Tarte Hair Goals Dry Shampoo

Until this arrived I didn’t know that Tarte made hair products, but I was excited to be introduced to their hair care with a dry shampoo. I feel like you can really learn something about the line through a dry shampoo. You can’t hide anything. It’s when I need help the most!

Tarte’s Dry Shampoo has a great smell. It’s a bit perfumed, but not in an obnoxious way, just subtle enough. Like most other dry shampoos, the aerosol sprays out a bit aggressively, and you need to really tousle your hair and mix it up good. I found that if I left it for too long, it was hard to brush through and left a little residue in my hair.

It DID really help to boost the volume and dry up any oil in my roots. I would avoid the ends of my hair moving forward. It dried those out a little too much.

From writing this I am thinking that maybe less is more with the Tarte Dry Shampoo. Once you have learned the tricks to it, you are ready!

Tarte TarteGuard Tinted Moisturizer

It’s been a long time that I have loved a product as much as I love this new Tarte Tinted Moisturizer. Unlike a lot of products, it literally does everything that I want it to and it arrived on beauty shelves just in time for summer.

Once you start using Tarteguard Tinted Moisturizer, you will be protecting your skin on so many levels. First as a moisturizer, it keeps your skin moisturized without getting oily. It absorbs quickly leaving your skin glowing, but not moist. It has very little scent, which is nice for those of us who hate perfumed moisturizers.  It’s also packed full of great ingredients like vitamin A, vitamin E and apple extract, all protecting your face from the day.

As a tinted face product, this has just the right amount of coverage. I am a solid foundation lover. I usually avoid tinted moisturizer because it leaves me wanting more. This one has the perfect amount of sheer coverage. Pair it with a dab of concealer on those problem areas and you are ready to go. It gives a nice even look that lasts all day. The light-medium tone was good for winter, but as I have been getting more sun lately, I am going to move up to the medium. I am surprised there isn’t a darker option for people with darker skin, who still want a Tarte Tined Moisturizer. I think that’s a huge miss from Tarte, that should be addressed.

Finally, since it’s a part of the TarteGuard collection, this also has SPF 20 Sunscreen included. You might think that’s nothing, but as far as tinted moisturizers from makeup companies go, this one is pretty good. I took this on vacation to Miami with me this spring and didn’t get a burn on my face at all. Usually my face is the first place to show colour.

Overall, since the first time I used this Tarte moisturizer I have been hooked. Now I just have to make it last all summer.

Battle of the Natural Deodorants

I’ve been having some serious skin issues the past few years and it’s sent me on a search for aluminum-free deodorants that actually work. I don’t necessarily need to switch over to a natural deodorant but I figure it can’t hurt. I definitely have some criteria if I’m going to be spending more money though (natural deodorant is notoriously more expensive than traditional ones). It has to smell good, or at least keep me from smelling bad, it needs to last at least a couple hours and it needs to not cause more skin issues for me. I put three natural deodorants to the test and here’s how it all worked out.
Lafe’s Bliss Iris & Rose

Scent: 2/5 Iris & Rose
Texture: 4/5 Smooth and easy to apply stick
Longevity: 2/5 4 hours max
What it doesn’t have: Aluminum, Propylene Glycol, GMO’s
Total score: 8/15
Where to buy: Lafe’s website

I didn’t get to choose the Lafe’s scent that I used and to be honest, it’s probably throwing off my opinion. While I love most rose products, this one just smells like old lady to me and while the scent lasts a really long time, the actual deodorant doesn’t hold up nearly as well. The texture and stick are nice enough that I would definitely try another scent and see if I like it better.

