MAC Eyes On MAC – Navy Times Nine

Eyes On MAC Navy Times Nine Closed
If I had to pick a favourite thing from MAC it would be their eyeshadows, or more specifically their palettes. Unfortunately most of their palettes are limited edition and when they run out it becomes an issue. But now we have Eyes On MAC. These new palettes are part of the permanent line and come in colour families: Navy Times Nine, Amber Times Nine, Burgundy Times Nine, Purple Times Nine, Cool Neutral x 15 and Warm Neutral x 15.

While I’m dying to get my hands on the amber palette, we had a chance to try the Navy and it’s gorgeous. There are subtle shades for daytime and dramatic shades for night and countless combinations in between.

These palettes are so well put together and the quality is exactly what you’d expect from a MAC shadow palette. Great shades, multiple finishes (everything from matte to shimmer) and the pigmentation is fantastic. I had trouble doing swatches because a couple of the shades blended in to my skin a little too well but trust me when I say you want this palette in your life.

MAC Heirloom Mix Holiday 2014 Collection

MAC Heirloom Colour Collection
I can’t count how many MAC holiday sets I’ve bought over the years. My first good set of brushes came from one of those sets and this years Keepsake kits are just as amazing as ever. I’ve never really paid much attention to the individual products you can get though and this year that changes. The Heirloom Mix Colour Collection has everything you want in a makeup collection; shadows, lip products, liners, nail polishes, etc… All in gorgeous, pigmented shades.
Heirloom Mix Pressed Pigment

l-r Noblesse Oblige, Modern Majesty, Enchantment
Until you see these in person you can’t really get a good grasp of how insanely gorgeous these shadows are. They’re super shimmery, really buildable and just perfect for the holiday season. Modern Majesty is a personal favourite with it’s green pearl in a dark brown base.
Heirloom Mix Glitter in Amethyst
MAC Heirloom Mix Glitter Amethyst Open
MAC’s glitters are everything you want in a sparkle for the holiday. Amethyst is a really pretty purple that, well, glitters. It’s really loose and you can apply it anywhere you want to sparkle or add it on top of your shadow for extra shine. It works particularly well with the Enchantment Pressed Pigment.
Heirloom Cremesheen Glass in Courting Chic
MAC Heirloom Mix Cremesheen Glass Courting Chic Open
I’ve never tried Cremesheen Glass before so I was expecting the stickiness of Lipglass. I was so far off base and this might be my new favourite gloss. It’s creamy, non-sticky and you still get that glassy shine that you want. Courting Chic might be the most flattering red gloss I’ve ever tried. It’s more like a sheer red gloss tint with gold shimmer. The second I opened the box, I was blown away by the shade. Putting it on made it even better.

If these are any indication of what I’ve been missing each year by focusing on MAC’s kits, I guess I need to start taking a better look because these are some of my favourite holiday shades all season.

MAC A Novel Romance Collection

MAC A Novel Romance Collection
I’ve been using MAC for over fifteen years but sometimes I forget how much I love it. Until I get a collection like A Novel Romance. I would wear pretty much every shade in the line but the ones that were sent to us just also happened to be the ones I would’ve picked on my own.

MAC A Novel Romance Swatches
Hearts Aflame, Fun Ending, My Fantasy, Fall In Lust, Rising Passions, Dance In The Dark

The A Novel Romance eyeshadow quad is perfect for fall. It consists of My Fantasy (a pale neutral olive pearl), Fall In Lust (midtone grey mauve frost), Rising Passions (greenish charcoal with gold pearl velvet) and Dance In The Dark (matte blackened brown). They all blend really well with each other and are really buildable. The pigmentation is perfect, like most MAC shadows and Dance In The Dark is a great liner shade.

Fun Ending is a soft neutral peach powder blush that went on slightly darker than I was expecting but was also really buildable. Now that whatever colour I had from summer is wearing off, this is definitely going to be a go to blush shade for fall.

Hearts Aflame is a matte midtone brick red lipstick that’s also perfect for fall. It’s a touch darker than what I would normally wear, but it’s super flattering on me, the pigmentation is great and it lasts for hours. This is sold out on the website right now, so you might want to call around to find it.

I really love everything about this collection. All the shades looked amazing, had great pigmentation and is basically everything I’ve come to expect from MAC.

Murdoch Mysteries Georgina Reilly Talks Makeup

British actress Georgina Reilly has gained the hearts of Canadians as Dr. Emily Grace on Murdoch Mysteries. While we wait for the new season to return to television, you can meet Georgina and her cast mates at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto on August 28 – 31. We caught up with the Murdoch Mysteries star to talk about her makeup most wanted.

What is your everyday morning beauty routine like?

I wake up and drink a big glass of water, I wash my face with Oil of Olay foaming wash, it’s simple and not drying. If any makeup is left from the night before I use pure coconut oil to remove it. Then I moisturize with Skin Drink from Pure+Simple. If it is a sunny day I will put on sunscreen before applying my makeup!

pure and simple skin drink

What is your budget friendly beauty secret?

Coconut Oil – I found most eye makeup removers made my eyes sore, but coconut oil takes off anything and gives your eyes moisture too. You can buy a huge jar of it in most health food stores and it lasts forever.

How do you keep your hair looking gorgeous?

