Most Wanted Summer Mascara

If I could wear one makeup product for the rest of my life, it would be mascara. A bunch of new ones for summer? Yes please! I constantly change my mascara based on my mood or look I want to go for. These four have been in a pretty heavy rotation lately.

Cover Girl Total Tease Mascara

I’m personally not a fan of Cover Girl mascara in general. I like a big fibre brush and theirs are usually hard plastic which hurts my eyes. Total Tease does have a hard, plastic brush but it doesn’t bother me as much. That said, there’s a serious learning curve to using this interesting wand. Once I got the hang of it, I was rewarded with a ton of length and nicely separated lashes. The little comb helped me get every tiny lash. I found Total Tease way a lot easier to remove than other Cover Girl mascaras.

Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara

Again, my issue with Revlon mascaras was similar to my Cover Girl problem. But Mega Multiplier completely blew me away. Mega is actually a good word for the results I got. The brush gave me massive volume and length and the formula forms little tubes around each lash so there’s no flaking to worry about. Seriously, I feel asleep with this one and woke up to perfect mascara. I have a feeling I’ll be replacing this one when I run out.

MAC Bold & Bad Lash Mascara

If you’ve used MAC’s Haute & Naughty mascara in the past, you know they love to shove brushes in other brushes and give you a ton of lash options. Bad & Bold is a little different in that there’s not only two brushes but also two formulas. The big brush gives you major volume (no clumps!) and the smaller brush is supposed to give you smudge-proof definition to your bottom lashes. I don’t put mascara on my bottom lashes so I use the smaller brush to get all the little lashes on top and to comb through. The results I get are pretty close to fake lashes.

L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara

Of all the mascaras I’ve tried recently, Lash Paradise is hands down my ideal brush. It’s big, it’s fluffy and it gets my lashes huge. It also fills in the little eyelash gaps on my left eye without looking like I have an eyeliner smudge. I don’t have a ton of experience with L’Oreal mascaras but if Lash Paradise is any indication, I can see why they’re so popular.

Most Wanted Summer Skin Care – Alyssa’s Picks

My combination skin is pretty nuts and I have to change my products along with the seasons. Once summer hits, my skin gets oilier but the dry patches never fully go away, do I need to find products that are a little lighter that combat both issues. Add in the fact that I’m extremely pale and sunscreen gets it’s own post.
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths
My skin isn’t as sensitive as I expect when it comes to skin care, except in summer when allergies are added onto all my issues. These cleansing cloths are the most gentle and effective way I’ve found to take off my makeup. They’re soap and fragrance free and do a better job getting my makeup off than most cloths. I get zero irritation around my eyes and it doesn’t leave a chemical taste in my mouth when I’m taking off matte lipstick. You don’t have to rinse after these and my skin doesn’t feel dried out. Just clean.
L’Oreal Hydra-Total 5 Ultra-Soothing Micellar Water
L'Oreal Hydra-total 5 ultra-soothing micellar water
I didn’t have a great experience when I tried the Hydra-Total Ultra-Even collection and it’s clear that I should’ve been using the Ultra-Soothing routine because my skin likes it so much better. This micellar water does a great job cleansing my skin. I wish the bottle was a little easier to squeeze but you don’t need much of this one anyways. It’s a great makeup remover but I’ll use something else to take off stubborn mascara first. Follow it up with the matching toner and you’re good to go.
L’Occitane Pivoine Sublime Perfecting Toner
loccitane Pivoine Sublime Perfecting Toner
I love toners. I find them refreshing and they’re an important part of balancing my skin out but finding a good one that’s alcohol-free is a challenge. L’Occitane’s Pivoine Sublime Perfecting Toner is a great addition to my arsenal. It gets a lot of stuff that cleansers leave behind while leaving my skin balanced and refreshed but not dried out. I don’t love the peony scent but it’s light enough that I can ignore it.
Korres Wild Rose Vitamin C Active Brightening Oil
Korres Wild Rose Vitamin C Active Brightening Oil
First off, I love anything rose. So a rose oil, with actual rose petals in it? Yes please! Luckily this oil actually does something other than look and smell pretty. The sun and heat really make my skin kind of dull and sunscreen build up makes it feel not so great sometimes. This oil really sinks into my skin and gives it a ton of hydration while brightening up my skin. It also doesn’t leave me great at all.
Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Oxygenating Gel Cream
Philosophy-Take-A-Deep-Breath Oil-free oxygenating gel cream
I usually switch to a gel cream moisturizer in the summer because they’re a lot more cooling and more suited to combination skin. Take A Deep Breath might be hitting my top five moisturizers ever. It absorbs almost instantly and leaves my skin really hydrated but feeling like there’s nothing on my face. My skin actually looks a lot better since I’ve been using it and this moisturizer smells amazing. I actually want to use it more often because I love the scent so much. I already have a travel size version of this one put away for my trip next month.

