Makeup Most Wanted June 2018

It seems like the weather in Toronto went from winter to middle of summer in two days. As a result June was hot and sticky and the products I loved the most definitely reflected that.

Live Clean Mineral Clay Rebalancing Shampoo

Like my skin, my hair goes a little crazy in the summer. My roots get incredibly oily and itchy and my hair just dries out. Live Clean’s Rebalancing Shampoo has done a really good job of keeping my scalp itch free while moisturizing my ends. The combination of three mineral clays (Kaolin, Montmorillonite and Bentonite) along with apple cider, witch hazel and tea tree have really succeeded in balancing out my head where other products have failed. There’s a matching conditioner that I use along with it but the shampoo is really the star.

L’Occitane Citrus Verbena Moisturizing Body Foam

I really look forward to the new verbena products that L’Occitane releases every summer and this Moisturizing Body Foam might be my favourite yet. I’ve used a few body foams in the past but nothing that’s ever blown me away or seemed like more than a gimmick. L’Occitane’s version however is both cooling and extremely hydrating. It’s like a hair mousse in texture and a little goes a long way. The iconic L’Occitane verbena scent is perfect for summer (and keeps the bugs away) and it’s really easy to throw in a bag if you’re going to the beach or on a road trip.

Beautycounter Color Intense Lipstick in Brunch

I’m generally a matte liquid lipstick person but in the summer I like things a little lighter. This lipstick has insane colour payoff, I got full coverage in one swipe and even when I blotted it down a bit, I still have a ton of colour. There are eight Color Intense shades but my favourite is Brunch, a tawny pink with a hint of coral that comes out when it blots down. Beautycounter calls this long wearing and while it’s a lot better than some creamy lipsticks, you’ll definitely have to reapply. That said, this lipstick is incredibly creamy and comfortable and there’s peppermint oil in it that keep your lips feeling cool. And I love that Beautycounter doesn’t have a whole lot of crap in their products.

Invisibobble Magic Mermaid in Ocean Tango

Onto another one of my all time favourite products. I love Invisibobble so much that I haven’t used another kind of hair tie in about a year. These keep my hair secure and I don’t get headaches from them like I do with other hair elastics. For the summer they’ve released the Magic Mermaid collection that changes colour in UV light. There are two shades; Ocean Tango (light blue to dark blue) and Coral Cha-Cha (pale pink to hot pink). I love the Ocean Tango colours and even though I can’t see it changing colour, it’s fun to know that it does.

Body Fantasies Hearts & Daisies

When the weather is hot, I tend to like a body spray over a perfume since they’re generally lighter. And just in time for summer, Body Fantasies have released Hearts & Daisies, a light, fruity and floral scent. With notes of green apple, pink peony, daisy and creamy woods, this is a great summer body spray.

Sassy Lips Review

If you’re looking for a way to impress your friends next time you pull out your lipstick, check out Sassy Lips. Their lipstick may not look like much from the black box, but when you open the lipstick, I promise you will be shocked.

Sassy Lips Keep Em Guessing is a color changing lipstick line that is a brilliant shade in the container and on your lips. Each shade changes with your PH balance, so this lipstick could be slightly different on each person and even on different days. The green ‘My Life RN’ turns into a fuchsia, ‘So Many Feelings’ is a black lipstick that turns to a wine tone, and ‘No Chill Zone’ goes from blue to mauve.

Then you have the Sassy Lips Make The Moment lipstick collection. This one is also a colour changer, but in a different way. These clear lipsticks have dried flowers and gold flecks inside. Each of the sticks turn to a glossy pink tint that is really moisturizing.

Sassy Lips lipstick may not be the most long lasting or brightest colours, but it is the most impressive lipstick you can pull out of your bag.

Lipstick Queen Dating Game Collection

I adore Lipstick Queens collections and their newest one, Dating Game is a set of four pink lipsticks perfect for Valentine’s Day. With the tagline flirt, date or fall in love – have a fling with pink! there’s a pink for every mood.

