I was excited for the idea of a bronzing primer. It would allow me to skip out on multiple face products for just one that gives me a bronzed glow that also moisturizers. Unfortunately this isn’t my dream come true. The Lune + Aster primer is too thick and leaves a weird residue on my face after application that I just couldn’t ignore. The bronzing is also very dark, so be warned if you want to try it. You may not want to apply all over your face. It is better applied in small areas. My hunt for the perfect all in one product continues.
Spring really does a number on my face. The dryness from winter isn’t gone yet and my allergies from all the growing things make my skin way more sensitive. That sensitivity causes more redness, which in turn results in me wearing more makeup than normal. It’s a vicious cycle but I’ve found some new products that are quickly becoming essentials in my spring face routine.
Hylamide Booster Series Sensitive Fix
I’ve tried so many things for redness that have done absolutely nothing for me. Imagine my surprise when I started using this Sensitive Fix Serum and saw results almost immediately. If I’m being good and actually using this twice a day, the redness in my skin reduces by a significant amount. It’s extremely lightweight and absorbs immediately without any stickiness. And if I’m feeling lazy, I mix some into my moisturizer. There also isn’t a heavy scent which is great for those who have really sensitive skin.
StriVectin Multi-Action Restorative Cream
I’ve been pretty obsessed with StriVectin lately. There hasn’t been a single product I’ve tried that hasn’t done what it said it was going to. Granted, I don’t have a ton of skin issues and I’m not trying to get rid of wrinkles but I’m definitely working on preventative measures. The Multi-Action Restorative Cream is supposed to address fine lines, wrinkles, density, firmness, sagging, texture, dehydration, dullness, discoloration, clarity, resilience and enlarged pores. This cream looks really thick but it’s not and it sinks in fast. I’ve noticed a difference in the dehyration, dullness and enlarged pore camps, but I was looking for those. In general I’ve just noticed my skin looks better.
Clinique Chubby In The Nude Foundation Stick
In the spring, I’m still looking for a creamy, hydrating foundation and Chubby In The Nude is definitely that. It also allows me to only cover the areas I need to. This is sheer to medium coverage so it’s extremely natural looking but if you’re looking for full coverage, you’ll want to skip this one. It blends into my skin tone really well and is really great for travel when you don’t want to deal with gloopy foundation.
Kat Von D Lock-It Color Correcting Eyeshadow Primer
I don’t think I have color issues on my eyelids but I do love the fact that this is the only Kat Von D foundation product that isn’t too dark on me. The fair shade is perfect for my skin tone and the crayon format makes it really easy to prime my eyes for shadow. Lock-It is kind of an understatement, once you apply shadow, it’s not moving. So if you want to blend, use my trick. Only apply this below your crease so you can blend above it.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil
I love when products end up being multi-purpose. I was hesitant to try a primer oil because I wasn’t sure it would stick. I was partially right. I find when I use this with a super hydrating foundation, it feels like makeup is sliding off my face. But when I use it with something more dry, it’s perfect. I’ve also been using it on it’s own for a little glow and I mix it with a drop of concealer or foundation for a tinted moisturizer. It’s not greasy at all and is really, really hyrating. It might not be exactly what you’d expect from a Smashbox primer but I actually love how different it is.
Up until this month I’ve been a devoted foundation wearer. I wore foundation without fail almost every day when I discovered the Paul & Joe Beaute primer. I didn’t ever have faith that a primer and powder would be enough.
The Paul & Joe Perfect Makeup Primer has all of the qualities that you want in your primer and foundation in one little package. It’s as thick as your average foundation and gives good coverage. It looks like it might lay on top of your skin at first, but then it quickly blends in to look very natural. It covers all redness, moisturizes and gives your face a matte finish. As an added bonus it leaves your skin with a powdery smell and feel so you are silky smooth.
After I applied the Paul & Joe Primer, my instinct was to add foundation over top, but when I looked in the mirror I was pleasantly surprised by the results. I felt confident in my face. All I needed was to add a little Paul & Joe pressed powder over top for the perfect finishing touch.
