Most Wanted Summer Mascara

If I could wear one makeup product for the rest of my life, it would be mascara. A bunch of new ones for summer? Yes please! I constantly change my mascara based on my mood or look I want to go for. These four have been in a pretty heavy rotation lately.

Cover Girl Total Tease Mascara

I’m personally not a fan of Cover Girl mascara in general. I like a big fibre brush and theirs are usually hard plastic which hurts my eyes. Total Tease does have a hard, plastic brush but it doesn’t bother me as much. That said, there’s a serious learning curve to using this interesting wand. Once I got the hang of it, I was rewarded with a ton of length and nicely separated lashes. The little comb helped me get every tiny lash. I found Total Tease way a lot easier to remove than other Cover Girl mascaras.

Revlon Mega Multiplier Mascara

Again, my issue with Revlon mascaras was similar to my Cover Girl problem. But Mega Multiplier completely blew me away. Mega is actually a good word for the results I got. The brush gave me massive volume and length and the formula forms little tubes around each lash so there’s no flaking to worry about. Seriously, I feel asleep with this one and woke up to perfect mascara. I have a feeling I’ll be replacing this one when I run out.

MAC Bold & Bad Lash Mascara

If you’ve used MAC’s Haute & Naughty mascara in the past, you know they love to shove brushes in other brushes and give you a ton of lash options. Bad & Bold is a little different in that there’s not only two brushes but also two formulas. The big brush gives you major volume (no clumps!) and the smaller brush is supposed to give you smudge-proof definition to your bottom lashes. I don’t put mascara on my bottom lashes so I use the smaller brush to get all the little lashes on top and to comb through. The results I get are pretty close to fake lashes.

L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara

Of all the mascaras I’ve tried recently, Lash Paradise is hands down my ideal brush. It’s big, it’s fluffy and it gets my lashes huge. It also fills in the little eyelash gaps on my left eye without looking like I have an eyeliner smudge. I don’t have a ton of experience with L’Oreal mascaras but if Lash Paradise is any indication, I can see why they’re so popular.

Essence Forbidden Volume False Lash Mascara Topcoat

Let me tell you a tale of this little Essence mascara: The Forbidden Volume Mascara. This review started out very differently.

I received this essence product in a bag full of eye makeup for a glam night out. It had silver eyeliner and liquid liner. Everything a girl could ever want for serious drama. That’s why I was so surprised when I applied this to my lashes. There was no drama here. My lashes looked weak.

I downgraded this to a day product, but still wasn’t thrilled. After 2 or 3 coats, it would work as my office makeup look, but I don’t like having to work so hard for this.

I used this mascara for weeks. For some reason I wasn’t willing to give up on it. The colour was great on my eyes. I liked that it wasn’t waterproof, but stayed put. It came off easily at the end of the day. It never irritated my eyes. It was a bit clumpy sometimes, but I could usually clean the wand to fix it.

Finally it came time to write this review. I brought the Essence mascara to my computer. I started writing. I wanted to make sure that I got the name correct, so I looked at the package. Essence Forbidden Volume False Lash Mascara Topcoat. Wait a minute! Topcoat? I had no idea it was a topcoat. The instructions on the side of the bottle say to apply it over your favourite mascara.

You mean this is to enhance your favourite mascara? I was never supposed to wear this alone! This changes everything. As a top coat, this essence mascara is perfect to add thickness and colour to your lashes. As a bonus, you can also wear it as your daytime mascara in a pinch. 😉

Maybelline Spring 2017 Most Wanted

We’re halfway through spring and I’m just getting into the lighter makeup that’ll continue into summer. Maybelline has released a bunch of new products in the past few months that are perfect for getting an easy spring look.

Dream Cushion Fresh Face Liquid Foundation On-The-Go

This easy to carry compact was much more than I was expecting. It gives a medium-to-full coverage when I was expecting more of a sheer one. Because the Ivory shade is a touch too dark for me in the winter, it’s only now that I can get a lot of use out of it. It’s extremely easy to apply and keep in your purse for touchups but if you have a shine issue, you’re definitely going to want to keep a powder on hand with you. This is definitely not mattifying but it also doesn’t dry out my skin and it’s really comfortable to wear.

FaceStudio Master Blush Color & Highlight Kit

Contouring and I don’t get along, but give me a blush and I’m happy. This blush palette is definitely my happy place. With four blushes (one that can also be used as a highlighter), you get a ton of options. You can use each blush separately, or mix them up to make a new colour. The darkest shade is way too dark for me but I’ve been playing around with the other three a ton. I love how bright the shades are and the pigmentation is great. You don’t need a lot to get good colour.

