Lune + Aster Realglow Bronzing Primer Quick Review

I was excited for the idea of a bronzing primer. It would allow me to skip out on multiple face products for just one that gives me a bronzed glow that also moisturizers. Unfortunately this isn’t my dream come true. The Lune + Aster primer is too thick and leaves a weird residue on my face after application that I just couldn’t ignore. The bronzing is also very dark, so be warned if you want to try it. You may not want to apply all over your face. It is better applied in small areas. My hunt for the perfect all in one product continues.

Makeup Hits & Misses

Not every product can be a hit. We hate to call out the misses, but sometimes we have to call it like we see it. Here are some recent makeup hits and misses from our favourite brands.

sephora-collection-cushion-glossy-eyeliner

HIT – Sephora Collection Cushion Glossy Eyeliner – I’m not really into liquid liner. I don’t have time for the hassle of it. I expected this cushion eyeliner to be similar. It’s not. Just because you don’t have a steady hand for liquid liner doesn’t mean you should count this out. I found that using the brush was a bit steadier than a pencil. The eyeliner itself isn’t a runny as normal liquid liners. You should still be ready in case you need to do touch ups. The finish is stunning. It’s way better than any pencil!

essence-say-to-imperfections-concealer

MISS – Essence Say To Imperfections Concealer – All I ask of my concealer is that it’s no fuss. I don’t want to have to fight with it to stay on or cover everything it needs to. This essence concealer is far from perfect. There have been some days when I’ve had to fight with it. It’s also really affordable and easy to take on-the-go when necessary.

anastasia-beverly-hills-brow-wiz

HIT – Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz – This is going to sound crazy, but this product made me wish that I had problem brows. I have pretty standard brows. I can fill them in a bit and do a little maintenance, but I don’t have to worry about drawing them in or regular waxing. I am usually happy about that, but Anastasia’s Brow Wiz pencil worked so well, I wanted more of an excuse to use it. This pencil looks so natural and real. It must be good if I am wishing away my normal brows.

burts-bees-bb-cream

MISS – Burt’s Bees BB Cream – I hate to come down on brands that I love, but Burt’s Bees has disappointed me with their BB Cream. My first issue is the smell. It smells a bit like lemons. It’s really strange. Next, the cream always separates in the bottle. No matter how many times I use it or shake it, I always get this weird runny liquid the first time I squeeze it. I have to squeeze it a second time to get the product mixed. Finally after all of that, the coverage of this cream isn’t strong enough to make it worth it. If it gave me great coverage I would be happy to forget those other issues, but the way it sits now I can’t.

annabelle-lash-launcher-mascara

HIT – Annabelle Lash Launcher Mascara – This is really the little mascara that could. I wasn’t excited to try it at all. The first time that I used it, I blew it off as bad without even noticing it. Slowly, day after day, I found myself reaching for the Annabelle mascara more and more. Unlike some other mascaras that I’ve been using lately, this one keeps my lashes looking soft and natural. it has one row of longer bristles that are perfect for making my lashes look extra long. Serves me right for ignoring this little red bottle.

estee-lauder-double-wear-nude-cushion-stick-radiant-makeup

SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN – Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick Radiant Makeup – This stick is a great new innovative way to think of foundation. This foundation is all in one stick with a pad on the end to make applying even easier. Let me start by saying that I really like the foundation. It’s just thick enough to fill any fine lines, but not feel too cakey. It dries quickly without any moisture, so my face looks great. It’s the applicator that I’m not crazy about. I don’t feel like I have enough spreading control by using the pad. Once it’s been used, it feels a bit dirty and I would rather use a foundation brush or my finger to spread it around. That is just me being picky though, because the makeup inside is great!

Gosh Contour’N Strobe Kit

gosh-contour-kit

I like the idea of these contour kits that give you all the powders that you need in one place, but Gosh is joining my contour game pretty late. I have spent the past year trying contour kits from every other brand and I only just got the Gosh palette now. Trying to get me to change my favourites at this point is a challenge.

The first thing that I notice is that the colours in this palette all seem to have a bit of a golden sparkle. Luckily for me, that tone suits me, but be careful if gold isn’t your colour. Even though gold suits me, I don’t always want to sparkle. That kept me away from this makeup kit more than anything else.

I want to contour, but not to sparkle. The powders themselves are ok. The darker contouring powder was too dark for me, so I was thankful for two options.