Paul & Joe really changed the whole way that I wear makeup. Since then I’ve been lightening up how much I wear foundation, trying not only this primer, but other primers and light tinted moisturizers in the place of my heavy foundation. Paul & Joe’s primer was one of my game changers. I would recommend it to anyone out there.
Fall is the time for updating and modifying your skin care routine. Whether you try all of these new products or just think one or two are important, I have gathered products that will make transitioning to the cold months a little bit easier on your skin.
Pond’s Rejuveness Anti-Wrinkle Cream
Keep your face super moisturized this season with this new classic cream. The Pond’s cream looks heavy, but it’s really light on your face. I love the cool feel and the powdery smell. Instead of leaving skin oily, it’s moist and dewy. It’s no wonder Pond’s is one of the most beloved products available.
Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes
I have been a huge fan of Burt’s Bees for years, but I had no idea that they offered face cleansing towelettes. I was really excited to see them. I used the Cucumber and Sage towels that are meant to soothe your skin as well. As I expected from Burt’s Bees the wipes work great. My face feels clean without being dry and my skin looks great. I can’t wait to try a few more scents.
B. Kamins Corrective Primer
Just because it isn’t as hot anymore doesn’t mean that my skin doesn’t still get shiny. This Corrective Primer from B. Kamins has been my secret weapon against skin for the last few weeks. This clear gel primer goes on easily for an instant mattifying effect. The shine on my face is toned down right away. I’m left with the perfect finish for applying my makeup.
Sephora Collection Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer
Sephora has modernized the concealer with their new gel serum. I find a lot of concealers heavy and thick. This gel concealer is light and airy on your skin. It sits on top of the skin as opposed to getting stuck. It brightens the area and covers up dark spots under the eyes (or anywhere else on your face). I can’t believe there isn’t more concealers like this. Luckily I found this one!
Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment
If you aren’t sure exactly what type of eye treatment you need, this Smart eye treatment is your new best friend. This treatment is an all-in-one for all eye issues that targets whatever you need. I always thought I needed to brighten my eyes, but it was the contouring that really impressed me. It goes to show that sometimes you need to trust your products!
March is a weird month for me makeup wise. It’s still cold but technically spring so I always want to pull out my spring shades a little early. These are the products I couldn’t live without this month.
Smashbox Photo Finish Water Primer
Smashbox is known for their amazing Photo Finish primers and the newest addition is just as amazing but so different. This water based primer is so refreshing to spritz on but does an amazing job of getting your skin ready for makeup. I like to let it sit a few minutes before I apply anything over it and I can’t wait to use it in the summer when the less stuff on my skin the better.
Make Up For Ever Mist And Fix Setting Spray
This is the first setting spray I’ve ever used that I’ve actually liked. I can literally feel it setting into my skin but once it’s dry I don’t notice it at all. Except hours later my makeup is the way I put it on.
Cargo Limited Edition Gel Lipstick in Soho
I love everything about this lipstick. From the packaging to the shade (a perfect neutral pink) to how it feels. This is one of the lightest lipsticks I’ve ever used. You get full coverage but it feels like butter.
Royal Apothic Scrubby in Marshmallow
I love a good lip scrub and this one gets the job done without being too harsh. Even though it’s called Marshmallow, the scent isn’t too sweet but just smells amazing. And it’s not drying on my lips.
Quo Face Palette in Contessa
Part of the Quo Cosmetics spring line, Contessa is the perfect face kit for someone who’s a little more fair like I am. There’s a blush, a highlighter and a bronzer and they’re pretty generous sizes. The shades are perfect for me whether I want a little colour or want to do some contouring.
I have started the New Year with some new skin clearing products that can hopefully clear up all of that holiday stress induced bad skin.
The B Kamins Blemish Gel was my first stop. It has that strong chemical scent that you expect from a strong blemish fighting gel. I applied it to my blemishes for a few days and started to clear up my skin quickly. Acne creams tend to dry out my skin, but this one wasn’t so bad.
