Rimmel is one of my favourite drug store brands, but this BB Cream is a miss for them. I’m surprised because they have made some great foundations lately. The biggest issue with this makeup is that it’s too watery. I don’t mind light products necessarily, but this one feels thin. It applies to my face really thin, not giving any proper coverage. I suppose it might last a long time, but I end up applying layers of concealer and powder over it to get the look I want, so I don’t know.
I can’t believe this year is flying by and it’s already June (but it feels like July in Toronto). Here’s what I used the most in May.
Clarins Multi-Active Day and Night creams
I’ll be honest and say I don’t always follow the moisturizer day and night cream rules. I find them interchangeable for the most part and just go by what my skin feels like it needs. But the Clarins Multi-Active Jour (day) is just light enough for daytime while keeping my skin feeling really hydrated while the Multi-Active Nuit (night) is a little heavier for night but not as heavy as a lot of night creams are. Using both of them has really helped keep my combination skin moisturized while not letting it get greasy. These smell so amazing but if you have issues with scent, keep away.
Live Clean Multi Boost Shampoo and Conditioner
Spring is a weird time for my hair. It’s not as dried out, the humidity makes my frizz pop and my roots get a little oily. Live Clean’s Multi Boost line kept it looking healthy and it stayed pretty manageable. I would recommend this to someone whose hair falls into the normal category. It’s not quite enough for really dry hair and those with oily scalps might have some greasiness. I love that I can add vitamins to my hair though and that it’s sulfate and paraben free.
Clinique Pop Glaze Sheer Lip Colour + Primer in Sprinkle Pop
I’ve been wearing most matte liquid lipsticks lately but on days when I don’t want to bother but still want a pop of colour on my lips, I reach for Sprinkle Pop. It’s a really pretty, medium bright pink that goes on super sheer but still leaves some colour. It’s not a traditional lipstick, more like a tinted lip balm that you apply like a lipstick. Even after the colour wears off, it leaves a slight hint of colour but tons of moisture. I can leave my lip balm at home when I put this one on. My lips are moisturized for hours.
Rimmel Clear Complexion Clarifying Powder
With spring and summer come humidity and my skin ends up on the oilier end of the spectrum and I get seriously shiny. Rimmel’s Clear Complexion Clarifying Powder is one of the few powders I’ve tried that actually leaves me looking matte for a long period of time without getting cakey. I wish it came with some kind of applicator so I could throw it in my purse but even when I put it on before I leave the house I know I won’t look shiny for most of the day. It’s also supposed to minimize breakouts thanks to it’s Pureskin complex.
Maybelline Colour Tattoo Concentrated Crayon in Bronze Truffle
I love the original Colour Tattoo shadows but I hate applying them for my fingers. From the first time I tried the Concentrated Crayon, I was hooked. You get the same colour payoff and staying power as the pots but it’s so much less messy and you can throw it in your purse for touch ups. Bronze Truffle is a great shade that takes me from day to night. I use a little in the morning and layer on more at night for more intensity. I have a couple shades of the crayons and this one is by far my favourite.
Whether you’re going out with a significant other or hanging out with the girls, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to mean super complicated makeup. So we’ve come up with some great products that’ll make your life a little easier.
Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in The Vintage Vamp
Charlotte Tilbury makes her eyeshadow quads really easy for us. All the shades are colour co-ordinated, there’s a little diagram to show us where to use what shade and they pretty much work for any skin tone. I’m in love with The Vintage Vamp. I use the top two shades for every day and the bottom two for added drama. This pink, gold and plum palette goes on so smoothly that I barely need to blend. Plus it’s really pigmented so you can get away with one pass of a brush. The bonus is these shadows last for hours, so I’ve never had to use a shadow primer with them.