The blush and the highlighter gave me the glow I expected. Overall this palette was ok, but as I said it’s coming last in the contour trend and I already have my makeup bag favourites set. If it isn’t offering me something new, I don’t know why I would replace it.

Spring Face Makeup Most Wanted

My face has had a rough spring. It was dry, had break-outs, was irritated and generally just out of control. Luckily no one else could tell because I have been using these secret weapons.

Nanoblur Instant Skin Finisher
Nanoblur
Sometimes you just find a product that works so well, you don’t have much to say about it. This is one of those products. I love it, because I forget I’m wearing it. I have said goodbye to shiny skin, fine lines, wrinkles, pores and all of those other imperfections on my face. It’s just nanoblur from here on. When I wear it under one of my new favourite primers, I almost believe that I have perfect skin. I will keep this secret to myself though.

Shiseido Synchro Skin Foundation
Shiseido Synchro Skin Foundation
Life doesn’t get more luxurious than when you are wearing Shiseido Foundation. It melts into your skin like butter. You don’t even remember that you are wearing makeup. Get colour matched if you can, because if you find the right shade, it completely disappears leaving only perfect skin behind. What more can I say? You have to see it to believe it.

Flower Erase Everything Foundation
flower erase everything foundation
I’ve been on the hunt for a lighter foundation this season and I think that I might have found it. Flower has created a foundation that is really soft and light, while also being matte. I like that it’s silky without making my skin shiny. If you are looking for something heavy duty, look elsewhere. This foundation still covers blemishes and imperfections, but not in a way that you can feel on your skin. It leaves my skin feeling even better than natural.

Maybelline Master Contour Face Contouring Kit
maybelline master face contour
Take the guesswork out of contouring with this easy to use palette. This handy little kit includes three labeled powders showing which powder is used for contouring, blush, and highlighting. Check out the back for an easy to follow guide that show how to use the powders. My favourite part about this set is how subtle the powders are. There is no need to worry about getting streaks of colour. Everything is subtle enough for even a contouring novice!

NYC Get It All Foundation
nyc get it all foundation
Until this week, I would never had replaced my liquid foundation for a stick, but NYC may have made me a convert. This stick gives a nice matte finish that I can use wherever I want. I like that flexibility. This foundation makes me feel like I have a little more freedom. I don’t have to cover my face with makeup. It blends really nicely too, so I’m never stuck with weird lines. I also love how convenient it is! I can throw it in my purse or even my carry on.

Spring Makeup Brushes & Tools Most Wanted

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that your brushes and makeup tools are just as important as the actual makeup you buy. This season, I did a little spring cleaning and updated my brush collection with some new winners.

Sephora Tough As Nails

Sephora Tough As Nails – This is the most bad ass nail set I have ever seen. The second I saw it, I knew I wanted it. The square case had a faux leather, black patent finish and industrial zipper that makes it look so cool to hold. I wish this was a clutch. The tools inside are just as tough. There are 7 tools inside that can transform even the roughest and toughest nails. They aren’t going to crack under pressure. When you hold them in your hands, you can feel that these are heavy duty. Since my boyfriend often steals my nail clippers, I appreciate that now I have a pair strong enough for a man too.

Tweezerman Mini Face Contour Brush Set

Tweezerman Mini Face Contour Brush Set – Since contouring is no longer just for makeup artists and beauty pros, it’s time we all fully understood the proper brushes to use. This set has so many functions. Since I am heading out on a trip soon, all I can think is that it’s ideal for travel. The mini-size and bonus beauty blender are perfect for taking on-the-go. It’s also great for giving you options for face brushes, so that you can test out a few varieties. The flat and pointed brushes, plus the blender, help someone not as familiar with brushes understand the different types. If it was the holidays I would even call this a perfect stocking stuffer. Hopefully, these little sets stay around for a while.

wacoal brush set

Wacoal 30 Years Of Beauty Brush Set – This little set is so luxurious feeling, no one will believe that it came from a lingerie store. The brushes are so soft and fluffy. All I wanted to do the second I got them was brush light powder all over my face. They are also a nice weight, not too light or heavy. The black container is perfect for giving the brushes that luxe feel. You will love the ritual of unwrapping them and putting them away.

Shiseido Perfect Foundation Brush

Shiseido Perfect Foundation Brush – Calling a brush perfect is daring, but when you have foundation like Shiseido does, you don’t need much to make it feel perfect. Shiseido’s little foundation brush is different from a lot of other brushes that I have used. It makes me feel like I am moving up to the next level of makeup brushes. The short bristles are soft, but not too flexible making it easier to spread cream foundations. I am usually not partial to mini-brushes at home, but in this case I feel like I have more control with this brush.

