Where did September go? No really, I swear yesterday was August and I couldn’t wait for fall. At least it’s mostly here now and I can cool off a bit. While we work on our fall posts, here’s what I used the most last month.
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Balm
I’ve been using this solid cleanser non-stop since I got it. It starts off as a solid balm that you rub into dry skin and as you add water it turns into a cleansing milk. It’s so gentle and seriously effective that I’ve been using it on my eyes without a problem and it’s great for when I’m swatching, especially tough lipsticks and waterproof eyeliners. Also, it smells really good.
GROOM Hair Pomade
We have a lot of stuff coming up about Montreal based Les Industries GROOM but we’re starting off with the Hair Pomade. This is a men’s grooming line, so I didn’t try it personally but I had a friend test it out and he was super impressed. These are his thoughts (made a little more readable by me). ‘The pomade has a little bit of grit to it which makes it easy to work with and it wasn’t greasy. You only have to use a little bit of it and it’ll last a long time and it has really good hold, almost too good. Your hair isn’t going anywhere.’ He loves the smell of it, I love the smell of it and I can see girls with short hair using this one along with the guys it’s aimed at.
Algenist REVEAL Concentrated Color Correcting Drops in Green
I can’t count how many green products I’ve used to neutralize the redness in my skin and most things just do an ok job. I had a Sephora makeup artist use this on me when she was doing my makeup for a wedding and I bought it instantly. It literally gets rid of every tiny bit of redness that I want to hide. I use a drop (just one!) in my moisturizer before I put my makeup on or whenever I want to look less red. You can also add it to foundation, primer or even on it’s own. The drops also come in blue, pink and apricot for different issues. This is the first time I’ve used anything by Algenist and if all their products work as well as these drops, I need to get my hands on more.
Live Clean Vanilla Oatmeal Soothing Liquid Hand Soap
I’ve been using Live Clean’s Liquid Hand Soap almost exclusively for over a year. It’s a little creamy, very moisturizing and doesn’t make my skin crack when I wash my hands a million times a day. They’re vegan and free from silicone, dyes, sulfates and roughly a million other bad things. The newest scent Vanilla Oatmeal wasn’t quite as oatmeal smelling as I expected (I get an almost coconut scent from it) but it smells delicious and works really well. There’s a matching body wash but that’s a post for another day.
Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Matte Lipstick in M401
Make Up For Ever has a ton of new lipsticks out in their Artist Rouge line both in matte and satin finishes. I love this bright, classic red in the matte formula. MUFE teamed up with Icona Pop for this shade and it’s definitely a new classic. The formula itself is great. It’s extremely smooth and pigmented and stays where you put it, so you don’t have to worry about lipstick travelling places it shouldn’t. Although the lipstick is matte, it never fully dries down, so it won’t suck the life out of your lips. There are quite a few other shades I want to try but I’m really loving this one for fall and winter.
I’ve been using Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes eyeliners for years and I love them. But the new version; Aqua XL Waterproof Eyeliner is even better. MUFE teamed up with Charli XCX for this collection and there are a ton of gorgeous shades (and some classic) to choose from.
These pencils are creamy, easy to use and last forever. Even on waterlines. The pencils are so pigmented that you really only need one swipe of a pencil to get amazing colour. We tried out five shades: M-10 (matte black), D-62 (diamond brown), I-90 (iridescent pop purple), M-16 (matte white) and I-32 (iridescent lagoon green). There isn’t a nude shade available for waterlines or the inside corners of your eyes but the white works great if you blend it in.
All of the swatches are one swipe of the pencil. I didn’t go over them at all, that’s how creamy and pigmented they are and they go on just as easily on your eyes. Make Up For Ever also sent me a small bottle of the Sens’Eyes Waterproof Sensitive Eye Cleanser to take these pencils off and man does it do a great job. You just need a tiny bit to get off all your eye makeup and it doesn’t sting at all. I also found it didn’t leave my skin dry or greasy, just clean. If you’re having trouble with eyeliner melting off your face this summer, consider this your solution.
Another month is gone, and even with one extra day February still seemed extra short this year. Regardless, I still found the time to discover a few hot new products that I am in love with!
Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer – I have almost said good bye to foundation these last few weeks thanks to this new concealer. This concealer is made specifically for erasing those dark circles under the eyes. It’s perfect for that, but it also works at concealing any other annoying spots on your face with perfect precision. I find it incredibly hard to find a concealer that I love and can depend on. This one is simple and effective in all the right ways.
Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara – I have tried a lot of bad mascaras lately. I thought about writing a post about all of the bad ones, but instead I’m going to celebrate the one great one! This new mascara has been my new favourite. Imagine long, thick, curled lashes every single day. It’s max colour and volume that is perfect for day or night!
Pond’s Wet Cleansing Towelettes – Who needs regular face wash when you have these towels on hand? These Pond’s wipes are everything you want in a regular face wash, without having to worry about water and rinsing. They give a great clean that leaves my face feeling refreshed. They are also surprisingly moisturizing. I shouldn’t be too surprised though… it’s Pond’s after all. I love their baby powder soft scent too for a before bed clean.