Yves Rocher Top Coat For Eye Makeup Fixing
Just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean you can’t glam up your makeup. These gels transform any old eye makeup into something with more wow factor. It’s easy to use! First you apply your makeup as usual. Second, choose your finish whether it’s glossy, metallic or pearly. Apply the gel using the applicator brush on your lids over your makeup. When I used it with powder shadow, I found that it wiped off my eye shadow. It worked best for me with liner or something that was stronger. The finishes are fun and perfect for any celebration look.
Rimmel The Only 1 Lipstick in One Of A Kind
This winter I have been all about dark lipsticks this winter. I love them so much. My biggest decision has been red or purple lipstick. Rimmel’s new shade and formula is the perfect mix of both. This lipstick is a rich berry that will satisfy your need to go to the dark side, in a day appropriate way. The lipstick even smells like berries. If you see me around, expect to see the shade!
Clarins 3 Dot Liner
This liner is supposed to make applying the perfect eyeliner easier, but for someone who isn’t confident applying liner it’s terrifying. The three dot pen tip looks like I will just make more mistakes rather than less. Instead it’s easy to get a slick black line. My own line is a bit thicker than I would normally apply it, but it looks great, so I’m not going to complain. Anyone who is trying find their perfect black eye liner should give this innovative pen a try. If you are more skilled than I am, you might be able to create some amazing looks.
FLOWER Miracle Matte Translucent Finishing Powder
I get a little shiny, so I love a finishing powder and FLOWER’s new Miracle Matte powder is fantastic. It’s really silky and easily blends into your skin. It gives you a great matte finish while covering up any imperfections and really does a good job minimizing my pores. It’s the perfect way to finish up the makeup process and it’s a really easy way to make your skin look amazing without a ton of product.
January always seems like a good time to be a little more low key with makeup, but there are definitely some staples that I don’t take a break from. These are my Most Wanted this month.
Kérastase Chronologiste Crème de Régénération
The dryness of winter basically demands the use of hair masks and I haven’t found a company that does them better than Kérastase. The Chronologiste Crème de Régénération is probably my favourite out of all of them. Not only does it make my hair smoother but it soothes my scalp and leaves my hair really soft and healthy instead of dried out.
Rimmel Fix & Protect Makeup Primer
Rimmel’s newest primer, Fix & Protect, is a great way to give your skin a little boost in the winter without drying it out. This slightly runny, white primer does a great job of evening out your skin and minimizing pores while putting up a block that’s anti-pollution and stress. Plus I’ve noticed my skin looks better since I’ve been using it.
Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment
Stephanie and I both love Fresh’s Sugar Lip line but somehow I hadn’t tried the Advanced Therapy until recently. This clear balm has the same lemon sugar scent as the others in the line but if feels a little more substantial. It has a really nice slip to it but it lasts a long time on your lips. I’ve been using it before bed and I wake up with super soft, smooth lips in the morning.
Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Drama Mascara
Maybelline has always been my favourite drugstore brand mascara and I always expect great things. Push Up Drama definitely delivers. From the first time I used it, the push up cup brush gave me amazing length and volume and it lasts all day. I don’t have to use an eyelash curler with this one and honestly, it gives me so much length and curl on it’s own, I’m kind of scared to.
Dermalogica Sheer Tint
I don’t wear a lot of foundation and prefer BB creams or tinted moisturizers. Dermalogica’s Sheer Tint in Light is everything I want in a tinted moisturizer. It gives me light coverage, keeps my skin hydrated and actually makes my skin better while I’m using it. It has a slight medicinal scent but it doesn’t bother me. It’s a great way to even out my skin tone without wearing a ton of makeup.
For the past year it’s been all about matte lips, but times are changing and things are looking glossy again. Rimmel has released 15 new shades of super shiny, high intensity lip gloss ready for fall. I tried two shades to see just how glossy they are!
I used the pink ‘Captivate Me’ and the golden nude ‘Non Stop Glamour’. I wore both of the alone and over top of my favourite lipsticks. I have to say Rimmel is winning me back over to the glossy side.