SST Power Stay Makeup Sticks

SST Powerplay Powerstay Collection

If you need a little on the go touch up, try Canadian made SST Power Stay makeup sticks. SST has a stick that you can throw in your purse for anything you might need. They have the perfect combination of qualities being long lasting, waterproof, and highly pigmented.

The Power Stay line includes two lipsticks, one eye shadow, one highlighting stick, and a brow pencil. All of these makeup sticks have some serious colour and staying power, so apply with a light hand because they aren’t as easy to smudge as you might think. The shadow is especially tricky because the long lasting formula doesn’t have much give.

These SST sticks are perfect for travel. I love how they give big power in a small package. I can bring along everything I need to go from day to night in the bottom of my purse. Forget carrying around big heavy makeup bags. That is a thing of the past!

Of all of them, my favourite is the Highlighting Stick. It’s great to apply under your brows or on your cheekbones for a bit of shine.

I can’t wait until they have more colours of shadow and lipstick to give more diversity too.

Essence Cosmetics Make Up Boxes

Essence Cosmetics has been quickly pulling ahead of the pack in Canada as the best makeup brand for girls who are new to makeup. With these new makeup boxes they are setting themselves even further apart from other brands. Essence has developed makeup boxes for a variety of different parts of your everyday makeup routine. I tried the How to make Brows Wow box and the How to make Smokey Eyes box.

Both boxes contain everything you will need to get the look they are promising including small brushes, tweezers and step-by-step tutorials. It’s perfect for anyone who’s unsure of themselves when it comes to makeup.

The brows box has a few different colours of powder, so you can match your hair colour. The step-by-step is crucial for anyone who has never shaped their own brows. It’s great to get tips to ensure that you do it right.

The Smokey Eye box has six sparkling eye shadows to get not just a regular smokey eye, but a glammed up version. Again, there is a step-by-step tutorial for newbies. Since how to do a smokey eye is probably one of the most google makeup searches of all time, we know there are lots of people out there who could use this reminder.

Overall these little makeup boxes are a great idea. We hope that essence keeps on developing these kits for all of the makeup newbies out there.

Vapour Organic Beauty

Vapour Organic Beauty is the child of Krysia Boinis and Kristine Keheley who worked on other brands creating products and wanted to develop their own line of organic products. They worked to create healthy products that also had great performance and were sustainable. That is a lot to ask if you also want the products to work great.

Vapour Beauty created products that are all a minimum of 70% organic without the use of harmful chemicals. I was really impressed when I received Vapour’s makeup because they aren’t just organic, but they are also innovative. They are doing more than just making organic makeup. They are developing new products.

vapour-stratus-skin-perfector

My favourite product in the line was the Stratus Instant Skin Perfector. I’ve never used something like this. The closest I could compare it to is a primer. It works great as a primer under your foundation, but you don’t need to. The Skin Perfector hide pores, helps with any discolouration and mattifies your skin, while keeping it radiant. All while being good for your skin. Talk about multi-purpose! I found on my skin it even gave me a nice shimmer in the light. It’s great for people who don’t want to wear a lot of makeup.

vapour-Siren-lipstick

My other favourite product is the Siren Lipstick. I have a love/hate relationship with organic lipstick. I find they are either great or horrible. This one is on the great side. I’m not much of a dark lipstick girl, but I was totally addicted to the dark plum Torrid shade. It was rich, creamy, sexy and stayed on for a long time.

If you are looking for something natural and organic that actually works, check out Vapour Beauty!

Jeanne Beker’s Makeup Most Wanted

TSC Jeanne Beker

It doesn’t get much more on trend in Canada than the legendary Jeanne Beker. Most girls’ first memories of see the latest runway trends start and end with Jeanne Beker hosting Fashion Television as a kid. Beker has a new title as the Style Editor for The Shopping Channel and tonight she kicks off her new live show, Style Matters with Jeanne Beker. Makeup Most Wanted spoke to Jeanne to get her makeup memories and her secret tricks.

What is your first makeup or beauty related memory?