Tarte Clean Queen Vegan Deodorant

Scent: 5/5 Sweet Vanilla
Texture: 4/5 Cream to Powder roll-on stick
Longevity: 3.5/5 roughly 6 hours
What it doesn’t have: Aluminum, Parabens, Mineral Oil, Sulfates, Gluten, Phthalates and it’s vegan
Total score: 12.5/15
Where to buy: Tarte.com, Sephora

I’ve loved Tarte makeup for years but I haven’t tried a ton of their skin care. When I heard they were bringing out a natural deodorant, I had to try it. It smells incredible but I wish the scent lasted a little longer. Some days I can still smell it after a couple hours and some days it disappears on me almost immediately. The star of this deodorant is the formula. It takes a second to dry down but once it does, it keeps me dry and stink free for hours. I still need to reapply on sweatier days but it’s definitely cute enough to keep in my purse.

Schmidt’s Rose & Vanilla Deodorant Pot

Scent: 4/5 Rose & Vanilla
Texture: 3/5 Cream to powder pot (spatula included)
Longevity: 3.5/5 depends on if you have a reaction to the baking soda
What it doesn’t have: Aluminum, Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Phthalates. It’s also vegan, gluten free and cruelty free
Total Score:10.5/15
Where to buy: Schmidt’s Naturals

I’ve never used a pot deodorant before and while I did have a couple of the Schmidt stick versions, this one interested me more. The rose scent in this one is much more to my liking but I did have a couple issues with it. This is the only deodorant of the three that’s baking soda based and my skin does not react well to it. While some people get rashes, I find that after a few hours, the scent turned on me and really became gross. To the point that I had to wash it off and put something else on. That said, it was much easier to apply than I expected and only ran into issues if I wanted to reapply and didn’t have a counter handy but I would definitely use this if they made it in their sensitive skin formula which doesn’t have baking soda in it. This could’ve been the winner for me, but my skin didn’t agree.

The verdict:

I had issues with the scents of both the Lafe’s and Schmidt’s deodorants for different reasons but the formulas themselves were decent. I just need to look into other options from both those companies. Tarte was the clear winner for me but at $18 CAD, it’s a little pricey. I’ll see how long one stick lasts and then decide if I’ll use it on a regular basis but I’m really liking it right now, so I think that it’s pretty likely I will.

It’s nice that we have so many more options for natural deodorant and if there’s another one you think we should try, let us know.

Makeup Most Wanted February 2017: Alyssa’s Picks

I might usually say I can’t believe how fast a month went by but for some reason I feel like I completely missed February. Maybe it’s because Toronto’s weather was so unseasonably spring-like but it’s almost like it went from January to March in one day. Luckily I did actually use a bunch of new stuff during February and some completely blew me away.

Shiseido IBUKI Smart Filtering Smoother

Everyone is all about selfie filters (except me, I *might* have a total of 3 selfies on my phone) and this lightweight lotion is supposed to give you the appearance of a filter on your face. I don’t know how Shiseido came up with this but I’m going to need it in my life forever now. In the week or so I’ve been using it, my pores look smaller, my skin is matte and I have a little glow. While it’s mattifying, it doesn’t dry out my skin. I’ve used this on it’s own and as a primer under makeup and I absolutely know I’ll get another once I run out. It’s pocket size, so it’s great to keep in your purse or to travel with but I wish there was a larger sized option as well. I might start keeping these everywhere just in case.

Tarte Lifted Sweatproof Mascara

I might not work out as much as I should but I go to a lot of sweaty concerts and I’ve been looking for a mascara for years that won’t melt off but won’t be horrible to take off when I get home either. Tarte finally gave me what I was looking for. This sweatproof mascara only comes in brown-black and while I love my mascara blacker than black, I actually really like the shade of this. It’s a dark enough brown that it can pass for black without the harshness. It does a great job giving me a lot of volume and it doesn’t clump while I’m layering it on. I do find it can get a tad flaky but not enough to really bother me. Plus it’s actually sweatproof but comes off easily with makeup remover. I’m used to still seeing waterproof mascara the next day, after I’ve tried to scrub it off for half an hour, so this is a nice change.

Redken No Blow Dry NBD Airy Cream

I basically never heat style my hair so I’m a huge fan of the new air dry trend, mainly because I’ve been doing it that way for years. Redken’s newest release is three air dry stylers. Airy Cream for fine hair, Just Right Cream for medium hair and Bossy Cream for coarse hair. I’ve been using Airy Cream and I flat out love it. I wash my hair at night, add this cream, throw my hair in a braid or a bun and wake up to nearly perfect hair. It does a great job of getting rid of my frizz without weighing my hair down and you can’t feel it once it dries. Did I mention it smells amazing too?