Color Sensational Shaping Lipliner in Pink Coral

I haven’t been using a lot of lipliner in the past couple years but this colour is basically what I’ve been wearing for the past month lipstick-wise and this shaping lipliner is so easy to use. Since it’s a twist up, you don’t need to worry about sharpening and it’s precise tip gives you a ton of control. Don’t feel like going the whole lipstick route? Just add a lip balm on top of this.

Volum’ Express The Colossal Big Shot Mascara

Do you see that brush? It’s massive! Maybelline mascara has been my go-to since high school, I love nearly all of them and the Colossal Big Shot is right in there. The huge, soft brush gives you a ton of volume and some length and when I layer it with another Maybelline mascara for extra drama, it plays well with others. I find this one just slightly not dark enough for me for night time but during the day, it’s perfect.

The 24K Nudes Eyeshadow Palette

This was the only palette that came on vacation with me last month and within the twelve shades, there’s a colour for every look you want. It’s not the most pigmented palette I’ve ever used but it’s really soft and buildable, plus there’s very little fallout. It includes a little foam eyeshadow brush but I use my brushes instead. This is a great palette if you want pretty nude shades but don’t want to spend a fortune.

I’ve used all of these for a good number of looks without any extra products, which makes them perfect for spring makeup in a hurry.

Makeup Most Wanted November 2016: Alyssa’s Picks

I can’t believe it’s already the end of November; it feels like it was just summer and now we’re working on holiday posts. These are my favourite things from the past few months.

Korres Golden Krocus Ageless Saffron Elixir
korres-golden-krocus-ageless-saffron-elixir
Right now my anti-aging needs are mostly preventative but considering I’m a skin care junkie, I love to try new products. Boosters seem to be the new serums lately and I’m seeing them everywhere so I’ve tried a couple. Korres has my favourite of them so far. The Golden Krocus Elixir is pretty delightful. I love everything from the packaging, to the texture, to the slightly spicy scent. Made with Greek Saffron, you really only need a drop or two of this booster to get results. Now obviously I’m not looking for major results in wrinkles in my skin because I don’t have any; but my skin looks brighter, feels smoother and really just glows. It’s so light that it absorbs within seconds and you follow it up with whatever serums and moisturizers you’d normally use. It really feels amazing. I love the scent so much, I’ve been reaching for my unscented options.

Clinique Lash Power Flutter-To-Full Mascara
clinique-lash-power-flutter-to-full-mascara
I have so much mascara that I actually have trouble on a regular basis deciding which one to use but I’ve been using this one for months and absolutely love it. I generally like Clinique’s mascaras but they all seem to serve only one purpose. I have one for volume and one for length but Flutter-To-Full is kind of a three-in-one. There’s a dial with three options that let’s you control how much intensity you get. The lowest form gives you a barely there, natural look. The next one amps it up a bit but still stays fairly natural and the third gives you major night look drama. I tend to always use the third option because I love big lashes but I appreciate the options. It also stays on forever without smudging or flaking. Clinique says 24 hours and I totally agree with that. They also say it comes off with warm water and I would like to disagree, I have the hardest time getting this one off but that also means I can trust it not to disappear on me.

Sephora Collection Double Time Double Ended Brush Set
sephora-double-time-brush-set
I think one of the most underrated things about Sephora is their variety of Sephora brand brush sets. There’s something for every need and every budget and while they’re not always the highest quality, they usually do a decent job. I really love this Double Time set because each brush is double ended, so you get twelve travel brushes that look like six full size ones and handle like full size. This is a great set for travel because you have every brush you could need in one place and the faux leather is super soft and durable; just like the brushes themselves.

Avon Skin So Soft Winter Soft Nourishing Hand Cream
avon-skin-so-soft-winter-soft-nourishing-hand-cream
I think one of the first hand creams I ever used was from Avon (my mom sold it when I was in high school) and it’s really nice to know that it still works as well as I remember. I’m so picky about hand cream and this one works quite nicely. It goes on smoothly, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave my hands feeling greasy. It has Shea Butter, Babassu Oil and Vitamin E to soften and hydrate your hands. While it doesn’t last 24 hours for me like it claims, I only have to use it a couple times a day and my hands don’t feel dried out.

Maybelline The Loaded Bolds in Gone Greige
maybelline-loaded-bolds-gone-greige

As much as I love a matte liquid lipstick, the winter dryness isn’t really letting me use them as much as I did in the summer, so I’m back to a creamier, more traditional lipstick. Maybelline’s The Loaded Bolds aren’t really a typical lipstick. They’re matte but they’re also extremely hydrating and comfortable. I keep forgetting that I’m wearing them because they feel like lip balm. The shades are also incredibly pigmented. One swipe and I have full coverage and zero patchiness. But it’s my favourite shade that surprises me the most. Greige anything doesn’t look good on me, it really washes me out and makes my skin, well, grey. I tried Gone Greige because I really wanted to love it. It’s such a 90’s inspired shade and I am a 90’s kid. So I was completely shocked when the grey-ish brown actually looked good on me. I hope they end up releasing more shades, because ten just doesn’t seem enough. At least I have a winter lipstick that I’ll be using a lot. And it’s not red.