I have to say, I’m really not a pink person but these four shades are seriously pretty and super flattering. They’re all really creamy and comfortable with major colour payoff. They’re not transferproof but do a decent job sticking around but reapplying is going to be necessary, especially if you’re eating. The names of the shades are adorable as well; Good Catch (soft, rosy blush), Bad Boy (fuchsia), Mr. Right (warm, rosy pink) and Mr. Right Now (bold magenta).

I personally love Mr. Right but Good Catch and Bad Boy are close behind and Mr. Right Now is probably going to be Stephanie’s favourite spring lipstick. Even if you don’t manage to hunt these down for Valentine’s Day, you can always plan ahead for next year.

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink

Maybelline’s Matte Ink is literally the longest lasting lip colour that I’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing. There is a wide range of colours in the collection and none looks exactly like it does on the outside of the package, so be cautious. The light tones are lighter than I expected and the dark ones are darker. To get full coverage on your lips, you have to layer it on thick. Because of that the Maybelline Lip Ink does tend to be a bit sticky, sometimes very sticky. Some people hate the feel of it, because it takes a long, long time to dry. I’ve tried applying other products over top, but the stickiness remains. I think I might try a translucent powder next.

Despite all of that, the Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink stays on forever. You think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. This lip colour won’t come off with drinks, with food, with a night on the town. Maybelline’s Lip Ink stayed on while I slept! And when I woke up, it was still almost impossible to take it off. You have to use a combination of water, makeup removers and soap.

It you want a lip colour that will never let you down… and let’s be honest, who doesn’t… this one is for you!

Lipstick Queen Chess Collection

There’s really nothing I like better than interesting makeup collections that aren’t eyeshadow palettes. Lipstick Queen’s newest offering is the Chess collection, six matte lipsticks that Lipstick Queen founder Poppy King says is ‘beauty and brains combined in a lipstick!’ Each lipstick is named after a chess game piece and has a personality description attached to it. Now, I have zero knowledge about chess, so I don’t know how well they actually fit with the game but it’s really fun picking a lipstick based on shade and/or personality.

Lipstick Queen really thought of everything for the Chess collection’s packaging. The boxes have the game pieces on them and half the lipsticks are in white tubes and the other half in black. Just like the game. All the lipsticks are matte and apply extremely smoothly. These are not transfer-proof and will definitely require touch ups but they also really moisturizing and feel like you’re just wearing lip balm. I actually have a really hard time picking a favourite shade. I was initially drawn to Bishop but there isn’t a single shade that isn’t flattering on me.

Pawn, Bishop, Knight, King, Rook, Queen

Pawn (Loyal) is a deep nude, Bishop (Determined) is a determined mauve, Knight (Courageous) is dashing mocha, King (Noble) is a rich berry, Rook (Unpredictable) is brick red and the ever famous Queen (Supreme) is ruby red. The bonus of getting all six shades as a press sample, is that I can decide which shade I want to wear depending on my mood. I don’t know if I could actually pick just one.

Makeup Most Wanted November 2016: Alyssa’s Picks

I can’t believe it’s already the end of November; it feels like it was just summer and now we’re working on holiday posts. These are my favourite things from the past few months.

Korres Golden Krocus Ageless Saffron Elixir
korres-golden-krocus-ageless-saffron-elixir
Right now my anti-aging needs are mostly preventative but considering I’m a skin care junkie, I love to try new products. Boosters seem to be the new serums lately and I’m seeing them everywhere so I’ve tried a couple. Korres has my favourite of them so far. The Golden Krocus Elixir is pretty delightful. I love everything from the packaging, to the texture, to the slightly spicy scent. Made with Greek Saffron, you really only need a drop or two of this booster to get results. Now obviously I’m not looking for major results in wrinkles in my skin because I don’t have any; but my skin looks brighter, feels smoother and really just glows. It’s so light that it absorbs within seconds and you follow it up with whatever serums and moisturizers you’d normally use. It really feels amazing. I love the scent so much, I’ve been reaching for my unscented options.