Influenster Voxbox: L’Oreal Hydra-Total 5 Ultra-Even Collection

L'Oreal Ultra Even Collection
It’s been almost a year since I’ve received an Influenster Voxbox and of the few I’ve tried I’ve had really great results. This time I received L’Oreal’s new Hydra-Total 5 skin care line. There are three variations to this collection; Ultra-Even, Ultra-Fresh and Ultra-Soothing. Of the three, the one I would’ve picked for my sensitive, combination skin would’ve been Ultra-Soothing, so I was a little skeptical when I received Ultra-Even. Yes, there are elements to it that make sense for my skin, I’d like to even out my skin and smooth it out a little but I wasn’t sure how well it would work on me. So, I’m going to write about them from worst to best.
Ultra-Even Moisturizer
L'Oreal Ultra Even Moisturizer
This cream is supposed to moisturize, even skin tone, reduce dark spots, illuminate and smooth. It’s one of the thickest creams I’ve ever tried but it doesn’t absorb very well. It’s also extremely white and left my very fair skin even paler (I didn’t know it was possible) and it stayed that way the morning after. I was asked repeatedly if I was feeling ok because I was so pale. The scent is pretty faint but the moisture level was awful, I had to put another moisturizer over it, the paleness stayed anyways. Because I’m so fair already, I can deal with looking slightly paler but I’d love to know if people with darker skin had the same issue.
Ultra-Even Toner
L'Oreal Ultra Even Toner
I’ve learned that alcohol-based toners are not my friend but since I was sent this collection to review as a whole, I couldn’t exactly leave this toner out. I wish I had, it burned quite a bit and made my skin feel really dry. It probably didn’t help that it’s paired with a scrub cleanser but I wasn’t about to try it with anything else. Too bad though, it smells amazing.
Ultra-Even Lotion
L'Oreal Ultra Even Lotion
This day moisturizer comes with SPF 20 and that’s pretty much the best thing I can say about it. Normally I would add another SPF with a moisturizer but I had to use so much of this lotion to get any kind of hydration that I was basically good on the sunscreen front. This lotion really did nothing for my skin and I really didn’t enjoy the scent.
Ultra-Even Scrub
L'Oreal Ultra Even Scrub
Now we finally get to the product I actually liked! This scrub did a great job exfoliating my skin. It has a really fresh, grapefruit scent and made my skin feel really clean without stripping it. It’s not too harsh for my sensitive skin but I probably wouldn’t use it every day.

I have to say, I’m pretty disappointed in this collection as a whole. Granted, this clearly wasn’t the right line for my skin but it’s very rare for me to absolutely hate a product, let alone three in a collection. Luckily the scrub was the saving grace but it wasn’t great enough to save everything.

Most Wanted Red Lips For Fall 2015

Most Wanted Red Lips For Fall 2015
There’s really nothing more quintessentially fall than a red lip and there are a ton of them to choose from. These are our Most Wanted reds for fall.
GOSH Velvet Touch Lipstick in Matte Classic Red
GOSH Velvet Touch Lipstick Matte Classic Red
This red is definitely what I think of when I picture a classic red and I love the matte formula. It’s not drying but does a good job of staying put. It’s a gorgeous shade for a timeless look.
Cover Girl LipPerfection Lipcolour in Hot
Cover Girl LipPerfection Lipcolour Hot
Another classic red, Hot is a little on the creamier side and is really flattering on even my very fair skin tone. You might want to use a lipstick primer with this one, it doesn’t have the greatest staying power but I expect that from a lipstick this soft.
L’Oreal Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Pure Reds in Julianne’s Red
L'oreal Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Pure Reds Julianne's Red
Of all the shades in the Pure Reds collection, I was instantly drawn to this coral-red and it makes sense considering I have relatively similar colouring to Julianne Moore. If you’re on the fair side and a classic red is too much for you, this is a great alternative.
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Canadian Flare
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick Canadian Flare
A collaboration between Smashbox, Flare Magazine and artist Donald Robertson; this coral red was inspired by the Canadian flag. It’s a little on the sheer side, so you can layer to get the effect you want. Canadian Flare is really moisturizing and comfortable to wear.
byTERRY Terrybly Velvet Rouge Liquid Velvet Lipstick in My Red
byTERRY Terrybly Velvet Rouge My Red
For the liquid lipstick fans, My Red is a classic matte red that smells like roses. The unique ergonomic applicator takes a little getting used to but the payoff is huge. It lasts for hours and while it’s not transfer proof, you don’t have to reapply constantly. It’s also a lot less drying than I expected from a matte, liquid lipstick.