The Non Stop Glamour is so great even I want to kiss myself! My lips are irresistible! I just can’t stop looking at them. It’s the perfect shade to wear over any lipstick to give it added glam.
I do wish these lip glosses lasted a bit longer, but they are easy to bring along and reapply on the road.
I see gloss in your future!
We got the chance to put two of Rimmel’s new mascaras head to head to see which one we would recommend. We tried the Kate Idol Eyes Mascara and the Wonder’Lash Mascara with Argan Oil (waterproof).
The Kate Idol Eyes Mascara is part of the Kate Moss makeup collection. Who doesn’t want that Kate Moss look? Kate Moss had those cool bedroom eyes that are equal parts sexy and runway.
The brush is curvy in all of the right places. It allows you to turn the brush and flip your hand around so it’s comfortable no matter how you like to apply it. I appreciate that because so many other brushes try to tell you how to apply. This brush lets you choose. There are small bristles at the end and big fast ones in the middle.
The mascara is all va-va-voom. This mascara gives you crazy thick, crazy long and intensely black lashes. These are lashes that you can’t ignore. I found that it took a long time for this mascara to dry. Once I was done, wow! My lashes looked amazing. There was just one problem… this mascara isn’t waterproof at all. I found any little wetness on my lashes caused this mascara to run and run. My eyes are pretty sensitive and water often. The first day I wore this mascara by the time I got to work I had black lines all down my cheeks. Even on a good day, I had those Kate Moss bedroom eyes with the black mascara smudged under my eyes. Maybe that is what Rimmel was going for, but I seriously doubt it.
After that I moved onto the waterproof Wonder’Lash Mascara that comes packed with argan oil. I got this mascara because of the brush. Alyssa wanted to try this mascara, but the Ultra Flex brush was too much for her. The bristles are a great length and even, but the brush is very flexible. It’s clearly too much for some people. It didn’t really bother me too much, but I did notice it. I noticed that I was using the brush differently than other mascaras.
The Wonder’Lash gives you really long lashes without the clumps. My lashes look long, but they didn’t have that plump fake lash look like I got with the Kate Moss mascara. There was absolutely no clumping though. My lashes have never been so sleek and separate. I did find that this mascara was hard to apply on my bottom lashes because of the flexible brush.
Unlike the other mascara, this one isn’t going to run down your cheeks. This mascara is definitely waterproof. It’s been taking me all of the cleaners in my arsenal to wipe off my mascara at the end of the night.
So it’s trust worthy mascara versus ultimate drama. I don’t know how you will choose. I’m glad that I have both of these mascaras because there is definitely a time for both of them.
At one point or another we’ve all used those long wearing lipsticks with colour on one end and a clear balm on the other. But they used to be way too drying. Luckily makeup has changed and Rimmel’s Provocalips are just one of the new developments that gives us long wearing, transferproof lipstick that actually lasts and doesn’t leave our lips completely dried out. With ten shades to pick from Provocalips has you covered from subtle to dramatic.
My favourite shades are Make Your Move and Play With Fire, but I liked all four shades we were sent. You put the colour on first, let it dry for a minute and then add the top coat. And you’ll definitely need to reapply the clear top coat to keep your lips hydrated. And that is where my problem came in.
These lipsticks leak. A lot. I left them lying on my counter among other makeup on their sides and when I went back for them everything surrounding them was covered. My counter, other makeup, my hands when I tried to pick them up. Since they’re waterproof, cleanup was not easy. So while I really like these lipsticks, I’m not willing to throw them in my purse to take with me since I now keep them upright at all times. Which means I can’t reapply the top coat when I’m out, so wearing them out really isn’t an option for me.
I’d love to find a way to fix the leaking issue because I would get a ton of wear out of these if I could take them with me.