Clinique Lash Power Flutter-To-Full Mascara
clinique-lash-power-flutter-to-full-mascara
I have so much mascara that I actually have trouble on a regular basis deciding which one to use but I’ve been using this one for months and absolutely love it. I generally like Clinique’s mascaras but they all seem to serve only one purpose. I have one for volume and one for length but Flutter-To-Full is kind of a three-in-one. There’s a dial with three options that let’s you control how much intensity you get. The lowest form gives you a barely there, natural look. The next one amps it up a bit but still stays fairly natural and the third gives you major night look drama. I tend to always use the third option because I love big lashes but I appreciate the options. It also stays on forever without smudging or flaking. Clinique says 24 hours and I totally agree with that. They also say it comes off with warm water and I would like to disagree, I have the hardest time getting this one off but that also means I can trust it not to disappear on me.

Sephora Collection Double Time Double Ended Brush Set
sephora-double-time-brush-set
I think one of the most underrated things about Sephora is their variety of Sephora brand brush sets. There’s something for every need and every budget and while they’re not always the highest quality, they usually do a decent job. I really love this Double Time set because each brush is double ended, so you get twelve travel brushes that look like six full size ones and handle like full size. This is a great set for travel because you have every brush you could need in one place and the faux leather is super soft and durable; just like the brushes themselves.

Avon Skin So Soft Winter Soft Nourishing Hand Cream
avon-skin-so-soft-winter-soft-nourishing-hand-cream
I think one of the first hand creams I ever used was from Avon (my mom sold it when I was in high school) and it’s really nice to know that it still works as well as I remember. I’m so picky about hand cream and this one works quite nicely. It goes on smoothly, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave my hands feeling greasy. It has Shea Butter, Babassu Oil and Vitamin E to soften and hydrate your hands. While it doesn’t last 24 hours for me like it claims, I only have to use it a couple times a day and my hands don’t feel dried out.

Maybelline The Loaded Bolds in Gone Greige
maybelline-loaded-bolds-gone-greige

As much as I love a matte liquid lipstick, the winter dryness isn’t really letting me use them as much as I did in the summer, so I’m back to a creamier, more traditional lipstick. Maybelline’s The Loaded Bolds aren’t really a typical lipstick. They’re matte but they’re also extremely hydrating and comfortable. I keep forgetting that I’m wearing them because they feel like lip balm. The shades are also incredibly pigmented. One swipe and I have full coverage and zero patchiness. But it’s my favourite shade that surprises me the most. Greige anything doesn’t look good on me, it really washes me out and makes my skin, well, grey. I tried Gone Greige because I really wanted to love it. It’s such a 90’s inspired shade and I am a 90’s kid. So I was completely shocked when the grey-ish brown actually looked good on me. I hope they end up releasing more shades, because ten just doesn’t seem enough. At least I have a winter lipstick that I’ll be using a lot. And it’s not red.

Lipstick Queen Most Wanted

lipstick-queen-most-wanted
Cult fave British lipstick company, Lipstick Queen is finally going to be really accessible in Canada. As of today, they’re officially at Murale and available on the Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique site which means more Optimum Points for all the lipstick lovers! I’d only had a chance to try one Lipstick Queen lipstick in the past, so I was really excited when we received a package from them ahead of the launch. These are our Most Wanted Lipstick Queen shades.

Jungle Queen

lipstick-queen-jungle-queen

This is the shade I’d tried previously and I still love it a lot. It’s been two years since I first tried it and somewhere along the line it went missing so I was thrilled for a replacement. I actually wear a lot more lipstick now than I did then and this papaya-coral shade is really flattering on me. I’m still not wearing it with leopard print like it was intended but it’s a great summer shade and will transition really well into fall. I love that I can wear a super bright shade without drying out my lips.

Medieval
lipstick-queen-medieval
Speaking of going into fall, this sheer red is going to carry me way into winter. Inspired by medieval times when women used lemon juice to bring the red out in their lips, this red is going to look good on everyone. It feels almost like you’re wearing a tinted lip balm but with a touch more colour.

Hello Sailor
lipstick-queen-hello-sailor
Dark blue lipstick is definitely a trend right now but this lipstick isn’t actually dark blue. It’s a deep blackberry tint that makes your teeth look whiter. I’ve actually started using this one as a lip balm because it’s so moisturizing, gives me a hint of colour and won’t melt when it’s hot out.