Influenster VoxBox: L’Oreal Fibralogy

*I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.*

VoxBox L'Oreal FibralogyAlmost every hair product makes promises but so few follow through, so when L’Oreal introduced the Fibralogy collection and promised thicker hair I was pretty skeptical. When I got an email from Influenster letting me know I was getting the Fibralogy VoxBox I was definitely willing to give it a shot. I have super fine hair and it’s really wavy, so anything that seems to make my hair a little thicker usually gives me crazy frizz. And if I can get rid of the frizz, I get flat hair.
VoxBox L'Oreal Fibralogy Shampoo And Conditioner
The Fibralogy set starts off pretty normal. There’s a shampoo and conditioner and they’re both pretty great quality that I’ve come to expect from L’Oreal hair products. And they smell seriously delicious, like blue Freezie delicious. These are the two products you’re always supposed to use. They work well for shampoo and conditioner but I can’t tell you how they thicken because I haven’t used them without the Thickening Booster yet.
VoxBox L'Oreal Fibralogy Thickening Booster
The Thickening Booster is really the part of the collection that makes you hair thicker. You apply it after shampoo and put the conditioner right over it and rinse them off together. You can use it once a week or for the intensive treatment, twice.

I’ve only been using the set for a little while and so far I’ve used all the products three times. And I’ve totally seen a difference in my hair. I can’t tell if my hair really looks thicker, though my waves are much more defined and less frizzy but my hair feels quite a bit thicker. It also feels stronger and a lot healthier, and I thought my hair was pretty healthy before.

I’m going to keep using Fibralogy because I like how it works on my hair and if my hair actually does get thicker with use, then I’ll consider it a bonus. If you have fine, thin hair you might want to give it a try.

L’Oreal Pure Reds Collection Review + Swatches

L’Oreal has been putting out collections from their spokespeople for a while now and I love the idea of them because you can pretty much always find something for your skintone. The latest collection is the Pure Reds and it’s pretty much exactly what I was hoping for, there’s a shade of red for literally anyone. With six lipsticks and their corresponding nail polishes (we got five of them), they’ve got everyone covered.
Doutzen’s Pure Red
Doutzen's Pure Red Lipstick And Polish Swatch
Doutzen’s Pure Red is more of a Tangerine red but it’s actually pretty flattering on me. The nail polish is super sheer, three coats didn’t even begin to cover my nail line so if that’s something that bothers you just skip the polish and go for the lipstick.
JLo’s Pure Red
JLo's Pure Red Lipstick and Nail Polish Swatch
I’m pretty sure JLo’s Pure Reds are going to end up being my favourites. The classic ruby red has a slight blue tinge that I love and they’re so matchy matchy that I kind of love it.
Eva’s Pure Red
Eva's Pure Red Lipstick and Nail Polish Swatch
Eva’s should really be the one I’m drawn to the most but I was clearly having a bad nail polish day because I was just having issues left and right and it had nothing to do with the actual polish. If you like a darker classic red shade, this is the one for you.
Blake’s Pure Red
Blake's Pure Red Lipstick and Nail Polish Swatch
Blake’s Pure Red set made absolutely no sense to me. The lipstick shade is a pure classic cherry red and the polish is more of a vampy purple red. I love both of them so I guess they don’t have to match.
Laetitia’s Pure Red
Laetitia's Pure Red Lipstick and Nail Polish Swatch
I adore Laetitia’s Pure Red. It’s a dark, blood red that’s a little vampy and gothy. You could probably call it oxblood. It’s just so pretty.

L'Oreal Pure Red Lipstick Swatches
L’Oreal Pure Red Lipstick Swatches

I honestly can’t remember if I’ve ever used L’Oreal nail polishes before, I don’t own any so if I have, it wasn’t recently. That’s going to change after using these polishes. With the exception of my Eva bad nail day these polishes were a dream to work with and even though Doutzen’s was really sheer, they’re all really pigmented. They’ve really covered all the bases with these reds so that there’s something for everyone. The hardest part is picking a favourite.

L’Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream

L’Oreal has added something new to the BB Cream landscape with their Magic Skin Beautifier. These BB creams are targeted to specific skin care needs. The cream comes in anti-fatigue and anti-redness versions of the makeup.

As if that wasn’t good enough, these BB creams come in a universal shade that is supposed to transform to your skin tone. They come in green and orange hues that change on your face.

I love these BB creams. They are so light and airy. They never feel heavy on my face. I don’t often need the anti-fatigue cream, but the anti-redness one is perfect for making my skin perfectly even.