Beautycounter Desert Sunrise Palette

Beautycounter is a fairly new brand for me and I love that they’re making great products while taking out things that are bad for you. Their spring collection is called Desert Sunrise and it was love at first sight for me and this palette. With six eyeshadows (two are brand new) and three blushes, I’ve done quite a few looks with this palette already. I don’t get any fall out with the shadows, but I wish they were a touch more pigmented, especially the lighter shades. But they’re fairly buildable and I’ve worn all the shades and can’t pick a favourite. The blushes on the other hand are amazing. I automatically gravitated towards Bloom (the middle shade) and I love the pink shade on my skin. It just screams spring to me. The blushes seem to be a lot more pigmented than the shadows and you really only need a tiny but. I’m definitely going to be using this palette a lot more and I can’t wait to try more from Beautycounter.

Holiday Most Wanted: Makeup Gifts

To say I love holiday makeup is an understatement. If I could only buy makeup once a year, it would be holiday stuff and these gifts are perfect for any makeup junkie.

Lipstick Queen Smokey Lip Kit
lipstick-queen-smokey-lip-kit
There are actually two of these kits, one comes with Black Lace Rabbit and Pinky Nude Sinner and the other with Black Lace Rabbit and Bright Natural Sinner. I like both options but for this post went with Pinky Nude. You can use both these lipsticks on their own or layer the Black Lace Rabbit over Pinky Nude for a deeper, smokey look. If you’ve never tried Black Lace Rabbit before, this is a great way to try the sheer, transforming black lipstick that’ll at least double you lipstick options.
Tarte Color Vibes Amazonian Clay Palette
tarte-color-vibes-palette
This palette has been out for months, so it’s getting a little difficult to find, but keep looking because it’s worth it. With twenty eyeshadows in Tarte’s amazing Amazonian Clay formula, there’s a shade for every look you want. I personally love the shades on the Monet, Seascape and Mosaic but there isn’t a single shade I wouldn’t use.
Arbonne Midnight Muse Holiday 2016
arbonne-midnight-muse-holiday-2016
It’s pretty rare for a holiday kit to give you a complete makeup look but Arbonne’s Midnight Muse does a pretty good job of it. The kit includes an eyeshadow duo, a pencil liner and a matte cream & sheer lip gloss duo. All you really need to add is mascara and some blush (or at least I do) and you’re good for any holiday party.
Kat Von D Hello Canada! Set
kat-von-d-hello-canada
This really isn’t a holiday kit, but it’s a fantastic way to introduce someone to Kat Von’s makeup. Available only at Sephora in Canada, this kit includes some of my favourite Kat Von D products. It has deluxe mini versions of Studded Kiss Lipstick in Lolita, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Double Dare and Tattoo Liner in Trooper (everyone needs to try this one) and it’s all wrapped up in a vegan leather bag. Did I mention it’s only $30?
Too Faced Grande Hotel Cafe
too-faced-christmas-in-new-york-grande-hotel-cafe
I look forward to Too Faced holiday releases every year and while they do seem somewhat similar, there’s always something special about them. This year my favourite was the Grande Hotel Cafe. You open up the cafe to reveal three palettes, a deluxe sample of Better Than Sex mascara and a leaflet with three makeup look instructions. Each of the palettes is scented differently (Eggnog Latte, Gingerbread Coffee and Peppermint Mocha). You can also carry around each palette separately or use them together. I can’t wait to see what they come out with next year.

Holiday Most Wanted: Stocking Stuffers

I’m not sure where December went, but with Christmas and Chanukah both this weekend; we’ll be posting a bunch of gift guides this week. Our first one is all about stocking stuffers, or if you celebrate Chanukah, one of the little mid-holiday gifts.