Fiona Stiles Beauty Most Wanted

Fiona Stiles Most Wanted
Fiona Stiles is a pretty well known celebrity makeup artist and this year she launched her eponymous makeup line. We got to try some of the products and these three really popped out for me. The hashtag that goes along with Fiona Stiles Beauty is #mistakefreemakeup and with these products, it’s definitely true. All three are extremely easy to use and very hard to mess up.
Ultimate Lash Icon Volumizing Mascara in Carbon Canyon
Fiona Stiles Ultimate Lash Icon
My biggest pet peeve with mascara is when they claim to give you tons of volume but it’s not dark enough to actually see it. With this mascara not only do I get a lot of volume but Carbon Canyon is super black, so I can definitely see it. I can get my lashes pretty big with Ultimate Lash Icon without getting clumpy. I do notice it can flake a little, but not enough that it makes a huge difference to me.
Soft Cheek Veil in Maiden Lane
Fiona Stiles Soft Cheek Veil Maiden Lane
Next to mascara, blush is my favourite type of makeup. I love when a blush is really pigmented going on and settles down the longer I wear it. This does exactly that. If I feel like the colour is too strong when I apply it, I just wait a minute and let it blend in and it ends up perfect. Maiden Lane is a really pretty neutral pink that leans a little peachy on me. I also appreciate that for a powder blush, it’s not super chalky.
Color Impact Satin Lip Crayon in Hester and Bonnie Brae
Fiona Stiles Color Impact Satin Lip Crayon
I might have been wearing matte liquid lipstick all summer but sometimes my lips need a break and I still want some easy colour on them. These lip crayons are perfect for that. Hester is a nude pink and Bonnie Brae is burgundy, both are extremely creamy and pigmented. These crayons feel substantial on your lips while they’re not great for colour transfer, unless you’re eating or drinking a lot they’ll last a decent amount of time. I’ve been wearing Hester quite a bit lately and will probably reach for Bonnie Brae more in the fall. These crayons also come in matte shades as well.

Flower Outstretched Lengthening Mascara

flower mascara before

Before – I don’t know why my eyes are different sizes!

Make way for this new mascara that I am in love with! The brush looks weird, but just go with it. The longer brush side is for helping to lengthen and curl those lashes. I was as skeptical as you are. It really works though. For someone like me, who refuses to use an eyelash curler, this is the best product I can dream up. Then I just have to spin the wand around to add the dark black mascara. The formula is a bit thick, so you do need to be careful to avoid big clumps. Otherwise though, my lashes have looked amazing lately. The bonus is that Flower is also so affordable, so I don’t have to break the bank to look this good!

After – Boom! Look at that length!

Essence Cosmetics Summer Makeup

With all of the expensive makeup on the market, sometimes it’s nice to play with colours that are affordable. I played with some of the new hues and products in the essence summer makeup collection:

3D Eyeshadow – If you’re anything like me, you are going to love these eyeshadows at first glance. What’s not to love? Each little container has two complimentary colours of eye shadow in a pretty wavy design. All of the colours have a hint of a metallic sheen to them. You will notice that when you apply them, it’s best to either use a wet brush or be prepared to layer. This shadow is so light. It makes it easy for playing around, but frustrating if you know what you are looking for and just want the colour to appear.

Lash Princess Volume Mascara – This pretty and curvy mascara is a great affordable option. The curvy brush is reminiscent of many other expensive mascaras, but for a fraction of the cost. The curves in the wand help you to get at smaller lashes.

Long Lasting Lipstick – Brighten up your lips for under $5 with this lipstick. I got hooked on the matte red to bring the glam!

2 In 1 Eyeliner Pen – This eyeliner is great because of how versatile it is. Take two of your favourite eyeliner pens and put them together to get this one product. The 2-In-1 Eyeliner Pen from essence has a marker at both ends in the same rich black. One is thin for getting a close tight line around your lids. The other end is XXL with a thick pen to get sexy cat’s eyes for a night on the town.

Spring ’15 Most Wanted Luxe Mascara

Spring '15 Most Wanted Luxe Mascara
We’ve had a chance to try out a ton of new mascaras lately. So many in fact that we had so much trouble narrowing down our favourites that we had to split them into drugstore and luxe categories.