Dove Quench Absolute Hair Care – This line doesn’t technically hit shelves until next month, but I need to tell you now so that you can rush to stores in March!!! I have tried Dove hair products before, but they didn’t leave a lasting memory. This new line though shocked me. In the shower, this Dove shampoo and conditioner didn’t seem like anything special, it was only after it dried that I was impressed. Time after time, this Dove hair line left my hair soft and moisturized. My curls were bouncy, and that never happens! Frizz was a distant memory. I see a future of soft beautiful hair, hopefully not just for me, but you too!
Vichy Normaderm 3 In 1 Cleanser + Scrub + Mask – I already loved the Normaderm line. It’s my favourite of all of Vichy’s skin care products. Imagine my glee when Vichy added to the collection with a product that isn’t just a cleanser. It isn’t just a scrub. It isn’t just a mask either. It’s gentle enough to be able to be used regularly. You can also leave it on your face as a pore cleansing mask. When budgets are tight, this is the kind of smart products that one needs!
I’m going to start off by saying that I love Make Up For Ever and some of my favourite products ever theirs. This foundation is not one of those products. Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation is a medium coverage foundation developed for the TV and film industries. It’s also supposed to be more invisible, comfortable and natural looking than previous formulations.
I tried R210 (Pink Alabaster) and it’s a tiny bit too light for me, which is extremely unusual. Usually everything is too dark and this one will be perfect in the dead of winter when I’m at my most pale. I generally don’t use a ton of foundation, my biggest issue with my skin is a big of redness so for the most part I use tinted moisturizers but I do love a foundation when I need one and I’ve tried a couple recently that I love.
I’m not sure if my skin just doesn’t fit with the Ultra HD Foundation but I find it way too dry and heavy for my skin. I only use a drop or two to cover my face and it really ends up feeling like a mask. It’s just not comfortable on me at all. Plus on me, it’s full coverage.
If I had more skin issues I needed to hide, I would love the coverage of this foundation but it’s just a little too much for me on it’s own. If I mix it with a drop of moisturizer, I get a much more comfortable texture and coverage.
If you need or like a lot of coverage, you’ll probably love this foundation. It also works really well with MUFE’s Step 1 Primers. I just need something a little lighter for my skin.
I’m not a huge lip gloss person because I find most of them too sticky and kind of uncomfortable when they wear off but I’ve loved every Make Up For Ever lip product I’ve tried so I was more than willing to give their new Artist Plexi-Gloss a try. Plexi-Gloss has a really different applicator than most glosses, it’s split and takes a little getting used to but I ended up loving it. I didn’t find the formula too sticky, although it did have a little stickiness to it but it ended up feeling really comfortable and lasted a good hour one me before I noticed any fading. 205P Pearly Rose (Sheer)
205P isn’t quite as bright as it looks in the tube and it also isn’t completely sheer but it’s a great mid tone rose that’ll probably look great on any skin tone. 501 Purple (Opaque)
501 is not a shade I would ever choose on my own but it actually looked pretty good on me. It’s so opaque that it’s more like a lipstick and the pigmentation is incredible. I liked it so much I’m going to try to work up the nerve to wear it out more often. Both the shades I tried had gorgeous colour and shine and were extremely comfortable to wear and with 35 shades to pick from, I have a feeling my biggest issue won’t be whether or not to wear Plexi-Gloss but how to pick from all the pretty colours.
I’ve always been a fan of Make Up For Ever’s primers but their new Step 1 Skin Equalizers have totally changed the game. There are two types of primers in the line, Texture and Tone, each with five options. I have a ton of redness in my fair skin so I chose the Redness Correcting Primer (Texture) and Radiant Primer Blue (Tone)
The tube has the tiniest hole so you don’t use too much product at once and you really don’t need much. I apply the Redness Correcting first and let it sit for a minute then I add a drop of the Radiant Primer Blue. I really mean a drop, any more than that and I look almost ghost like but the minimal amount gives my face a glow.
Both of these primers have colour but dry invisible and they work so well that I don’t have to wear any makeup over them. The Redness Correcting literally gets rid of all my red completely and lasts all day. They smell amazing as well.
These have quickly become my go to primers, especially on days when I don’t want to wear any makeup over them. There are so many more I want to try, the Mattifying, Smoothing and Hydrating are all on my wishlist.
We’ve had a chance to try out a ton of new mascaras lately. So many in fact that we had so much trouble narrowing down our favourites that we had to split them into drugstore and luxe categories.