Fresh Zodiac Oval Soap
fresh-aries-oval-soap-mangosteen
I love the idea of these soaps. There are twelve scents to go with each zodiac sign. I’m both an Aries and a Taurus and I love the Mangosteen scented Aries soap. I actually found that I liked my signs the best, so maybe there’s something to this. This is a great personalized gift for anyone.
Burt’s Bees Kissable Lip Color Trio in Warm
burts-bees-kissable-color-trio-warm
This little trio is great for anyone who wants moisturized lips with a hint of colour. It comes in warm and cool varieties and I love the warm version. It includes the classic Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmers in Rhubarb, Peony and my favourite, Fig.
Arbonne Tahitian Coconut Lip Therapy Set

If you know someone whose lips have taken a rough turn during the winter, this delicious coconut scented lip duo will definitely help them out. With a lip smoother and matching salve, you can give them super soft lips with one little gift.
Invisibobble Time To Shine Collection
invisibobble-time-to-shine-edition-bronze-me-pretty
Ever since I started using these weird little hair elastics (they look like old telephone cords), I’ve been hooked. No more ponytail bend in your hair and I love using them with wet hair because they don’t feel damaging when I pull them out. The Time To Shine collection are really pretty metallic shades, and they’re tiny enough to fit in a stocking.
Tarte Limitless Lippies
tarte-limitless-lippies
If you know someone who loves the matte lip trend, you get eight of Tarte’s mini Tarteist Matte Lip Paints. You can either split these up or give all of them as a gift. There’s everything from nudes to reds, so everyone can find a shade they love!

Tarte Tarteist Metallic Shadows

tarte-tarteist-metallic-shadow-box
One of my favourite things about being a beauty blogger is trying new products that are destined to be instant classics and aren’t an eyeshadow palette. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good palette, but there’s something to be said for eyeshadow singles and the ability to put whatever shades you want together. Until now, I’ve only used Tarte shadows in a palette and most of them have been matte, which is my shadow preference. I’m really not a sparkly, glittery kind of girl so I tend to gravitate toward matte anything. But Tarte has just majorly stepped up their shadow game with Tarteist Metallic Shadows.
tarte-tarteist-metallic-shadow
With eleven shades that are all fairly neutral (so far), there’s a shadow that can fit into any look whether it’s day or night, dramatic or subtle. The packaging is pretty flimsy but you can pop the shadows out and put them in a magnetic palette. The star of these shadows is the formula. These are buttery and pigmented and shimmery but not glittery. They’re smooth and blendable and work really well together. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of fallout but you’re definitely going to want to use a primer with these. The colours are pretty spectacular. I personally love Poker Face (silvery lilac) and Dame (dusty rose) but I really liked all five I tried. There are a couple others I have my eye on (Sinful, Speakeasy) and I’ll probably end up grabbing them.
tarte-tarteist-metallic-shadow-swatches
I love Tarte but it’s been a really long time since I was blown away with a new launch by them. This whole Tarteist line has been great but these shadows are the winners for me.

Tarte Tarteist Matte Lip Paint

Tarte Tarteist Matte Lip Paint Box
I’m cheating a little with the next installment of our matte liquid lipstick series. Tarte’s Lip Paint comes in two versions, matte (black cap) and glossy (gold cap) but for this series we’re just using the matte.
Tarte Tarteist Matte Lip Paint
I tried four shades, L-R: So Fetch (pink-coral), Selfish (bright pink), Fomo (mauve) and Frenemy (burgundy). I’ve been alternating So Fetch and Selfish all summer. While So Fetch is a coral-pink, it tends to lean red on me and Selfish is a really nice bright, dark pink. I bought Fomo when it was a Sephora VIB Rouge exclusive (the other three are press samples) and I find it more of a fall/winter shade but I really love it. Frenemy is a little too dark for me and I found it a little patchy but I might be able to pull it off in the winter.