Guerlain Cils D’Enfer So Volume Mascara
Guerlain Cils D'Enfer So Volume Mascara
This mascara is super volumizing without being clumpy. My lashes are a pretty decent length on their own but need help in the volume department and this definitely delivers. It doesn’t hurt that it smells amazing. And unlike typical round mascara tubes, this one is a perfect rectangular pocket size that fits into places better.
Benefit Roller Lash Mascara
Benefit Roller Lash Mascara
If you’re scared of eyelash curler or know someone who is, Roller Lash is the next best thing. It literally curls every lash and gives great length at the same time. If you’re looking for more volume though, you probably want to use a coat of this and then add your favourite volumizing mascara on top.
Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch Lengthening and Defining Mascara
Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch Lengthening & Defining Mascara
Smoky Stretch really gives you some serious length but doesn’t clump at all. It’s quickly become my favourite daytime mascara and I love that my eyelashes look super long and defined but subtle at the same time.
Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils
Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effect Faux Cils
I can’t say enough about this mascara. You want volume? You’ve got it. This mascara is supposed to make your lashes look like you’re wearing falsies and it really does. This is literally everything I want in a mascara. This YSL classic mascara has been reformulated for it’s 15th anniversary and comes in six shades. It might be on the pricier side of mascaras but considering how well it works, I’d say it’s worth the money.
Too Faced Better Than False Lashes Extreme!
Too Faced Better Than False Lashes Extreme!
If you want to really go all out with your lashes but can’t get a handle on fake lash strips, you need to try this set. First you use the gold tubed primer. Then you follow up with two coats of the white lash extension fibres and finish off with another coat of primer. You end up with seriously major lashes. Calling it extreme isn’t an understatement. And for a night out when I want up up my lash game and don’t want to deal with fake eyelashes, this is what I reach for.

Rodial Makeup Collection

rodial-makeup-collection copy

I’ve loved Rodial skincare since the first time I tried it. You cannot imagine the joy within me when I heard they were developing a full makeup line. The Rodial line is no nonsense. It’s been edited and paired down to only offer you the sensible colours and products that you actually need. It’s not fancy with lots of sparkle and flash. Here are some of the most exciting products in the line:

rodial-eye-scuplt

Eye Sculpt – This is their eye shadow. It only comes in one colour. That’s right, just one colour. That colour is brown. It’s a shadow that is perfect for layering. Start with just a tint of this mousse eye shadow for a day look. Layer it on for a look that is much more dramatic. While big palettes are fun, I love how simple they have made this!

rodial-mascara

Glamolash Mascara XXL – Drama! Drama! Drama! This mascara is all about drama! This is Rodial’s night time mascara. The have a skinny mascara that is for the day, but I love super long bold lashes. I have to say though, the first time I put this on, I wondered if this mascara was too much for work. I’ve never thought of that before. This is what mascara should be all about!

rodial glamstick

Glamstick – This is the one place where Rodial does offer a lot of colour options. Their glamsticks offer light colour with maximum moisturizer. Everyone who has ever worried about dry lips should get a glamstick because they are perfect for repairing the moisture.

instaglam-highlighter

Instaglam Highlighter – This season is all about contouring and highlighting and this is one of our favourites. This highlighter is very light, so that you can get just a touch of reflective shimmer in the light. You can start light and then add more and more. You can even use it on new places, like on top of your shadow to get that wet eye shadow look.

Cover Girl Spring ’15 Most Wanted

Cover Girl Spring '15 Most Wanted
Cover Girl has a whole lot of new products out just in time for spring. So much in fact, we could hardly fit it all into one post, so these are our Most Wanted picks for Spring.
Full Lash Bloom Mascara in Very Black
Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom Mascara
It’s rare that a mascara lives up to its hype but this one does. You get length, volume and it feels like you’re not wearing mascara. I’ve rubbed my eyes a few times while wearing it and there was no stiffness whatsoever, but it also stayed on. And the shade is exactly as black as I want it.
Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Polish in Fuchsia Flame
Cover Girl Fuchsia Flame Swatch
I haven’t used a lot of Cover Girl nail polish in the past but it was so easy to work with that I’m sure I’ll be using a lot more in the future. Two coats of Fuchsia Flame gave me full coverage and the colour is gorgeous! I wore it for three days with no tip wear or chips.
Eyeshadow Quads in Blooming Blushes, Va-Va Violets and Notice Me Nudes
Cover Girl Bloom Shadow Quads
Honestly, all these eyeshadow quads are gorgeous. They go on really nicely and blend well and last a pretty good amount of time but these three really screamed spring to me.
Colorlicious Lipstick in Enchantress Blush, Champagne and Euphoria
Cover Girl Colorlicious Lipstick Swatches
These lipsticks are extremely creamy and might not last 24 hours but at least a couple. They’re also really comfortable to wear. Enchantress Blush and Champagne are great daytime shades, while Euphoria is perfect for a night out.