I followed this up by adding the Corrective Primer and Corrective Mattifier to my morning routine. I always wonder if it will help my skin layering on so many products. Both of these gels come out of the pump pretty thick, but once you have them on, you won’t worry about it anymore. Both the primer and mattifier combine to make my skin look amazing. Say goodbye to shine and say goodbye to pores. You don’t need to struggle with acne to appreciate having matte pore-free skin!
Check out what makeup we were coveting in my Most Wanted list this month:
Lise Watier Base Miracle – This is hands down one of the best primers that I have ever used. Watch as your face gets shine-free and matte before your eyes. Feel how silky smooth your skin is after applying. If you have been searching for a perfect primer, Lise Watier should be on your list.
The Body Shop Red Musk – I have a long history with The Body Shop’s musk perfumes. I’ve been wearing them since high school. I didn’t think that they could ever beat the original fragrance, but Red Musk has finally done it. I adore this rich musk. It’s perfect for fall. I want to wrap up in it like a warm blanket.
Philosophy Micro Exfoliating Treatment – This is, honestly, the best at home exfoliator that I’ve ever used. This is a two-step process that first involves a micro-crystal exfoliator. These crystals have a lemony smell and scrub your face even with the lightest touch. Next, you apply the activating gel that turns it into a bit of a foam. Your face will feel slightly warm and continues to exfoliate with a bit of scrubbing. If you have sensitive skin, you can still use this treatment, you just avoid all of the scrubbing. When you wash it off your face is going to feel amazing! A few days later I was still surprised by how soft my face felt.
Clinique Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick – I’m over glossy lips. I love the look of sexy matte lips that lasts all day. Now Clinique has a whole line of matte lipsticks that last for hours in adorable colours. They are really soft and creamy, but give you that dry matte look. The Matte Petal pink shade is my favourite, but the Matte Suede is great for a hot nude.
Lancome Hypnose Dazzling Eyeshadow – These limited edition holiday eyeshadows are stunning for the season. They come in sparkling shades of black, gold or red depending on your tastes. I don’t usually like cream eyeshadows, and this feels like the perfect mix of cream meets powder. They are easy to apply soft enough to be day appropriate or you can layer it on for sparkle drama!
No one likes pores! Every woman wishes they had beautiful poreless skin. Here are three products that offer very different ways to get poreless skin in a few minutes.
Gosh Prime’n Set Primer & Mattifying Setting Powder
The name might be a mouthful, but using this powder is easy. After you apply all of your makeup the final step should be to dust a fine layer of this white powder on your face to minimize the look of pores. It also claims to control shine, give you a matte finish, control moisture, hold makeup in place and reduce redness. I’m not sure if it’s really reducing the look of my pores, but after I apply it my face does look great.
The Body Shop All-In-One Instablur Perfector
This light primer is a great base to give you a flawless complexion. The Body Shop’s primer doesn’t just reduce your pores. It makes your face feel velvety soft first. It then reduces the size of pores along with shine and blemishes. It’s really light on your face too, so you won’t feel like you are wearing too much makeup.
Shu Uemura Poreraser Mousse
If you really want to get rid of all pores, this mousse is the exact thing you need. When you apply this mousse as the first step to your makeup for oily skin, your pores completely disappear. Apply a light foundation to get the perfect look. The only problem with this mousse is pretty sticky. You need to wait a while to let it set and dry before applying anything else. If you have extra time, it’s worth the wait.
Smashbox Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Foundation Primer
I already loved the Photo Finish primers from Smashbox, but this Pore Minimizing one wins hands down. Not only does it prep your skin for makeup like the other do, but as you apply it, you can actually see your pores disappearing and the effect lasts all day. As an added bonus, its oil-free so you don’t have to worry about getting greasy while you’re wearing it.
Dermalogica is one of our favourite skin care brands but we had a few questions, so we had a skin care chat with Dermalogica’s Education Manager, Holly Sherrard.