A good hair cut. I rarely blow dry my hair. With all the hot rollers and curling irons that are used on the show I try to give my hair a break on my days off. I love MoroccanOil hair treatments every once in a while, but other than that I let it do its thing.

Do you have any products or treatments that you splurge on?

I love to splurge on a good facial and my favourite so far is Pure+Simple’s Super Hydrating Facial, so good for dry skin and they give you an amazing scalp massage and that other type of massage I can never say properly…decolletage!?

What is your latest beauty obsession?

LIPSTICKS. I can’t buy enough of them. I love bright colours. I just bought Heroine by MAC, its a beautiful bright purple.

What are 5 products that are always in your makeup bag and you can’t live without and why?

Lip Balm – my lips tend to get dry/I’m addicted to the taste.
Blush – it always gives you a little brightness when you are running around all day.
Concealer – in case I am a little tired looking that day.
Lipstick I have on that day – bright colours fade easily after eating and drinking so it’s always nice to be able to touch up the colour after.
Sunscreen – stay protected!

MAC Nail Transformations and Lacquer

It’s been a really long time since I’ve used any nail products from MAC so I was really excited when they announced they were releasing a new collection of lacquers with an all new formula and with it six tranformer shades. The new brush makes application really easy and smooth, none of the shades I tried had any streaking and evened out beautifully.
Quiet Time
MAC Quiet Time Swatch
Quiet Time is a straight up beige. And since shades like this are known for streaking, I was pleasantly surprised when it went on completely evenly. I could’ve gotten away with one thin coat but I did two and a topcoat just to make sure. This is one of the best neutrals I’ve used in years.
Midnight Transformer
MAC Quiet Time-Midnight Swatch
Midnight is a sheer black that’s supposed to change the shade of your polish.I tried it on Quiet Time so I could really look for a difference. After three coats of Midnight, Quiet Time changed from a light beige to a mid toned gray-beige.
Sour Cherry
MAC Sour Cherry Swatch
I’m not usually a red nail polish person but this shade is completely gorgeous. It’s a dark berry red and went on like a dream. I’m going to get a lot of wear out of this one.
Liquid Pigment Gold Pearl
MAC Sour Cherry - Gold Pearl Swatch
I tried this Gold Pigment on Sour Cherry and (from bottom to top) did one to three coats to varying results. I loved how two coats changed Sour Cherry and made it golden but you could still see the berry underneath. You definitely have to use Gold Pearl much more sparingly than Midnight.

I’m so completely impressed with the new nail collection from MAC and after seeing all the other shades they’ve brought out I’m going to have a really hard time not buying a ton to add to my collection.

MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection

MAC Alluring Aquatic Review
MAC’s Alluring Aquatic collection is the perfect beachy, summer collection. I’m super fair and bronzer looks awful on me but I love the bronze, glowy look and Alluring Aquatic gives me that without turning me orange, or worse. From the shiny turquoise with water drop effect packaging to the wave pattern on the eyeshadow and blush, the collection just screams beach.

The Lorelei Extra Dimension eyeshadow is a light, shimmery bronze that goes on beautifully and blends well with other shades and Seduced At Sea Extra Dimension Blush is a sheer bronze coral that shows up well on my skin but doesn’t stand out like crazy. My absolute favourite though is the Seducing Sound Lip Glass. It’s a sheer cocoa bronze shade that looks amazing on it’s own and even better with a neutral liner under it. The colour lasts for a pretty long time for a lip gloss and in typical Lip Glass fashion isn’t crazy sticky.

MAC pretty much broke me for other summer makeup with their Alluring Aquatic collection and I’m already wondering if I need to go buy spares in case I run out before the collection leaves stores.

Makeup Most Wanted April 2014: Alyssa’s Picks

I’m the kind of person that sticks to a product until it runs out if I love it but I also change colours and textures with the seasons. These are my Most Wanted products this month.

1. Fresh Peony Brightening UV Shield SPF 50+
This goes on so smoothly and just completely brightens up my face. There’s a tiny little bit of colour to it which makes it seem almost like a CC cream, but luckily it isn’t too dark for my fair skin tone. The high SPF is just a total bonus.

2. Nails Inc. Warwick Way nail polish
This is just the perfect bright turquoise colour for spring. I love the way Nails Inc. nail polishes go on and they last a really long time without chipping.

3. Lise Watier Eden Tropical Palette
More gorgeous spring colours that aren’t too bright or pastel. The pigmentation is fantastic and there are so many combinations you can get out of these 6 shades.

4. Julep Pore-Minimizing Blush in Peach Bellini
I recently got this in my Julep Maven bag and it’s so new it still says coming soon on the Julep site. The second I tried it I fell in love with it. The colour is perfect for my skin and gives me a lot of colour while still looking natural. It’s so pigmented you really only need to use a tiny bit. The jury’s still out on the pore minimizing part though.

5. Soap And Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Crayon in Nudist
This has been with me everywhere I go since the day I got it. I’ve already reviewed these crayons here but this is the standout shade for me. It’s great for when you don’t want to wear a bright lip colour or if your lipstick wears off and you need a quick fix. It’s so moisturizing that I’ve used it as a lip balm.

6. MAC Amplified Lipstick in Red Balloon
This is part of the new MAC Playland collection and even though it’s called Red Balloon, on me it looks more like a reddish pink. Just bright enough but not quite neon. It also lasts forever. This is going to be my go to lipstick for spring and probably summer.