Frog Prince
lipstick-queen-frog-prince
Frog Prince (and Hello Sailor) is one of the reasons I love Lipstick Queen, you just never know what to expect. Does this lipstick look green? Yes. Does it go on green? Not even a little. This is one of those colour adjusting lipsticks that turns into the best shade of rosy pink for your lips. It also turns into a stain, so you get colour for hours. Obviously the swatches below won’t be exactly the shade you’ll get on your lips but it’s a rough idea.

There are tons of other Lipstick Queen shades that we love (another post coming soon) and that we’d love to try (I need to get my hands on Black Lace Rabbit), and now that Canadians can get them at Murale it’ll be so much easier for everyone to discover their favourite shade as well.

Makeup Most Wanted May 2016 : Alyssa’s Picks

I can’t believe this year is flying by and it’s already June (but it feels like July in Toronto). Here’s what I used the most in May.
Clarins Multi-Active Day and Night creams
Clarins Multi-Active Day-Night
I’ll be honest and say I don’t always follow the moisturizer day and night cream rules. I find them interchangeable for the most part and just go by what my skin feels like it needs. But the Clarins Multi-Active Jour (day) is just light enough for daytime while keeping my skin feeling really hydrated while the Multi-Active Nuit (night) is a little heavier for night but not as heavy as a lot of night creams are. Using both of them has really helped keep my combination skin moisturized while not letting it get greasy. These smell so amazing but if you have issues with scent, keep away.
Live Clean Multi Boost Shampoo and Conditioner
Live Clean Vitamin Multi Boost Shampoo
Spring is a weird time for my hair. It’s not as dried out, the humidity makes my frizz pop and my roots get a little oily. Live Clean’s Multi Boost line kept it looking healthy and it stayed pretty manageable. I would recommend this to someone whose hair falls into the normal category. It’s not quite enough for really dry hair and those with oily scalps might have some greasiness. I love that I can add vitamins to my hair though and that it’s sulfate and paraben free.
Clinique Pop Glaze Sheer Lip Colour + Primer in Sprinkle Pop
Clinique Pop Glaze Sprinkle Pop
I’ve been wearing most matte liquid lipsticks lately but on days when I don’t want to bother but still want a pop of colour on my lips, I reach for Sprinkle Pop. It’s a really pretty, medium bright pink that goes on super sheer but still leaves some colour. It’s not a traditional lipstick, more like a tinted lip balm that you apply like a lipstick. Even after the colour wears off, it leaves a slight hint of colour but tons of moisture. I can leave my lip balm at home when I put this one on. My lips are moisturized for hours.
Rimmel Clear Complexion Clarifying Powder
Rimmel Clear Complexio Clarifying Powder
With spring and summer come humidity and my skin ends up on the oilier end of the spectrum and I get seriously shiny. Rimmel’s Clear Complexion Clarifying Powder is one of the few powders I’ve tried that actually leaves me looking matte for a long period of time without getting cakey. I wish it came with some kind of applicator so I could throw it in my purse but even when I put it on before I leave the house I know I won’t look shiny for most of the day. It’s also supposed to minimize breakouts thanks to it’s Pureskin complex.
Maybelline Colour Tattoo Concentrated Crayon in Bronze Truffle
Maybelline Colour Tattoo Concentrated Crayon Bronze Tattoo
I love the original Colour Tattoo shadows but I hate applying them for my fingers. From the first time I tried the Concentrated Crayon, I was hooked. You get the same colour payoff and staying power as the pots but it’s so much less messy and you can throw it in your purse for touch ups. Bronze Truffle is a great shade that takes me from day to night. I use a little in the morning and layer on more at night for more intensity. I have a couple shades of the crayons and this one is by far my favourite.