So Fetch, Selfish, Fomo, Frenemy

The brush is pretty typical looking for a matte liquid lipstick but I actually found it more flexible and easier to maneuver. The formula itself it a lot more mousse like than all the others and that creaminess means it doesn’t dry down that quickly. Or ever really. An hour after I apply it, I still find it the same texture as when I applied it. That also means that there’s no way it’s transfer-proof. It gets on everything.

You’ll notice that every time you have a drink or eat something, it looks like a ton of lipstick is coming off. And it does for a while but eventually all the excess is gone and you’re left with a comfortable matte lip that suddenly stops coming off. Once the lipstick stops, well, shedding, the staying power is pretty great. After a few hours I start to notice a little flaking on the inside of my lips and just touch up that part. This might not be the best if you’re looking for kiss-proof lipstick but the Tarteist Lip Paints are the best at not drying your lips out. And you can always add a gloss over top since they have those as well.

tarte Holidaze Collection

Tarte Holidaze 2015
I don’t celebrate Christmas but my favourite time of year is the holiday season because of all the great gifts that get released. tarte’s Holidaze collection is one of my favourites this year and the value for their gifts are pretty insane for the price you pay. We received two pieces of the Holidaze collection and I have to say I’m pretty obsessed with both of them.
Bling It On Amazonian Clay Blush Palette
Tarte Bling It On
The packaging alone for Bling It On is gorgeous. Who wouldn’t want a black sequined palette? But the blushes inside are what make this palette special. It’s so rare to find a blush palette that I get excited when I find one.
Tarte Bling It On Open
With four limited edition blushes; Fetching (rose), Prim (plum nude), Smashing (coral pink), Beaming (shimmery apricot pink) and a permanent shade Dollface (cool pink) there is literally a shade for every skin tone. These are just as creamy and blendable as any Tarte blush and these last all day. Perfect for any blush fan.
Home For The Holidaze
Tarte Home For The Holidaze Open
Home For The Holidaze isn’t your typical palette. You get four palettes that each contain four Amazonian Clay eyeshadows and an Amazonian Clay Blush. You also get a full size LipSurgence Lip Creme in Ravishing (rose) and a deluxe Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara. But the best part is that you get a portable collector’s compact.
Tarte Home For The Holidaze Open Palette
This compact allows you to take any of the four palettes with you wherever you want to go.
Tarte Home For The Holidaze Shades
The shades of the palettes are all pretty neutral but give you lots of look options; whether you want a light daytime look or something more dramatic for night. Home For The Holidaze has a $396 value but it’s selling for $49. That’s really impressive for what you get.

From the packaging to the unique ideas inside, tarte’s Holidaze is one of my favourite holiday collections this year and people seem to be agreeing because it’s selling out everywhere.

Tarte Spring ’15 Most Wanted

Tarte Spring 2015
We’re huge fans of Tarte so it wasn’t a huge surprise that we completely fell in love with their spring releases and we had to do a Most Wanted on it because these shades are just so perfect for spring.
Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette
Tarte Tartelette Palette Open
Tartelette is a brand new eyeshadow palette that has twelve brand new matte neutral shades. Every single shadow is extremely pigmented and really smooth and blendable. Even without a primer these shadows last a lot longer than you’d expect. I love that Tarte included instructions for two looks using the palette.
Tarte Cheeks Lips 2015
LipSurgence Lip Tint in Glitzy
I’d never used a LipSurgence Lip Tint before and after using Glitzy I’m completely hooked. This deep pink shade is so flattering and it’s probably the most moisturizing lip crayon I’ve ever used and I love that even after it wears off you still have a tint of colour.
Tartelette Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Celebrated
Tarte’s blushes are known for their pigmentation and lasting power and Celebration is no exception. This blush was released as part of Tarte’s 15th anniversary and the light pink nude was a little lighter than I expected but built up really well.
Tarte Cheek Lip Swatches 2015
Tartelette Amazonian Butter Lipstick
This mid-toned pink lipstick is another anniversary release but this one is limited edition. I really can’t imagine a better spring lipstick than Ethereal Pink. It’s soft, creamy and lasts forever. The fact that it’s both super pigmented and really comfortable at the same time had me sold the first time I wore it.