There is one slight problem with the creams. They aren’t completely universal in hue. If you have light skin, skip these creams. L’Oreal has made a fair bb cream just for you, because these are not going to get light enough. These bb creams are fairly dark with a bronzed hue. If it wasn’t summer and I didn’t have a tan, these creams might even be the wrong shade for me. Test it out before you buy to make sure that it blends into the right shade for you.

If you are lucky enough to have it work for your skin, enjoy because you are in for a treat!

L’Oreal Colour Riche Wet Quad Eyeshadow

L'Oreal Colour Riche Wet Eyeshadow Quad
I love when eyeshadow shades are sold together, whether it’s a duo, quad or palette. It makes the work of picking shades that go together that much easier. L’Oreal’s new Colour Riche Quads are a little different than the typical drugstore quad. These ones work better when the brush is a little wet, giving you gel eyeshadow feel with the blendability of a powder. It’s really the best of both worlds and they go on gorgeously. They blend really well and if you apply with a wet brush, once they’re dry they last a really long time without fading.
Absolute Taupe
L'Oreal Colour Riche Eyeshadow Quad Absolute Taupe Swatch
Absolute Taupe is a perfect neutral brown quad. The swatch is wet but you can lower the intensity of the shades by applying them dry.
Rose Nude
L'Oreal Colour Riche Eyeshadow Quad Rose Nude Swatch
Rose Nude is by far my favourite, I’ve been using it constantly both wet and dry and the colours are just so pretty.
Incredible Grey
L'Oreal Colour Riche Eyeshadow Quad Incredible Grey Swatch
Incredible Grey is the perfect quad for a traditional smoky eye and once we’re back into fall this is the one I’m going to be reaching for often.
There are eight quads to pick from and L’Oreal has done a great job picking shades that work for everyone. I love the versatility of these and they’ve quickly become a staple in my makeup routine.

L’Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara Review

loreal miss manga

L’Oreal’s new Miss Manga mascara takes inspiration from the over the top lashes of Japanese Manga anime. The pink and black bottle had me hooked at first sight. I needed to try it.

The brush looks interesting, but don’t be intimidated. The wavy bristles appear to be different than other mascaras, but you apply it in the exact same way. The brush has a flexible bend in it. In commercials it looks like it will bend as you apply, but it didn’t bother me. I noticed that because of the different brush, this mascara feels so light going on. You might be tempted to apply more layers. You don’t need to!

miss manga mascara

L’Oreal Miss Manga Mascara lifts and separates my lashes effortlessly. I barely feel like I am applying anything at all. I was born with naturally long lashes, but Miss Manga mascara made them extra long. It was a bit tough to get the outer and inner lashes covered properly with this brush, but I never had to worry about clumping.

My bottom lashes were even more fun. They made my bottom lashes so long. It’s true, I had to clean off some smudging under my eyes. That is a small price to pay for bottom lashes that feel longer than some peoples’ top lashes.

The best part about Miss Manga Mascara is that after it dries it’s not crunchy. My lashes still feel soft and natural. My eyes sometimes get sensitive to mascara after a long day. Miss Manga mascara never irritates my eyes because it doesn’t even feel like I am wearing it. I am hooked!

Coloured Hair Most Wanted

Want to protect your coloured hair in the summer? It seems like everything in the summer from the sun to pools to smog is attacking your hair and making my new colour look dull. Here is what I have been using on my coloured hair to keep it looking great.

framesi shampoo

Framesi Color Lover Shampoo & Conditioner

I had never heard of this salon brand of shampoo and conditioner either, but Framesi gives you a more natural way to care for coloured hair. I’ve been using the Smooth Shine collection and it’s actually making my colour look better than before. I didn’t even know that was possible. I love the list of ingredients that includes quinoa, aloe vera and coconut oil. I wouldn’t eat weird ingredients, so why would I put it on my hair.

precious oils

L’Oreal Paris Precious Oils Color Radiance

You probably already use some kind of oil on your hair either before you wash, after or during styling, but none of them takes care of your colour like this one. L’Oreal’s Color Radiance Oil does the same things as all of those other hair oils, while protecting your colour and making it really pop too. Use it with care to handle frizz without greasy summer locks. Use it with a light hand though because it can go greasy in the summer, so less is more.

marc anthony conditioner

Marc Anthony Miracle Frizz-Smoother Leave-In Conditioner

As a part of the Color Care collection, this spray conditioner gives you amazingly smooth hair. I don’t often blow dry my hair at home, because it’s a pain. If you are like me, use this before you do blow dry because it will ensure that you get sexy smooth hair just like in the salon.

Kevin Murphy Angel Masque

When it’s finally time to pamper your hair, get this deep conditioner. Again, it is very natural with lotus flower, quinoa and bamboo extracts to strengthen your coloured hair. I liked it because it was no fuss and it left my hair feeling soft and strong.