Makeup Most Wanted March 2016: Alyssa’s Picks

March was a weirder month than usual for Toronto. It warmed up significantly and then got really cold. It really ended up affecting the products I used the most, so here’s what I couldn’t live without last month.
Vichy Liftactiv Serum 10 Supreme
Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 Supreme
This serum isn’t new, but it is recently reformulated. I’m slowly starting to incorporate more serums into my skin care routine now that I’m almost into my mid-thirties. Liftactiv Serum 10 Supreme is helping me prevent some of the bigger aging issues while keeping my skin glowing. It’s also not too harsh for my sensitive skin and absorbs instantly.
REN Skincare Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream
REN evercalm_global_protection_day_cream_2
I’d been wanting to try REN for a long time, especially their Evercalm line which is for sensitive skin and protects against environmental pollution. So to say I was excited to try the Global Protection Day Cream could be considered an understatement. Luckily, this cream more than lived up to my expectations. It’s a little thicker than you might expect from a day cream but it absorbs really well and I did actually notice a reduction in redness and sensitivity. It has so many amazing ingredients in it that I’m not surprised at how well it works and the scent definitely has an herbal tinge to it but not enough that it bothered me. I’m definitely going to get my hands on the rest of this line.
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in L.A. Sunset
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick L.A. Sunset
March is one of those transitional months where it’s so hard to decide what shades of makeup you want to wear. And while I wasn’t completely ready to ditch my red lipsticks, I definitely needed something brighter some days. Enter L.A. Sunset, which is a gorgeous creamy coral red. It’s a perfect in between shade, not too red and not too coral. The formula is super comfortable and even though it was a cream lipstick, the wear time was better than most. I’ll be wearing this shade long into the summer as well.
John Masters Organics Lip Calm Collection
John Masters Organics Lip Calm Collection
When I wasn’t wearing the Smashbox lipstick, I was wearing a ton of matte lipstick which really did a number on my lips. If you know me, you know I live off lip balm. My desk is covered with about 8 different kinds and I leave them everywhere, purses, my car, my nightstand, etc…The Lip Calm collection comes with the original citrus Lip Calm and three new flavours, Raspberry, Vanilla and Peppermint. While I would normally gravitate towards anything mint, I’m actually completely obsessed with the citrus and raspberry and have really only been using them. The lip balm is really soft and smooth, easy to apply and kind of melts into your lips and leaves them really hydrated. These never get hard or drag on your lips and they’re probably my new favourite lip balm.
Too Faced Candlelight Glow in Rosy Glow
Too Faced Candlelight Glow Rosy Glow
I’m not into the contour/highlight thing at all. Partially because I’m so pale everything is too dark for me. But when people start telling me I look paler than usual, I need to do something. Rosy Glow is perfect because it makes me look like, well, I’m glowing. I use it with a really light hand and it makes my skin look amazing and not like I’m halfway to being a ghost. The Warm Glow shade is nice as well but Rosy just looks better with my skin tone. This is the only highlighter I’ve used on a regular basis and I’m ok with that.

Too Faced La Crème Color Drenched Lipstick

Too Faced La Creme Lipstick Box
I’ve used a ton of Too Faced products over the year but other than my beloved Melted Liquid Lipstick, I’ve never used their lipsticks. Even though they just launched La Matte Lipstick (and trust me, I’ll definitely get around to those), I was way more interested in the new La Crème shades. We’ve been using so much matte lipstick lately that I’ve almost forgotten what creme lipstick feels like. And with names like Unicorn Tears, I was sold. We got to try eight of the new shades (we’re missing Topless and Sugar Daddy) and one of the originals, Pink Chocolate.
Too Faced La Creme Lipstick New Shades
These lipsticks go on ridiculously smooth. They’re soft enough to be able to maneuver but hard enough that they don’t end up all over the place. Because they’re not matte, they’re also not transfer-proof and you really have to reapply pretty often. The upside is, they’re really comfortable and moisturizing and feel fantastic.
Too Faced La Creme Lipstick New Shades Swatches
The shades are also incredible. I had to try Unicorn Tears first because I was so intrigued. It’s an iridescent shimmer that you can wear on it’s on or over another lipstick and it’s insanely gorgeous. Pink Chocolate might be the oldest shade in the bunch but it’s one of those shades that’ll look great on anyone. WHAM!, however, is my favourite. Too Faced calls it an iridescent raspberry and that’s a decent enough description but it’s really so much more than that. It’s the perfect red for a night out when you want something different. The shimmer just makes it something special.

I might have favourite shades but they’re really all stunning and there’s something for everyone with over twenty colours to pick from. I might have a hard time deciding between the shades and the names, but I’m sure I’m not the only one.