Can you remember your first experience with skin care?
I was six or eight years old and my aunt let me use her products on my skin and hers. I cleansed her skin, applied toner and then finished with a makeup application then repeated all these steps on my skin. I still remember how our skin was glowing after the application and my mom has a picture of this. Products have changed drastically from 30 years ago and we now have more advanced formulations with botanicals and peptides to benefit our skin. I have always loved teaching and skin care so working with Dermalogica is the perfect marriage for my passions.
What sets Dermalogica apart from other skin care companies?
Dermalogica sets an education standard of excellence for all skin care professionals. We have always focused on education first not only for the skin therapist but also consumers. We are the number one professional skin care company worldwide and are leaders with ingredients and techniques to bring professional success to skin therapists around the globe.
What is the best way for someone to determine which skin care products are right for them?
The best way to determine which products are right for the skin is to seek advice from a skin care professional. Face Mapping® skin analysis by Dermalogica is a great way to analyze the skin and get targeted results. Products are not meant to be one-size-fits-all, customization is key for healthy skin.
With so many sunscreen options and sunscreen added to makeup, does layering actually do anything and are we putting enough sunscreen on our faces?
The Canadian Cancer Society recommends to apply a teaspoon of product to the face for adequate protection however most people use much less. By layering SPF, a person increases their protection factor. Start out with a moisturizer and sunscreen, follow with a primer with SPF and finish with a foundation that also includes an SPF.
How is the new Redness Relief primer different from other primers?
Redness Relief Primer SPF20 is a calming and soothing treatment product to neutralize, relieve and defend against inflammation and irritation induced by skin sensitivity. Natural botanical extracts provide a sheer green tint to counter redness and physical sunscreens protect from UV. Dermalogica’s exclusive UltraCalming™ complex of oat extracts, ginger and bisabolol treat skin sensitivity. It’s all combined together in a silicone-based product which gives a velvety feel and provides a perfect canvas for makeup application.
Are there certain ingredients we should look for in skin care?
Are they any we should completely avoid? Peptides come in all shapes and sizes and can treat various skin conditions from inflammation and acne to aging and pigmentation. Botanicals may be an ingredient choice for people who are looking to go the more natural route. A combination of both science and nature leads to excellent products. The key to finding great ingredients is to use skin care products from a company that backs their claims by unbiased, scientific research. The number one ingredient to avoid is artificial fragrance – it can lead to skin sensitivity and contact dermatitis.
What do you consider skin care essentials?
I have two small children and very little time to get ready in the morning so multipurpose products are the staple in my kit. Cleanser, toner, moisturizer with SPF then primer with SPF. I only use foundation for special occasions so Redness Relief Primer SPF20 is my go-to for a flawless complexion with little makeup.
Is there a product you’re completely obsessed with right now?
Redness Relief Primer SPF20. I couldn’t live without Skin Perfect Primer SPF30 when we launched it a few years ago however I fell in love with Redness Relief Primer SPF20 last May when I experienced it at our Global Education Conference. The velvety finish keeps my skin feeling soft, the sheer green tint diffuses the redness in my skin and the botanicals treat the sensitivity I experience from my allergies. It is amazing to see the difference in the texture and the even tone of my skin with only one application.
One of my biggest pet peeves about makeup is how long it lasts. You spend an hour getting every inch of your face looking perfect, leave the house and then when you hit the bathroom, your eye shadow seems to have magically disappeared or been absorbed into your skin. Now you can get the new Smashbox 24 Hour Shadow Primer to stop all that.
The new Smashbox Primer promises to keep your eye shadow smudge prof, crease proof and fade proof for a full day. It’s even sweat resistant, so it will totally work in the club or at a wedding where you can put your makeup to the test.
The new Smashbox 24 Hour Shadow Primer hits stores in April and we can’t wait to try it.
In the meantime check out our review of the amazing Smashbox Full Exposure Palette.
