin doesn’t always get along with them. This gel exfoliator was gentle enough for the sensitive side of my skin but got the job done. Whatever scrubby bits are in there are small enough to not irritate my skin but also left it balanced and feeling really clean.

I really hope more companies hop on the combination bandwagon but if they don’t at least I’ve found something that works.