Yves Saint Laurent Wildly Gold Complete Makeup Palette (Limited Edition)
Yves Saint Laurent finally made their first makeup palette this year and it was definitely worth the wait. The leopard print palette is so sexy in a way only YSL can do. The shadow colours are dramatic, but neutral enough that everyone can wear them. The blush is a perfectly pretty pink. The lipsticks are daring and sexy. Everything about this is hot, hot, hot!
Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation
This is hands down my favourite product of the year. I am addicted to this foundation. Some might say it’s too thick and heavy, but I think it’s just right. This rich, creamy foundation gives complete coverage leaving me with the perfect complexion. I don’t have to worry about redness or blemishes. It leaves me feeling so confident! Thanks Rimmel!

Urban Decay Pulp Fiction Collection
This is the coolest makeup collection of the year without a doubt. Inspired by Quentin Tarentino’s cult classic everything about this collection screams cool. The palette is the coolest to look at with it’s movie quotes in the box. It’s got a diagram on how to get Uma Thurman’s Mia Wallace look from the movie. My personal favourite is the red lipstick though. It lasts a long time and gives you a red that won’t quit.

Clinique Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick
This was the year of matte lipstick for me. I didn’t realize that I was obsessed with matte lips until 2014. I love the way they look. I love how they feel. I love that I can start with matte and add a lip gloss if I want. Of all of the matte lipsticks that I collected this year, Clinique’s Soft Matte Lipstick collection was the one to beat. The bright pretty pinks were my favourite, but all of the colours are winners.

When I felt in love with bb creams, I was a convert, but Rimmel’s new Stay Matte Foundation has made me remember what a really amazing foundation can do.
Rimmel has created a foundation that stops every problem I worry about when I put on makeup in the morning. I don’t have terrible skin, but I am far from flawless. Rimmel’s foundation makes me feel flawless.

Before you start, you should note. This foundation is thick and it doesn’t spread and blend well. If you have very dry skin, you might want to avoid it altogether. It is going to reveal every crack and crease with how dry it is on your face. I would recommend a good moisturizer base, which you should be doing anyways.
As I applied this foundation, I saw all of my flaws slowly disappear. The redness in my cheeks was gone. Annoying blemishes on my chin and forehead were hidden. That weird scar from when I was a kid completely vanished. Best of all, it gave me this lovely matte finish. I didn’t need to apply conceals and powder like I do with other bb creams and foundations. I found that I did need a bit of blush or bronzer to give me some colour, but otherwise, I was photoshoot ready!
I was amazed. I truly never thought I would find a foundation that did everything I wanted in one. I didn’t think this was possible. Excuse me while I wipe away a tear of joy!
I don’t wear foundation very often but when I do I need a primer under it so my skin doesn’t dry out and flake. Luckily there are so many amazing ones to choose from and it seems like they all do different things. These are my most wanted primers.
Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish
This one might seem obvious. It’s a cult favourite and probably the most well known primer out there but there’s a reason for that. It works. It goes on smoothly and helps keep your makeup in place. It’s the first primer I’d ever used and I still keep some around at all times.
Clinique Superprimer Colour Corrects Dullness
This one is pretty new to me and I don’t know how I lived without it. It feels amazing going on and your skin feels soft all day. It looks pink out of the tube but doesn’t really leave a colour on your skin. Instead it brightens up your complexion and leaves you glowing, even under makeup. This is my absolute favourite on the list.
Rimmel Stay Matte
I use this one alone on days that I’m a little shiny. It does exactly what the name says, it stays matte all day. It’s not heavy and you’ll forget you have anything on your face but the shine is gone.
Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer
I use this one two different ways. The first is under foundation as a primer that adds a little glow. The second is as a spot highlighter. It does both really well. Use it sparingly though, it highlights a lot.
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
This is the best primer I’ve tried for eyeshadow. Once you put your shadow on over it, it’s there until you take it off. And in a few cases that’s been the next day. There really isn’t enough I can say about this primer. If you have problems with eyeshadow fading or creasing give it a try.
There are so many more primers I haven’t tried yet and more that I have but these are my most wanted picks.