Guerlain Cils D’Enfer So Volume Mascara
This mascara is super volumizing without being clumpy. My lashes are a pretty decent length on their own but need help in the volume department and this definitely delivers. It doesn’t hurt that it smells amazing. And unlike typical round mascara tubes, this one is a perfect rectangular pocket size that fits into places better. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara
If you’re scared of eyelash curler or know someone who is, Roller Lash is the next best thing. It literally curls every lash and gives great length at the same time. If you’re looking for more volume though, you probably want to use a coat of this and then add your favourite volumizing mascara on top. Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch Lengthening and Defining Mascara
Smoky Stretch really gives you some serious length but doesn’t clump at all. It’s quickly become my favourite daytime mascara and I love that my eyelashes look super long and defined but subtle at the same time. Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils
I can’t say enough about this mascara. You want volume? You’ve got it. This mascara is supposed to make your lashes look like you’re wearing falsies and it really does. This is literally everything I want in a mascara. This YSL classic mascara has been reformulated for it’s 15th anniversary and comes in six shades. It might be on the pricier side of mascaras but considering how well it works, I’d say it’s worth the money. Too Faced Better Than False Lashes Extreme!
If you want to really go all out with your lashes but can’t get a handle on fake lash strips, you need to try this set. First you use the gold tubed primer. Then you follow up with two coats of the white lash extension fibres and finish off with another coat of primer. You end up with seriously major lashes. Calling it extreme isn’t an understatement. And for a night out when I want up up my lash game and don’t want to deal with fake eyelashes, this is what I reach for.
March is a weird month for me makeup wise. It’s still cold but technically spring so I always want to pull out my spring shades a little early. These are the products I couldn’t live without this month. Smashbox Photo Finish Water Primer
Smashbox is known for their amazing Photo Finish primers and the newest addition is just as amazing but so different. This water based primer is so refreshing to spritz on but does an amazing job of getting your skin ready for makeup. I like to let it sit a few minutes before I apply anything over it and I can’t wait to use it in the summer when the less stuff on my skin the better. Make Up For Ever Mist And Fix Setting Spray
This is the first setting spray I’ve ever used that I’ve actually liked. I can literally feel it setting into my skin but once it’s dry I don’t notice it at all. Except hours later my makeup is the way I put it on. Cargo Limited Edition Gel Lipstick in Soho
I love everything about this lipstick. From the packaging to the shade (a perfect neutral pink) to how it feels. This is one of the lightest lipsticks I’ve ever used. You get full coverage but it feels like butter. Royal Apothic Scrubby in Marshmallow
I love a good lip scrub and this one gets the job done without being too harsh. Even though it’s called Marshmallow, the scent isn’t too sweet but just smells amazing. And it’s not drying on my lips. Quo Face Palette in Contessa
Part of the Quo Cosmetics spring line, Contessa is the perfect face kit for someone who’s a little more fair like I am. There’s a blush, a highlighter and a bronzer and they’re pretty generous sizes. The shades are perfect for me whether I want a little colour or want to do some contouring.
With Fifty Shades Of Grey hitting theatres this week, I’m way more excited about the makeup collection Make Up For Ever did for it than I am the actual movie. The limited edition collection features a makeup kit, a cheek kit and two Tease Me Lip Trios in Passionate (Berry) and Innocent (Nude). Since I’m always trying to conquer the perfect berry red lip, I was really happy to try out the Passionate set.
The set comes with an Aqua Lip Pencil in Matte Raspberry, an Aqua Rouge Lipstick in Limited Edition Shade 50 and a Lab Shine Diamond Lipgloss in Shimmering Grenadine. It also includes a little how to booklet. I don’t know how, but I’ve never tried a lip product from MUFE before, but this kit really lived up to my expectations. All three products play well with each other and different combinations give you really different results.
The lip pencil is a little darker than I’d normally use but mixed with the gloss it’s really pretty. The gloss isn’t sticky at all, smells amazing and I love that it has a lip brush applicator that’s really flexible. The star of the set for me though is the lipstick. The shade is a great red lip but it’s the actual lipstick itself that’s going to have me trying other shades. It’s a long wear (or as they call it, waterproof) liquid lipstick that has the colour on one side and a clear topcoat on the other. It’s definitely sticky and drying until you add the clear part but once you do, it’s really comfortable. This lipstick lasts forever! I went through three different removers until I found one that could get it off.
If you’ve never tried lip products from Make Up For Ever before, these kits are a great way to try it out. And now I’m off on my hunt to decide which shade of lipstick I need to try next.
Make Up For Ever recently introduced three new black eyeliners to their collection; Artist Liner (pencil), Ink Liner (ink/liquid) and Graphic Liner (pen). I was instantly drawn to the Graphic Liner because I love a good pen liner and can’t use liquid liner to save my life. The fact that they call it a carbon black vinyl like liner got me even more interested.
The Graphic Liner looks like a typical pen liner. It has a foam tip and it goes on pretty smoothly. When it dries it actually looks like vinyl, so if you’re looking for the typical flat black finish you definitely get a surprise.
This liner dries extremely fast and doesn’t move, even without a primer. The only thing I don’t love about it is that there’s no snap when you close it, so I’m always worried it’s open and will dry out. If you’re looking for a new black liner that’s just a little different though, this one might be it.