I remember rummaging through my mom’s drawer as a little kid and finding these weird little clear plastic stencils that she’d send away for – stencils to help you draw your eyebrows on!  I must have only been about three or four, but I was mesmerized by them. I think there were a couple of plastic lip stencils too. Whew! Talk about a painted lady look! I also fondly remember wearing three pairs of false eyelashes to my Sweet 16! (Two on the top, one on the bottom…) That’s not a “first” makeup memory, but it certainly is a fun one. It was also the first time I ever wore lashes, so it was all very exciting.

What is your everyday morning beauty routine like?

I wash my face with an exfoliating mask most mornings, and then put on moisturizing cream, followed by a CC cream that gives great coverage, and then my liquid foundation. If I’m not going on camera, or anywhere that I have to get dolled up for, I’ll simply use a tinted moisturizer.  Then, a little liquid or cake eyeliner, pencil in the eyebrows, some mascara, a little blush on the cheekbones, and top it off with lipstick and I’m good to go!  I also use lots of body lotion and/or oil right after my bath. And I wash my hair at least every other day… but usually EVERY day, since I always seem to be going somewhere where I want to look my best!

What will you never leave the house without wearing or applying?

Usually black eyeliner. I’ve been wearing it since the ‘60s, and feel rather naked without it!

What is your budget friendly beauty secret?

My good cheap nail salon is often my life-saver. I abhor ratty nails! I go to my favourite nail salon at least once a week, but likely wouldn’t go that often if it was an expensive manicurist.

Do you have any tricks that you have learned from behind the scenes at fashion weeks?

Takes lots of deep breaths, and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!!!!

logo rapunzel hair

How do you keep your hair looking gorgeous?

I use great products – NEVER cheap out on hair products – and I visit my colourist VERY regularly (about every two weeks because my hair grows fast!). I also regularly have it trimmed, and always carry a little brush or comb with me to keep it sleek. I’ve been going to the same fabulous hairdresser since 1979! I kid you not! His name is Gregory Parvatan, and he works out of Rapunzel.

AERIN_Fragrance_Coffret

Do you have a signature scent? What is it and how did you fall in love with it?

I used to, but lately have been experimenting with new ones.  I love what Aerin Lauder does.  I used to wear her “Private Collection” religiously, but now have been playing with some of her newer scents. She has a whole collection of little bottles that come in a lovely gift box, and I love just about all of them. Variety is the spice of life these days!

Do you have any products or treatments that you splurge on?

I do like a great massage every once in a while. I don’t go for facials nearly enough – just don’t have the time! – but sure would if I could.

Style Matters with Jeanne Beker premieres with a special two-hour show on Thursday, March 12 at 8 p.m. ET on The Shopping Channel. You don’t want to miss it because we are sure that she has some great picks ready! February Makeup Most Wanted

makeup most wanted february

It’s been a cold, cold month here in Toronto! See what has been getting me through this month:

The Body Shop Sweet Almond Oil Nail Polish Remover

I heard that this nail polish remover smelled really, really bad. It does. It’s true! Don’t blow it off because of that. This nail polish remover does so much more good than just smelling bad in the bottle. Yes, it removes nail polish. It also moisturizes my cuticles and makes my nails and skin feel so soft. Also, once it dries it smells really nice. You just need to get past that first bad smell.

Estee Lauder Little Black Primer

You know how sometimes you are heading out to the grocery store and you don’t want to look like you are wearing makeup, but at the same time you don’t want to leave the house without mascara? This is the mascara for those times. It gives your lashes a nice natural dark coat. I am kind of addicted to wearing it on the weekends when I’m running errands. You can also wear it as a primer to help thicken your other mascara.

Demeter First Love Fragrance

Want to know what your first love smells like? This sweet fragrance smells like jasmine, honeysuckle, rose, lotus and lemon zest. It’s refreshing and light and sweet. It really is the sweet smell of childhood love and romance.

Guerlain Baby Glow Makeup

I’m usually all about heavy foundation that gives me flawless covered skin, but this light makeup makes my skin feel so pretty I can’t help but fall in love. This makeup is soft and lets my skin’s own beauty shine though. It helps my face look fresh even in the morning. It must be that baby glow that has me feeling and looking so good.

NYC Expert Last Lipstick

I’ve been getting ready for warm weather with these bright spring colours of NYC’s lipstick. The colour is even bolder than you will see in the tube. It’s opaque and gives a rich hue on my lips. I love that I can wear just a bit for a light colour or layer it on for something strong. It’s thick, so it takes a bit to spread it out, but it looks great for hours. For a note, Creamy Mauve has been my favourite colour.
